This is a bit different from many art books. The artist James Wyeth asked dancer Rudolf Nureyev if he would pose for a portrait. Whereas Nureyev initially declined, later he accepted the invitation and Jamie Wyeth developed over 30 preliminary mixed media drawings of the dancer before completing the final oil painting of the artist. The book includes these 30 drawings, the final oil, and a series of mixed media drawings that appear to be derived from photographs of the dance on stage. I found the work to be highly compelling for Nureyev was a strikingly handsome man with extremely strong facial features that Wyeth never played down or softened. Possibly the most subdued work in the book is the final oil painting, with all the subtle tones and textures of a Thomas Eakins painting. However, it is the wildest and most dramatic drawings that seemed to capture the personality of Nureyev. With wild hair and dramatic black eye-liner, some images capture the androgynous aspect of Nureyev. Most of the preliminary drawings are black and white chalk or conti-crayon on yellow ochre or burnt sienna pastel paper. However, often gouache is also used to dramatic effects on the works. I recommend the book to fans of Nureyev but also for young artists who may need examples of the pains and plans that a professional artist must undertake to derive the final selection of composition for a finished portrait. Wyeth is both controlled and then at times draws with wild abandon and his drawings are highly compelling.

Any fan of Wyeth, Nureyev, or ballet in general should have this for their library. Revealing in a way a photograph just is not. I was touched by the drawings and the stories behind them.

Incredibly beautiful! A favorite artist doing another favorite artist.

Anyone who loves Nureyev and Wyath's work will love this book.

beautifully done

This isn't just a book, it's a resource. Read the book through and then come back to it over and over for new ideas. It is so full of ideas and action items you can't possibly do it all at once or in order. And work will be required. You won't get better reading this book. You will become aware of the gap, and you will receive ideas and tools to close the gap. Each chapter is full of assessments, myths debunked, and fresh ideas and new ways to look at old problems. If you want to get serious about retention, this book is a must!

A quick read with some interesting tools, this book can help you rework conversations with employees (and yourself) to better think about professional development.

I deliver leader coach training internally for leadership in our organization and include a section on "career development coaching" in some of the programs. All I can say about "Help Them Grow" is WOW! This 112 page book is a jewel filled with practical tips that when applied will help leaders/managers provide excellent development conversations and coaching. AND, the authors emphasize that career development is not a yearly (dreaded) event or one-time discussion but rather ongoing conversations that can be done effectively and efficiently (translation: great career coaching does not take as much time as leaders often think). One of the many "jewels" included are examples of the questions to ask employees that help them start taking responsibility for their development and questions that help keep them on track. Also, in most companies, corporations, and organizations today there may be fewer promotions available, and the authors encourage a paradigm shift from "onward and upward" to "forward and toward." In other words, lots of opportunities for development exist in all organizations especially when all of us see success as more than just a promotion. If I could give this book more than 5 Stars I would!Ed Nottingham, PhDConsulting & Clinical PsychologistAuthor, It's Not As Bad As It Seems

Beverly Kaye, known internationally as the High Priestess of Corporate Retention, has given us another book that managers and supervisors will be able to refer to year after year. Open at virtually any page and you will find immediate help in dealing with any employee's career development. What she and her co-author say about the importance of having meaningful conversations is unique to this book. If only people would get off their smartphones and talk to one another, the world would be a better place.

Your best people have options. It's usually not the money that will keep them, it's the chance to do interesting work and opportunities for growth and development. In the 2nd edition of their classic, Kaye and Giulioni provide a clear and actionable roadmap for leaders who get that getting results depends on growing the capacity of their teams.

