Review

“The acclaimed naturalist delivers a pithy summary of evidence for Darwinian evolution of human behavior.... A magisterial history of social evolution, [and] lucid, concise overview of human evolution that mentions tools and brain power in passing but focuses on the true source of our pre-eminence: the ability to work together.” - Kirkus Reviews [starred review]“Wilson (On Human Nature), a Pulitzer Prize winner and Harvard evolutionary biologist, addresses what he calls the six “great transitions of evolution” that led to human society in this ambitious treatise, his 32nd book.... He does an impressive job in this short text of making the nature of the transitions clear.”” - Publishers Weekly“Arresting.... Deeply informative and provocative.” - Ray Olson, Booklist

Genesis is E.O. Wilson’s explicit effort to ground human culture in a scientific framework. Taking its title from the Bible, Wilson develops a theory of how eusociality has developed in a small number of species ultimately leading to intelligence in modern humanity. Though he seems more concerned to replace traditional religious explanations of human origins, I believe his theories are also an attack on postmodern theories of human culture.Essentially Wilson argues that eusociality, or the phenomenon of altruism among some members of a tribe, evolves because of a change from raising young who establish new colonies to raising young who stay in the same nest. This leads to genetic changes allowing for intra-group roles and some elements of the species to sacrifice personal reproduction for the good of the group. Thus, much of the book is devoted to detailing this phenomenon among insects and then following this with a similar speculation on the precursors of Homo Sapiens. The standard arguments for group selection, that it enables cooperative tribes to out-evolve uncooperative individuals, are discussed as well. Each reader can assess these arguments for themselves. Obviously group selection isn’t universally accepted among biologists and Wilson acknowledges that genetic eusociality among humans is arguable as well. But Wilson should be commended for, along with other writers, pulling evolutionary biology out of the ivory tower and seeing the full ramifications of these theories if they became part of the standard curriculum. The one hesitation about recommending this book is that it is more of an essay than a fully fledged work coming in at 125 pages. In addition, it ends abruptly with a reference to a scientific study. It’s not that having a proper conclusion is necessary, it’s that it’s a sign that the book is somewhat rushed and incomplete. I have to admit that after finishing I had to recollect the arguments dispersed throughout the book to make complete sense of it.All in all, however, it’s marked by Wilson’s typically clear prose and makes for a good read as well as an engaging argument. I personally came away less convinced than Wilson that modern biology has achieved a new Genesis but that’s merely a non-biologist’s opinion. Worthwhile reading for scientists, philosophers and anyone who is interested in the origins of humanity.

This survey requires of the reader a fairly detailed knowledge of the various species genera and families as well as some familiarity with the Eons and eras of the earth's history. The genetic exposition requires expertise and I was left with not knowing whether epigenetic expression was accounted for.

A quite succinct version of Wilson, but didn't deliver philosophically as intended. The science was there, but the ending felt abrupt as he didn't conclusively close his beginning remarks.

