I was waffling between 2 and 3 stars. It was a 2.5 star book for me.In its defense, it was a clean romance. I tried to like Hannah, I really did. I understand she was hesitant because she felt she made bad decisions, she was concerned for her son, and she had really low self-esteem. Hannah did not come across as a likeable person. It felt less like Hannah was attracted to Adam, and more like she wanted to use him.I normally enjoy small town romances, but I could only come up with two decent people in the town, and one of them was Adam. As unpleasant as Hannah was to Adam, I can't understand why he wanted to be around her. Adam seemed like a really nice, genuine person.A town full of greedy, selfish, unpleasant, hurtful people along with a narcissist of an ex husband is not my idea of a nice place to live. Also, ex husband, Henry made a decision, but the book never mentioned what decision he made.Honestly, you can be hurt by a previous relationship. You can be cautious when moving forward, but is it really necessary to be unpleasant and judgemental? If Hannah's self esteem was that low, she needed a therapist, not another relationship.I truly struggled to get through this book. It didn't make me smile, feel good, or feel happy. It was slow paced. The dialogue was dry. The story dragged on and on. After thinking this story through while writing my review, I have decided to go with 2 stars.I voluntarily read and reviewed this book received from Hidden Gems.
Anyone who can write a book with a beginning, middle, and end is already ahead of the game, so I hate to disparage them in a review. That said, this book was very confusing. The action and dialog skipped around in funny ways, making it hard to follow. Add to that the huge number of typos and extraneous words that I think must have been left behind during edits, and it was a chaotic mess. There were lapses in logic, too, like at the first, Adam arrives at Hannah’s B&B with a woman he called “Gran,†but when he and Gran talk, she tells him she wants him to settle down and give her some grandchildren before she dies. Huh? The fake relationship premise itself was confusing, because in an earlier chapter I thought Adam had already mentioned something similar to what Hannah made a big production of proposing in chapter 6, and he had to sleep on it before he could give her an answer. The whole book kept on like that. Sorry, but I’m not interested in reading any more books in this series.
(Review with spoilers)First book I read by the author. It's a clean romance. I loved it and I recommend it.Hannah has never been accepted in the town. Adam has returned, like the prodigal son, because he wants to live there. When their paths cross, will they separate again?I love Adam. He is a good man who has worked for years to support his family, and who has decided to follow his dreams. A great businessman, and also a naive man, who believes that with money he will be more easily accepted in the town. He is a romantic. It's easy to tell by the way he treats Hannah. He is a businessman who loves manual work, and who wants to be a difference for kids. Despite their breakup, he has great respect for Nadia, his ex.He is attracted to Hannah from the very first moment. I think he accepts her idea, not just to help her, but to be able to spend more time together, to get to know each other, to show her how he feels. He doesn't lie when he tells her how he feels, he's sincere. But she doesn't see it.Hannah is a strong, independent woman who has been struggling for years to give her son the life he deserves. Strong, but also insecure. With her physical appearance, because she thinks that no one can find her attractive. And also with her relationship with the people of the town. Do they reject her, as she believes, or is she the one who has kept herself apart? She likes Adam, but she doesn't think he can like someone like her. And although he tells her more than once that he does, she doesn't believe him, she doesn't take him seriously. She has confidence in herself for everything, to fight for a better future, but not to see herself as she really is?I thought I wouldn't like Henry, but I did. There have been a pair of moments when I haven't, because of what he said, but I like that he wants to change, that he wants to be part of his son's life. It's late, because he has lost many moments with Nathan, but he fights for a second chance he knows he doesn't deserve.I love Geeta. She is able to see people for who they are, not for who they say they are.I received an ARC from the author, and this is my honest review.
I received a free copy of this book from Hidden Gems in exchange for my honest review. *This review may contain what may be considered spoilers. I was a little disappointed in the narrative of this novel. One problem I had with the book is the need for more plot and character development. I found it a little difficult to like Hannah. I found her to be judgemental and, to be completely honest, oblivious to what is going on around her. Her dialogue with others sometimes felt forced and inauthentic. With more character development, maybe I would have understood her a little better. Other residents of Sweet Blooms made it difficult to see why she would want to stay there in the first place. That being said, I loved the character of Adam. He was kind and respectful. The plot is intriguing and has great potential. However, I kept having the feeling that I missed something important. I didn't, it just wasn't there.