Help them Grow or Watch Them Go: Career Conversations Employees Want is an engaging and insightful work, introducing a practical and powerful new paradigm for career development in the 21st century. The book addresses the new realities of the 21st century workplace, delivering a highly accessible toolkit. The authors argue that the traditional annual career development conversation is passé and should be replaced by multiple, shorter and more relevant conversations within the context of the day-to-day workflow. Building on the ideas introduced by Doug Connant and Mette Norgaard in Touchpoints, Help them Grow guides managers into this new system in several ways: first, by recognizing the opportunities for dialog when they occur during the normal course of business; and second through a set of tools and techniques to structure conversations that foster worker growth. The key is to frame these conversations correctly. Help them Grow offers a simple yet compelling formula: insight lies at the intersection of hindsight and foresight. Kaye and Giulioni teach managers to notice critical opportunities for worker self-awareness through reinterpretation of past events and experience. True insight comes by overlaying an enlightened understanding of the past with the anticipation of the dreams and possibilities of tomorrow.Help them Grow dispels outdated myths of 20th century career development, replacing them with strategies more relevant to the modern workforce--jettisoning a one-dimensional traditional career ladder and substituting a climbing wall, a powerful and nuanced metaphor that expands rather than limits the spectrum of possible conversations. The book is filled with mind-enriching gems and is a quick and easy read. Anyone who invests a mere two hours with this book will be rewarded by a new framework for career development, leading to greater worker productivity, satisfaction, growth and retention. This is a compelling ROI.

This book should be required reading for all first-time supervisors, seasoned managers and organizational leaders. I found this book through an interview with Mate that a therapist friend posted on her Facebook page. I picked it up because I've had two close family members deal with cancer in the last year (one of whom lived a healthy lifestyle and died within 10 months of her diagnosis). I have known for a while that there was a connection between emotional trauma and stress stemming from childhood and physical illness but Mate's book was a real eye-opener for me. Mate's eloquent and sometimes poetic writing integrates personal stories and anecdotes that ring true and his insights have given me a lot of food for thought, not only about my family members but also about myself. Mate's book is more about explaining the ways in which emotional trauma and stress can affect the body physically when it comes to common Western diseases (such as MS and cancer) and is less of a how-to book. The last chapter of the book does give some important areas to work on psychologically (for example, autonomy and assertion) but beyond this, the book is more about outlining the problem than offering solutions. This is definitely a book I plan on rereading again and again.

I've read 20-some books on the mindbody connection. This is one of the BEST. Dr. Mate clearly shows how stress and emotions play an enormous role in our well-being.Incredibly, Dr. Mate doesn't seem to understand the concept of TMS set forth by Dr. John Sarno, who is probably the foremost physician of mindbody medicine, yet he INDEPENDENTLY PROVES the same general concept as Sarno! TMS is a diagnosis described by Sarno for symptoms that do not come from a problem of tissue pathology. Mate, on the other hand, goes where most physicians do not in showing how stress and emotions influence serious diseases with tissue pathology. Both Mate and Sarno are correct. If you have chronic symptoms of any kind, read this book and read The Mindbody Prescription by Sarno.

I recommend that the reader of this book - reads the last two chapters first, then completes the other earlier and more anecdotal, patient-story based chapters. Contrary to the author's stated intentions, some of the earlier chapters come across as blaming the sufferer for his/her own predicament and use very old studies, with small sample sizes as the justification for conclusions. For me, this undermined the power of the book. The last two chapters present a much more balanced and open argument...more in keeping with current thinking in the field of mind/body/health. There is much of value in this book... however the order of the unfolding perspectives, at times makes it hard for the reader to accept the implicit contentions. None the less, I found that the content provoked much, and generally useful thought.

I now consider this book, along with Daring Greatly by Brene Brown, as required reading for humans. I was on page 20 when I knew that I'd be re-reading this book again once I finished it!As a healthcare practitioner I've suspected that emotions are at play in some of my clients who are doing 'all the right things' and just don't get the results we expect. I heard Dr. Gabor Mate on a podcast talking about this issue and was thrilled to see a book that includes clinical experience, interviews, and the research studies. It's fascinating to me how much emotional repression we can be unconscious of and this book has inspired me to do some digging into myself. He describes patterns that I recognized in myself for the first time and I want to address them before I end up ill. There's not a lot of advice on how to do this in this book, but it provides the motivation to start figuring that out with a therapist or other modalities.