The End of Policing, by Alex S. Vitale

Review

“The End of Policing combines the best in academic research with rhetorical urgency to explain why the ordinary array of police reforms will be ineffective in reducing abusive policing. Alex Vitale shows that we must move beyond conceptualizing public safety as interdiction, exclusion, and arrest if we hope to achieve racial and economic justice.” —Ruth Wilson Gilmore, Professor, CUNY Graduate Center, Co-Founder of Critical Resistance, author of Golden Gulag“Deeply researched, but also vibrantly and accessibly written, The End of Policing is essential reading for anyone wishing to understand the dire state of policing today. Alex Vitale shows compellingly that as long as we ask the police to shore up a fundamentally unequal and dysfunctional social order, superficial ‘reforms’ won’t do much to help. And he offers concrete alternatives aimed at restoring communities and getting police out of the business of trying to contain social problems that they cannot—and should not—control.” —Elliott Currie, Professor, University of California, Irvine, author of Crime and Punishment in America“An extremely vital book on policing. Should be assigned at all police academies. If only the Philando Castile jurors had read this.” —Jeffrey Fagan, Director of Columbia Law School's Center for Crime, Community, and Law “Challenging standard accounts of how to reform policing, Alex Vitale argues that true safety demands directing resources away from police and prisons and towards economic development, education, and drug treatment. Urgent, provocative, and timely, The End of Policing will make you question most of what you have been taught to believe about crime and how to solve it.” —James Forman Jr., Professor, Yale Law School and author of Locking Up Our Own: Crime and Punishment in Black America “In a tightly constructed monograph filled with reform suggestions, Vitale decries the evolution of police agencies as tools of the white establishment to suppress dissatisfaction among the have-nots. A clearly argued, sure-to-be-controversial book.” —Kirkus “In a chapter on each issue, Vitale sets out the problem in depth, explores the liberal view of reforms that seek only to remove the worst excesses of police conduct and to restore the legitimacy of using force in the interests of society, and then offers ideas for alternatives.” —The Network for Police Monitoring “Vitale’s amassing of trenchant facts into an enticing intellectual framework makes The End of Policing a must-read for anyone interesting in waging and winning the fight for economic and social justice.” —Michael Hirsch, Indypendent “The End of Policing is that holiday argument book, the relatively brief stack of facts you can hand to a relative who still talks about those nice guys who helped out with the flat tire and doesn’t see why any lives have to matter more than they already do. A thorough rinsing of the American criminal justice system.” —Sasha Frere-Jones, 4 Columns “The End of Policing’s great strength lies in demonstrating that if the shape of American policing is historical, it is also contingent. We could have made different choices regarding how we set about securing the public against the array of threats that confront it, and—refreshingly, at this moment of general despair—Vitale believes we still can.” —Adam Greenfield, Los Angeles Review of Books “Offers a compelling digest of the dynamics of crime and law enforcement, and a polemic against the militarization of everything. Vitale calls for a dismantling of our very notion of the police: a sprawling, untethered bureaucracy permitted to use lethal force and unaccountable to the people.” —E. Tammy Kim, Nation “Unfortunately, neither increased diversity in police forces nor body cameras nor better training make any seeming difference. We need to restructure our society and put resources into communities themselves, an argument Alex Vitale makes very persuasively.” —Rachel Kushner, author of The Flamethrowers “A welcome challenge to reformist thinking and a powerful argument against social and economic injustice, inequality and racism.” —London School of Economics Review of Books “Suggests a radical alternative that, on the one hand, abolishes corrupt and lethal police policies designed to contain the racialised poor and, on the other, develops and sustains safer communities.” —Race & Class“A welcome challenge to reformist thinking and a powerful argument against social and economic injustice, inequality and racism.” —LSE Review of Books “Offers a convincing argument that the traditional roles played by police forces have been largely counter-productive.” —Morning Star “A compelling critique of modern policing.” —Peter Stauber, Counterfire

Great read from an expert on policing. Although there has been a lot of talk about policing reform in recent years, the bigger picture is often lost. That is this book's contribution. It points out that policing is just one of many public strategies for dealing with social ills. Why do we always turn towards the most punitive approach that demonstrates the worst possible results?

"The problem is policing itself." True. Once dismissing all the excuses out there of what is wrong with policing, Professor Vitale analyzes the problem and comes up with deep solutions for a fix. Inside of ten chapters--everything from The School to prison pipeline to the war on drugs--the book captures the essence of why this institution has been a complete failure. Police in the US use their weapons more than police in all other industrial countries in the world and this is a significant finding. Th question is why? The discussions of policing, gender & race are important too. Policing sex work (chapter 6) is excellent. The discussion of Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates tells the story of how even affluent Black people are policed. Finally, the conclusion calls for an end of militarized policing. I agree. EXCELLENT. RECOMMENDED!!

He delineates very clearly how the police have taken over in all areas of our society. He describes the various ways we have tried to mitigate this and how those ways failed. He offers possible better paths to take. Unfortunately I'm 74 and I don't think much will change in my life time.

Based on the cover and introduction, I expected a book on Police and/or Prison Abolition but instead this is more toward progressive reformism. Disappointing. Some of the information is interesting but much of it same old, same old.

