Unexplored prior to this book, the Chinese map is named for 17th-century historian John Selden, who, though unable to decipher its characters, donated the map to Oxford out of his passion to ensure the survival of knowledge. Brook continues this tradition of scholarly passion with a methodical analysis, exploring the map's anachronisms, its stunning accuracy for the time, and its emphasis on sea routes. These features are explained through histories of the complex trade relationship between East and West in the 17th century. Ironically, the map was of little practical function; it passed quickly from use and into storage, and was made redundant by improved maps that were created only a few decades later—making its accuracy now purely of historical interest. As Brook notes in his preface, his book is really about not the map itself but “the people whose stories intersected with it.†That cast of characters is vast, including Selden contemporaries Ben Jonson, John Donne, Walter Raleigh, William Shakespeare, and the governor of the East India Company, Thomas Smythe. Fairly interesting subject from somebody who really knows his stuff. For somebody like me who only has a superficial interest in ancient maps, the book was too lengthy.
A very nice book in good condition and fine package. Fast shipment and quick delivery. The book itself is quite interesting and worthy reading.
Maybe a book isn't the best format for this information, but if you're going to do that, use a map with decent resolution, one where the details described are clearly visible.
Just about what I expected in a story with very little other references to verify.
This book takes us on a far ranging historical and territorial journey. Unravelling the mystery of the map is sometimes technical and at other times acquaints us with obscure documents. All in all a very good read.
I admit that I am only halfway through, and as yet I don't know what the book is pointing at, I do agree that the book is fascinating on many levels. Brook excels in his storytelling, weaving together many different lives, professions, the Dutch East Indies Company, the English trying to establish themselves in the East Indies, Japan, and especially China. Wow. It is hard to put down.

This map changes the standard view of ancient China as focused only on itself. With all the work & money that went into drawing this chart, China was sending out ships to its neighbors and farther.