This book was truly an eye opener for me. Gabor traces the origin of many autoimmune and other diseases to childhood, where the stresses of trying to make sense of childhood, and other stresses such as (even unintentional) neglect, or overt abuse, can result in disease in adulthood. Stress doesn't stop in adulthood. The stress upon stress leads to the body finally saying "NO" in the form of illness. This made perfect sense to me. I disagree with previous reviewers on Amazon who say there are no solutions offered in this book. There are. Chapter 19 is the Seven A's of healing. How is that not a solution?Gabor stresses that there is no blame to go around. Parental styles are unconsciously passed down from generation to generation, so who is there to "blame"? When we bring the unconscious into the conscious, we are empowered to do something to change. It may not be easy, but it can be done.Everyone should read this book. A child's mind sees things a certain way, since they have no frame of reference, but the adult can see things as they are. This doesn't exonerate anyone from wrongdoing in parenting (such as abuse) but it brings a whole new way of looking at it. It empowers the person to take charge and say "no more" to taking on the pain of someone else.Even the person who thinks they had the "perfect childhood" may be shocked to realize they repressed a lot, because that is necessary in childhood in order to survive. One may think this is scary to look at, but as the saying goes the truth will set you free. The book discusses ideas we get from cultural conditioning that lead to our unwellness. We have the right to determine our own destinies, and be our own person.Thank you Gabor Mate for this wonderful book.

Changed the way I think. I didn’t even know I needed this book. Many people I know would benefit from realizing how they handle stressful times or anxiety is harming them. This was recommended to me by a doctor. He read it and it changed his life. He experience some incredibly stressful times in his childhood. He carried it into his adulthood. It changed the way he took care of himself.

Review

"[A] rollicking newspaperman's memoir . . . and a strong case for Second City exceptionalism." (New York Times)"A triumph." (Patrick Ryan Toronto Star)“In this wonderful book, Steinberg weaves a poetic mosaic of his life and the life of Chicago—past, present, real, imagined. Like many of its citizens, he came here from elsewhere, drawn by its brawny allure. He lives in Chicago and Chicago lives in him.”—Roger Ebert (Roger Ebert)“I grew up in Chicago. And reading You Were Never in Chicago reminds me why I still think of Chicago as home even though I haven’t lived in the city for more than twenty years. Steinberg brilliantly explores the historical and contemporary city and how each of us makes (or loses) our way in it. Whether you're a native or you just arrived at O'Hare, read this book: it will make you feel at home in Chicago. Even better, it will you make Chicago yours.” (Dan Savage)“A lot of people have tried to take the measure of Chicago, capture it between the covers of a book. Many more have failed than have been successful, and that’s easy to understand. Chicago is ever elusive. But this writer and this book get it. If you know Neil Steinberg from his Sun-Times column, and God love you for still reading a newspaper, you will not be unfamiliar with the high quality and distinctive style of his writing. But here you will also find people and places and sentiments that will surprise, enlighten, and entertain you. It is, of course, his own take on the city. And it’s a keeper.” (Rick Kogan)"Despite his long residence in the city and its suburbs, Steinberg feels and writes as an outsider, which allows him to see and describe aspects of Chicago from a fresh and enthusiastic perspective....This is a well-done paean to a diverse, vibrant metropolis." (Booklist)"Like Studs Terkel before him, Steinberg mixes memoir, history, and travelogue in You Were Never in Chicago as he takes readers along on an engaging tour of the characters—and character—of his adopted city, past and present." (Kristin Baird Rattini American Way Magazine)"If you love Chicago, you’ve got to read Neil Steinberg’s new book You Were Never In Chicago. It’s not a guide book. You won’t find a listing of restaurants. It’s not the history of our great city. It’s one man’s perception of this complex, compelling and confounding community we call sweet home Chicago. . . . He has the skill and curiosity of a great writer." (Terri Hemmert XRT)"[O]n display in You Were Never in Chicago, a memoir interwoven with local history just published by the University of Chicago Press . . . is [Neil's] curiosity, insight, amusing self-awareness and enormous talent." (Eric Zorn Chicago Tribune)"Steinberg’s greatest gift is his ability to build Chicago in our imaginations as a city that has grown from the efforts of people willing to make it their home, sometimes against unbelievable odds. He weaves wonderful stories of people we now take for granted – Upton Sinclair, Julia Louis Dreyfus, Carl Sandburg, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, Theodore Dreiser, Jelly Roll Morton – all who were not born in Chicago, but for whom Chicago became the backdrop onto which they achieved greatness." (Shyam K. Sriram PopMatters)