Solid book overall. Author makes great points about police officers being wrongly relied upon to be mental health professionals, counselors, mentors, social workers, juvenile psychologists, etc etc along with their responsibilities as law enforcement. The flawed US educational system and mental health care system are two most notable issues that have forced increased interaction with police by vulnerable populations that have been otherwise given up on. Great chapters and some solid reform ideas for the topics of... police in schools, police dealing with emotionally disturbed people, prostitution, homelessness and some parts of the drug chapter.1 star removed because in some cases he overgeneralizes people from different backgrounds specifically minorities, people living in poverty, police, government. In some cases if feels like he addresses minorities and people living in poverty as if they are all of a similar mindset and view themselves as helpless victims of attacks by the government and don't control the individual outcomes of their own lives. Also the solutions to some problems are in my opinion unrealistic, example - Take guns away from the police in the United States. Overall the author has some good ideas and I learned some valuable things.

Much needed critique of police-reform.

I love this book! It takes on another perspective of the problem of policing and over policing, as well as the problem of officers being trained for combat/war type situations rather than how to act when you see a simple situation in the street. Amazing book, I completely recommend

Superb thinking about ways to end police corruption.

“[A] guide to this rich and diverse architectural heritage”—Connecticut Explored“Wigren has channeled passion for our past into a handsome new volume, Connecticut Architecture, which examines “Stories of 100 Places” from around the state. It is not a guidebook or a “best of” but a detailed and lavishly illustrated history of what he calls “the art and science of making places””—Alan Bisbort, The Sunday Republican

I have been doing some light freezer cooking for a few months now, after doing Dream Dinners for a while and discovering the joy of having a well-stocked freezer. Dream Dinners is great, but it isn't cheap so I was looking for some good recipes that will work for freezer meals. I ordered three cookbooks and this one is my favorite. I find myself making more of these recipes than the other two books combined. The introduction is really helpful and explains how to prepare for your cooking day, how to store your meals, and give lots of great tips. The recipes are tasty but not over-complicated, and though I can't ever imagine making 9 of the same thing, each recipe includes measurements for making 1, 3, 6, or 9 batches. I especially like the recipes like egg rolls and pretzels, that allow for a kind of fun family project where we can make a ton together, freeze them, and take out just a few as we need. I also like that there's a good mix of entrees, casseroles, breads/muffins, and side dishes. The recipes are very forgiving and allow for a lot of tweaking, so don't be afraid to experiment. Don't know what fontal is? Why not use ricotta and make the recipe your own? Everything I've made is a contender for the recipe rotation, but my favorite so far was the Pumpkin Cake Roll. I was intimidated by the thought of having to roll the cake as I'd never done it before, but it was really easy and everyone loved it. I might have to make 9 of those next time....

I love the original Don't Panic book and I'm loving this version too. I went through it as soon as it arrived and found 27 recipes I want to try "first" - I have had great success with the meals I've tried so far.I am not a fan of the OAMC recipes - everything is bland and not to my taste. How much cream of mushroom soup can one family eat? Yuck.I love that these recipes are varied and have spices use real, fresh ingredients and appeal to the whole family. The two Don't Panic books have changed my life. I always have something in the freezer to prepare for dinner or to share with a friend in need. I've probably given away or encouraged 30 people to buy the first book, and I would imagine that this one won't be any different.I like that this book categorizes the recipes into healthier choices, quick and easy and company-worthy. It's a neat feature, but I don't base my company worthy choices on it. I've found that most of the meals are crowd pleasers!Eagerly looking forward to the third installment!

Okay, I haven't tried all the recipes, but the ones I have tried have gone over well with the family. This cookbook and its predecessor get a lot of use in my kitchen, and I especially love the chart at the beginning of each recipe with amounts for tripling, etc. What I do is watch for sales of canned items and the like that are needed, and start stocking up. Then, when the chicken breasts, or ground beef or whatever meat is required, go on sale, I buy it up with whatever else I still need and have a cooking day to get the meals into the freezer. I've tried a bunch of recipes I found on Pinterest, but these recipes are much better.

