I bought this bundle as I didn't have any of these books in Kindle format yet and it was cheaper than buying each of the ebooks individually. At the current prices, you basically get Lord John and the Brotherhood of the Blade for free (well, you pay $0.02 for it). ;)I give all the stories five stars, as they're amazing and well-structured. I enjoy Lord John immensely and he really gets to shine in his novellas and shorts. The Brotherhood of the Blade and The Scottish Prisoner are the standouts here, but each story gives us excellent background and insight to this complex character. I cannot praise the stories enough. As there are already thousands of reviews for the stories out there, I'll focus mainly on the formatting issue.I give the formatting of this bundle three stars. As anyone familiar with this series already knows, Lord John and the Hand of Devils includes three short stories. Within The Hand of Devils, they're in chronological order. However, once you add Private Matter and Brotherhood of the Blade, they are not. This bundle would have been the perfect opportunity to put all these shorts and novellas in chronological order for the reader. Unfortunately, they chose not to do that, so those who do want to read the stories in order will have to go back and forth. There is no easy way to do this either. The main TOC lists the main titles only. You have to go to the Hand of Devils to get to that book's TOC to jump to the desired short. Still, I suppose it's better than having to leave one ebook entirely to go to three other ebooks, which is the only thing saving this format from getting 1-star.Chronological order of titles and their location numbers (at least, on my Kindle):LJ & The Hellfire Club (1756) - Location 4963LJ & The Private Matter (June 1757) - Location 80LJ & The Succubus (Autumn 1757) - Location 5579LJ & The Brotherhood of the Blade (Jan 1758) - Location 9747LJ & The Haunted Soldier (Nov 1758) - Location 7328The Scottish Prisoner (1760) - Location 17651
I am a huge Diana Gabaldon fan and am experiencing "Drougtlander" waiting for book 9 and season 4 of the Starz series. I thought the Lord John series would provide a bridge to my wait. It was hard for first half, didn't enjoy all the short stories. Lord John and the Brotherhood of the Blade ws too much same sex lust and romance. I put the book down and decided I had wasted my time and money....but still wanted more of Outlander so picked it back up after couple days and skipped to the Scottish Prisoner. This story was so good, I went back to LJ & the Brotherhood and the Blade and managed to finish it this time. If I was doing it over, I would buy the Scottish Prisoner and skip the rest.My digital set of Outlander gave me 8 separate books in my digital library. I knew in advance that the LJG series was a combination of short stories and full novels (though not DG normal length novels!) but I was still confused with each one I started...I kept waiting for story to abruptly end or wondering if in fact I was reading a novel. I looked each story up before I started the read, once again trying to set expectations.Knowing LJG was a homosexual lover, I hesitated to purchase as I am not interested in reading about same sex romance. That said, I suppose it is my own fault that the books are what I thought. I did not like LJG until the 8th Outlander book and I should have stuck with my earlier impression. While I respect that LJG "talks" to Diana Gabaldon, he does not speak to me. HIs close friendship with Jamie was always a bit strange and I think held together only by LJG being a stepfather to William.Still a big Diana Gabaldon fan., she's a hugely talented and creative writer....just not a Lord John Grey fan.
Fun to read - especially once you've finished the whole Outlander saga and you're missing the characters and Diana Gabaldon's great writing. Lord John is a fascinating and lovable character and I enjoyed spending time with him. The stories are basically mysteries, which isn't my favorite type of story. But immersing yourself in that time and the various places is very fun - Gabaldon is wonderful at historical fiction. And there is just a little bit of sex to spice it up, although the Claire/Jamie love story is not part of these novels. If you like Outlander, you'll have a good time with these short novels and stories. (One thing to note - look at Gabaldon's website to discover the chronological order of the stories - they are not printed in the order they take place, if that's important to you.)
I have been reading Diana Gabaldon's books for over 15 years but somehow never read The Lord John Series. Needless to say, I really grew to love this character, his family, and friends. He has some great adventures and Diana really captures the time period in London and England with her marvelous descriptions of places and events. I now find myself anxiously awaiting another novel about Lord John Grey with the same eager anticipation I have for her Outlander series. Highly recommend!
After reading and totally enjoying The Outlander series I was disappointed in this series. As immersed as I was in the first series, I kept hoping for something that never happened.The author unquestionably is so gifted...but for me she just missed it on these books.I will read more of Diana's books because she writes like most people breathe...effortlessly.These are only my thoughts...I devoured The Outlander series.Respectfully,Deborah Noris
Before I could get to the end of Lord John and the Brotherhood of the Sword, it became tedious. At the end when there was the big conclusion on who killed the father, I had forgotten who and where I had originally read about that person. The book had so many pages, so you thought that you should finish the book before giving up. I did, but it never got any better. Unlike most of her books, that you don't want to end, this one was a pleasure to close the cover.