Many people associate Al Capone, or Michael Jordan, or the Cubs or da Bears as "typical Chicago." Others think of the snowy, cold winters or our politicians. Of course, there's much more to Chicago than that. As a Chicagoland resident for over 50 years, I love this city and Steinberg's book reminds me of why.The author, a columnist from the Chicago Sun-Times, who moved here from Ohio to go to Northwestern University's journalism school in the late 1970s (in other words, a transplant), has presented a beautifully written collection of stories about Chicago history and Chicago present. What does it mean to be a Chicagoan? Do you have to have been born here? Do you have to live here? As Steinberg shows, both aren't necessary. While those of us who were born here do tend to talk about whether we're North Siders or South Siders and also what parish we were from (I'm a North Sider from St Hyacinth Parish), that's only a part of the Chicago story. As Steinberg clearly shows, you don't have to have been born here to be a Chicagoan.I absolutely loved this book for the stories he tells, especially about old-time Chicago , and for the fact that Steinberg is an exact contemporary of mine. Steinberg is a real throwback kind of guy who appreciates the past and I love that.Even though I live and work in the Chicago suburbs and haven't lived in the city itself in over 40 years, I still think of myself as a Chicagoan. Some co-worker transplants to the city wonder how this could be. I ought to give them this book.

This book appeals, in my estimation, to persons who love to learn more about Chicago history and to persons that like stories with political intrigue and messiness. Steinberg has been a local reporter in the Chicago area all of his adult life and brings many personal stories of his own life and of the lives he's reported on. In this, if one chapter doesn't seem interesting to the reader, no problem, the next will be an entirely different situation. Steinberg portrays himself as a less than likable guy. It's an easy read--good story telling mode as opposed to more heavily-laden-with-history mode.

Living in Chicago I've admired Neil Steinberg's column in the Chicago Sun Times for many years and his daily blog is absolutely unmatched and a must read. His book, You Were Never in Chicago is another example of his skilfull way with words. Neil has a real love/hate relationship with the city, its characters, and its politics You don''t have to live in Chicago to enjoy his prose but I guarantee you'll want to visit it after reading this wonderful bookFred Broitman

Sun Time's columnist's love letter to his adopted city, Neil Steinberg's "You Were Never in Chicago". While telling his story of how he became a Chicagoan he describes interesting views on the city's history and culture. I particularly liked his characterization of those who claim to "be from around here", and a little hinky about his guarded assertion that some of the nepotism and yes, corruption in City and County government can make for efficient and publically beneficial governance. A fun read, informative, and an interesting perspective on "the city that works".

Neil has a wonderful tale to tell about his life and his search for a meaningful career, much of which occurred in Chicago and was influenced by that environment. His take on how we become of the place we live and work in is fair. We become quite subjective when making such judgments, as he suggests. Consequently, I was very comfortable with his assessments of Chicago. I really enjoyed reliving my thirty plus years living and working in the Chicagoland area as I read this book.

I really enjoyed "You Were Never In Chicago". It brought back many memories of growing up and living in Chicago for most of my life. Although, I don't know if I could really be considered a Chicagoan, according to Neil's definition of the term, because I grew up on the South Side and lived for many years in a southwest suburb. Nevertheless, I will always consider myself a Chicagoan and truly love the city. Larry

I love Neils books. I ordered this for someone else as I already have a copy. Guess that tells you how much I enjoyed this book.If you have never been to Chicago you should read it and if you live near or in Chicago you will love it.

For Chicago lovers, this is a treat. Well-written with a life's worth of great, sad, and hilarious stories. Rings true.

Review

Salanié provides a broad overview of the economics of contracts. Concision and clarity make the book an elegant introduction to the subject for newcomers. But it is also a useful reference for experienced students and researchers.―Roger Guesnerie, Collège de FranceSalanié has written an elegant book, concise in its explanations and tightly focused on the most useful models and results of contract theory. His experience in both theory building and theory testing are plain to see in his sure-handed choices, which separate the chaff from the wheat in this huge and growing body of theory. I recommend this book highly to students and newcomers to the economic theory of contracts.―Paul Milgrom, Professor of Economics, Stanford UniversityThe first edition of Salanié's book provided an insightful introduction to the modern economics of incentives and contracts. This second edition keeps up with recent advances while maintaining the emphasis on key ideas and intuitions. A great read.―Patrick Rey, IDEI, University of Toulouse

...so if that's what you want, then this book is for you. However, if you're using this for your first look at contract theory, you may well be disappointed (as I am). I don't credit Salanie for leaving out the technical details of the models, because he doesn't effectively convey the depth of the models in his largely intuitive treatment. I'm all for intuition and simplicity, but his book leaves me with more questions than answers after reading it.I'm browsing around on Amazon for a better book, so I thought I'd write a quick rating so that other lowly beginners like me don't make the same mistake I made in purchasing this as my only textbook. On the other hand, I suppose if you want a concise overview with the sketch of most of the important contract theory models, then this might be what you're looking for.