I thought this book was very useful. I have never tried cook ahead but as my life is getting more and more busy with the kids, I like the idea of having nice home meals. The first few pages are devoted to organizing yourself and this, by far, has been the most helpful. Tips on making your shopping list, shopping, prepping, cooking and storing made this section invaluable, especially to someone like me who has never tried this before. There actually is a correct way to freeze and store .. who knew?Although this book doesn't give you an option for serving the same day you make it, a quick read through can probably let you figure it out for yourself. Each recipe comes set for 1 meal or 3-6-9 meals. Highly recommend making the 1 meal portion first to see if your family will even eat it.I can't give this a 5 star rating only because I haven't tried any of the recipes. I wanted to see if I can do this. I don't have an entire day to set aside for cooking, so I am cheating. I have modified some of our favorite family recipes by making a double batch and freezing half. The only trick there is knowing when to stop and set aside half. I have frozen a lasagna (three weeks ago) and chicken parmesan (ate two weeks later and it was still awesome), using the freezing tips found in the book. I am going to start selecting one or two recipes a week and just making those. If I can freeze even just two meals a week, that's two nights a week I am not cooking as much. (My daughter asked me why I didn't just save the leftovers and I told her because nobody wants it if it's leftovers but everyone cleans their plates when it's freshly made). In the end, if you already know how to make ahead and freeze, all this book can really offer you is more recipes (which isn't bad, if you don't already have them) in a really nice 1-3-6-9 meal set up (great if you hate math). But if you've never done this before, the tips in the front are definitely worth it. And the recipes look yummy. I'll post again once I've tried some of the recipes.

Both Don't Panic books are fabulous. The recipes are great, and these books have changed my life. These ladies have this down to a science. None of the mushy tasteless freezer recipes I've tried from other books before I found these. Their way of doing freezer meals is really good for keeping the food tasting fresh. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because they need more lighter freezer meals. While you can lighten some of them, most of these recipes are not low in calories or carbs. My hope is that they do another book of just lighter recipes.

Out of Africa (Modern Library 100 Best Nonfiction Books), by Isak Dinesen

Review

From 1914 to 1931, Danish aristocrat Baroness Karen Blixen owned and operated a coffee plantation in Kenya. After the plantation failed, she returned to Europe and began to write under the pen name Isak Dinesen. Out of Africa reads like a collection of stories in which she adheres to no strict chronology, gives no explanation of the facts of her life, and apologizes for nothing. First published in 1937, Out of Africa is not free of the colonial or racist attitudes of its time; yet, within that context, Isak Dinesen is an enlightened observer and participant as she describes the experience of British East Africa before World War II. She portrays in rich detail the vast land around her, alive with strange and wonderful human populations; the thrilling terror of a nocturnal lion hunt; a shooting accident among the Africans on her farm and its repercussions; raising and freeing an orphaned antelope fawn; getting to know the Africans and the colonial adventurers who found their way into her life. "If I know a song of Africa," she writes, "of the Giraffe, and the African new moon lying on her back, of the ploughs in the fields, and the sweaty faces of the coffee-pickers, does Africa know a song of me?" Out of Africa is that song. -- For great reviews of books for girls, check out Let's Hear It for the Girls: 375 Great Books for Readers 2-14. -- From 500 Great Books by Women; review by Lynne Auld

From the Inside Flap

In this book, the author of Seven Gothic Tales gives a true account of her life on her plantation in Kenya. She tells with classic simplicity of the ways of the country and the natives: of the beauty of the Ngong Hills and coffee trees in blossom: of her guests, from the Prince of Wales to Knudsen, the old charcoal burner, who visited her: of primitive festivals: of big game that were her near neighbors--lions, rhinos, elephants, zebras, buffaloes--and of Lulu, the little gazelle who came to live with her, unbelievably ladylike and beautiful. The Random House colophon made its debut in February 1927 on the cover of a little pamphlet called "Announcement Number One." Bennett Cerf and Donald Klopfer, the company's founders, had acquired the Modern Library from publishers Boni and Liveright two years earlier. One day, their friend the illustrator Rockwell Kent stopped by their office. Cerf later recalled, "Rockwell was sitting at my desk facing Donald, and we were talking about doing a few books on the side, when suddenly I got an inspiration and said, 'I've got the name for our publishing house. We just said we were go-ing to publish a few books on the side at random. Let's call it Random House.' Donald liked the idea, and Rockwell Kent said, 'That's a great name. I'll draw your trademark.' So, sitting at my desk, he took a piece of paper and in five minutes drew Random House, which has been our colophon ever since." Throughout the years, the mission of Random House has remained consistent: to publish books of the highest quality, at random. We are proud to continue this tradition today. This edition is set from the first American edition of 1937 and commemorates the seventy-fifth anniversary of Random House.