Useful

If you only want to have a simple and well-grounded exposition of Contract Theory that is, to my knowledge, the best book. As an introduction is far more straightforward than Macho-Stadler. Now, if you want an expert material to be used for a graduate course, then Bolton & Dewatripont, and Laffont & Martimort are recommended. Salanié is a gifted writer when it comes to concise math with careful exposition of concepts and ideas.

This book is a great introduction, as well as a very handy reference for contracting research. It achieves what it initially focuses on achieving plus has some tools to build intuition, along with references where needed. Although might not be complete, but it certainly doesnt promise a thorough discussion of contracts. This is a must have along with Bolton and Dewatripont.

I loved that book because it explains the theory of contracts in an easy way buy with no lack of formality

It's obvious recruiting is a topic Jeff Hyman is passionate about and in which he has deep experience. Jeff's on a mission for companies to only hire rockstars and he's able to show you just how to do it. Recruit Rockstars is a quick read packed with fantastic counsel on what works now to identify, recruit, and retain top talent - particularly relevant in this very challenging time of low unemployment. Jeff knows how to entice people to want to join your company and how you can increase your certainty of candidates being a good fit on both the culture and skill set fronts. It's a must-read for anyone building a team and will change the way you approach recruiting.

This is the recruitment guide that every startup needs to read. It's especially valuable for people who might not have a background in recruiting but find themselves in a position where they need to hire the best. Recruit Rockstars is a clear and concise guide that won't waste your time and gives you the recruitment background you need. I can't recommend this book enough!

I’d been absorbing Jeff’s articles and podcasts for years and became frustrated that my own sales leaders weren’t delivering on his prescriptions. When it came time to look for a new Chief Revenue Officer, I turned to Jeff and asked him to find us a Rockstar. He did a deep dive into our company’s expectations and culture and attacked the search. I didn’t think it was possible, but Jeff managed to deliver four high-quality leaders for in-person interviews (including the Rockstar we ultimately hired) within thirty days. Today, I’ve gone from frustrated to excited again about delivering on our sales potential, largely due to Jeff’s efforts.

Excellent tips on hiring right. I especially liked the chapters on DNA. It is truly one of the missing links in getting the right people into your organization. The other well described part is the entire reference checking paradigm. Most of us reference check after the fact, if at all. On occasion, for an especially important position, we’ll make the offer contingent on reference checks that are provided by candidate. But, the idea of looking for references, on your own, through the LinkedIn is really good. This is when you can get the real stuff.Good book!

There are not many recruiting books out there, I jumped all over this one when I saw it was coming out. Jeff 100% gets the reality of what is needed in 2018 to attract and retain top talent. The game has changed and if you do not adapt you will be left behind. This book is a step by step tutorial of exactly what you have to do in THIS market to get top talent.

Jeff and I are cut from the same Cloth. The way he moves through the motions is relatable and to the point. In my humble opinion, the missing piece was, you need to be passionate about people to succeed in this industry. He clearly is and you can feel it through his writing but far too many people in our space are motivated by money. I blew through this book in 2 days and am glad I found it. It confirmed 80% of my approach and gave me ideas to grow stronger in this space. Thanks Jeff for laying it out so well!

Bringing on the right people makes or breaks a company’s success - and Jeff has the process figured out. This book is filled with useful tidbits that he’s learned through the years that push you to do the due diligence to identify the talent you need, and help you find high performers. It’s a must-have for new and experienced hiring managers alike!

I can't tell you how deeply grateful I am for 'Recruit Rockstars' - I stumbled upon it on Kindle last night, and am already half-way through. I applied all of the lessons today in an interview, from the prescriptive questions to crafting the DNA, and the interview went immeasurably better than the ones last week! If you haven't yet had the chance to become more intentional about interviewing and if your goal is to hire A-players, this book is a great place to start.