Beautifully written. Haunting and yet revealing. Emotionally rich with detail. This story speaks to the reader. Timeless and classic. Love it. Highly recommend.

OUT OF AFRICA,(1937). This classic nonfiction by Isak Dinesen, about her years on a farm in Africa is an eternal, much loved, worldwide bestseller; has been selected by the Modern Library as one of the 100 best nonfiction books of all time. Its opening line, “I had a farm in Africa, at the foot of the Ngong Hills,” is one of the most famous, most quoted in all literature. The memoir, which was written nearly 100 years ago with great unsentimental clarity and intelligence, portrays a way of life that has since disappeared. The book has been made into an Oscar-winning, much loved, eternally, worldwide bestselling film of the same name.In 1914, shortly before the outbreak of World War I, the Danish Baroness Karen Blixen arrived in Kenya, East Africa, with Baron Bror Blixen, her Swedish husband, to run a coffee farm. She was instantly drawn to the land, and the Continent; spent her happiest years there until the plantation, which was located at too high an altitude for coffee growing, failed. Blixen was forced to return to Denmark in 1931; it was there that she wrote this classic account of her experiences under her Dinesen pen name. A poignant farewell to her beloved farm, OUT OF AFRICA describes her strong friendships with the people of her area, her affection for the landscape and animals, her great love for the adventurer Denys Finch-Hatton.In this book, the author of SEVEN GOTHIC TALES and the short story BABETTE’S FEAST, which was also made into an Oscar-winning film, gives a true account of life on her plantation in Kenya. She tells, with forthright simplicity of the ways of the country and its natives: of the beauty of the Ngong Hills and coffee trees in blossom; of her guests, from the Prince of Wales to Knudsen, the old charcoal burner, who visited her; of local native festivals. Of big game that were her near neighbors--lions, rhinos, elephants, zebras, buffaloes--and Lulu, the little gazelle who came to live with her, who was charmingly ladylike and beautiful. There is no question but that Dinesen’s first chapter, in which she introduces herself to Africa and Africa to the world, is extremely powerful, as is her last, in which she describes her burial of her lover Finch-Hatton, and her forced departure from the land she loved. In between, however, things can get a bit poky. There is also no question but that this book, written so long ago, reflects realities of the time which some of us hope are no longer so. I have recently visited the Blixen house, and it is full of animal skins, including items which I particularly hate, those rugs with the animals’ heads still on. The writer mentions killing an animal for its pretty coat: I, and many others, I hope, believe that an animal needs her pretty coat more than any person does. The author also describes a paternalistic, maternalistic outlook on the natives; yet a native servant is beaten to death for the sin of having ridden, rather than walked, a horse home. This kind of behavior undoubtedly helped cause the bloodthirsty largely Kikuyu-dominated 1952-1960 Mau Mau insurrection in Kenya, which was aimed at white settlers and farmers, ended only with the designation of Kenya as a member of the British Commonwealth, not as a colony. But, of course, the past is past, and cannot be changed.Ah, and the writer also says, “On the Western wall of my house there was a stone seat and in front of it a table made out of a mill-stone. This stone had a tragic history: it was the upper millstone of the mill of the two murdered Indians. After the murder nobody dared to take over the mill, it was empty and silent for a long time, and I had the stone brought up to my house to form a table top, to remind me of Denmark. The Indian millers had told me that their mill-stone had come over the Sea from Bombay, as the stones of Africa are not hard enough for the work of grinding. On the top side a pattern was carved, and it had a few large brown spots on it, which my houseboys held to be the blood of the Indians, that would never come off. The millstone table in a way constituted the centre of the farm, for I used to sit behind it in all my dealings with the Natives. From the stone seat behind the mill-stone, I and Denys Finch- Hatton had one New Year seen the new moon and the planets of Venus and Jupiter all close together, in a group on the sky; it was such a radiant sight that you could hardly believe it to be real….”On my recent trip to Kenya, I got to sit on the stone seat behind the millstone table: see the attached picture. A very proud moment for me. This is not a perfect book, but it’s a must read.

As someone currently living in Africa and who just took a vacation to Kenya, this was a wonderful read. While the second part is a little harder to get through because it is episodic, I enjoyed the richness of Blixen's language, and her understanding of Africa. She understood the people she lived and worked with, and her appreciation of their culture shines through her writing. Reading this after having seen her house was a real treat; I could imagine Karen walking through each room and looking out towards her beloved hills. If you love Africa, this is a gripping read that you should make time for at some point in your life.

There are readers who may not care for this book. Don't look for a recap of the film. It's what I've come to expect when films are based on popular books. This version of Out of Africa is THE original tale of the author who lived the life. Out of Africa "the movie" was outstanding, but did not accurately depict Karen Blixen's life in Africa. We've seen movies that are "never as good as the book". It's disappointing. Sometimes the film can be better than the book. It rarely happens. I saw "Out of Africa" prior to reading the book; beautifully authored by, Isak Dinesen, a gifted story teller. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys well written stories.

A trip to Kenya is incomplete without reading this book. Her descriptions are honest and delightful and give so much insight into the character of the land I would be lost without it. Her observations on the Kikuyu people hold as true today as they did then. The only way to really understand the Somali people is to read what they were like before colonization and see how little they have changed. Africa of old is the Africa of late, only with different clothes and better technology. That which was enchanting about them still enchants, that which was terrifying or pathetic remains the same. I have walked her estates and sat where she sat. I have driven through the Kikuyu lands she begged and bartered with the government to give to her once loyal workers. The town bustles and prospers, all because of her behind the scenes successful negotiations. I have lived with the Somali and can attest to their loyalty as individuals well as their fierceness when aroused in a group. She predicted her book might become a historical document someday, and I assure you it is. Looking over the valley of Nairobi from the Ngong Hills is a thrilling experience and a sad one at the same time. Sad that a woman who planned to die and be buried in Africa was taken from the home she loved and thrust back to where she hailed. We are the benefactors of her exile. Her book stands as monument to her own charity and a looking glass into a time forgotten.

Here is an unexpected entry for the feminism reading list. Unlike Meryl Streep’s rather silly character in the movie, Baroness Blixen is a remarkably capable woman. She manages a 600 acre coffee farm, runs transport for the war, works with civil authorities and tribal leaders, and helps her neighbors the Masai by shooting the occasional lion.Blixen’s writing is realistic because it’s autobiographical, and a realist writer in Africa naturally invites comparison with her contemporary, Ernest Hemingway. She is not a professional, though, with Hemingway’s carefully pared paragraphs. Her descriptions are beautiful, as well as precise. If you’re looking at the book on Amazon, you can see what I mean from the first few pages.Out of Africa is a heartfelt memoir, a collection of vignettes. So, not great art but still worth a read just for the author’s style and sensibility.

Book itself is good. However, get the print version, not kindle version. (note: running "Kindle for PC")The search function on it is rudimentary: whole word only, no wildcards - so you better remember that this edition refers to "isospera" and not "cystoisospera"; and if you can't remember whether it's "leishmania" or "leschmania", search won't help you. There is no way to see page numbers from the print version, so if the instructor refers to "page 55", you're out of luck. Zooming is cumbersome and unintuitive - very frustrating when you'd like to be zoomed out for comfortable reading, but regularly want to zoom in on images. If you can get the book in PDF format, even the simplest PDF reader has far more functionality than the kindle program. Kindle is nice for pleasure-reading books, but I won't buy another text or reference book on it.

This book was required for my vet school parasitology lab. The index will occasionally have errors, but other than that I've found the book very helpful so far. It has colored pictures and will frequently post pictures of similar-looking parasites or eggs side-by-side to help prevent confusion. It's a great quick-reference tool.

Great for class and practice reference.

Daughter purchased for veterinary school.

Exceleent material, required for a class. I have found that the Kindle version is harder to look up specific charts/tables and page numbers cited in class are almost impossible to find without extensive searching. Would recommend that if you need this for a class go for the paper version.

Love the color photos-so helpful in identifying parasites. !I've this book!

Clear explanations, good pictures and summary about clinical manifestation of every parasite. I am 100% satisfied (and I am not generally even interested in parasitology)

Product arrived SUPER late and it was almost destroyed! After a lot of duck tape and organizing pages, it is somewhat usable.
