I really like this book. First, it has that first day of summer vibe. Reading it feels like being at the beach. (My copy was an ARC, it even has a waterproof cover for convenient beachside reading!) I love the way the three main characters Nina, Avery and Mel is something they've never questioned. Like the sun rising, they will always be best friends. But Nina fals in love over the summer. How could Avery and Mel not understand? And yet, the two of them are keeping so many secrets lately.In an effort not to spoil, it's hard being a family or friendship of three. There's always two chances to have a good time, and one huge risk of being completely broken.I'd recommend it to YA 11 and up. Maureen is a fantastic author, also I recommend following her blog! She's fantastic!

I have read a few of Maureen Johnson's books in the past, but none of them have really stood out for me. None of them have been really fantastic... they've landed somewhere between okay and good. But The Bermudez Triangle was better than all of her other books. The Bermudez Triangle was fantastic. It's realistic, and relateable.There was a time in my life when I was curious about what love really is. I knew that I loved my best friend... but I was so confused about what type of love it was. That's basically what this book is about... love, and the many different forms it comes in. This book kept me riveted from the very beginning, and it is definitely one that will put Maureen Johnson on my list of favorite authors.

I really didn't like the message this book was sending. In my opinion, it doesn't matter what the circumstances are. Cheating on your significant other is not ok. The author ends the story like everything is great, when certain people should have been held accountable for how awful they acted towards their friends and girlfriends. This was a waste of time reading.

This is a great book. Very well written, funny, and deals with difficult subjects in a great way. Very eye opening and a great read. I re-read it every couple of months

I loved this book. Sometimes you can't help who you fall for, how you handle it makes a huge difference. This book takes you on a journey about love and friendship, and the struggles one faces to have them in their lives.

Excellent book.

The book is great--I love the story and my fav. character is Mel. I wasn't a huge fan of the splash proof cover, but whatever. :)

Unfortunately I was never able to get into this book completely, but I enjoyed the parts that I did read.

This collection of plays has the ability to satisfy both the comic and tragic needs of any dramatic reader. Silver's ability to write dark comedy is perhaps unparalleled by any living playwright. He has the skill to smoothly draw the reader into an entertaining story, and then to slowly put the reader off-guard until you find yourself wrapped up in the middle of a very dark narrative.Silver uses many different theatrical approaches in the collection. Most of his plays are a mix of dialogue and monolgue, and he often takes modernist perspectives of staging. In any given play he will engage two opposing dramatic styles -- such as Noel Coward v. Berthold Brecht in Free Will and Wanton Lust -- to accentuate his message. The playwright's language flows easily and the dialogue is smooth. While some characters at times appear to have a forced three-dimensionality, the reader feels that Silver is doing this on purpose.The greatest benefit of Silver's gift is that, through comedy and the guise of comedy, he is able to present otherwise difficult subjects to us, such as deeper meanings of love and hate, loneliness, self-denial, and spiritual needs. Recommended for all theatre fans.

When I was a theatre student I rarely found plays that excited me to actually want to read, direct, or act in. I was on a crusade one year buying script after script after script. Usually I would be bored and put them down after the first scene. When I picked up Etiquette and Vitriol I think I almost died. Here was a gay playwright who didn't write your normal "I'm ok and I'm gay" play. He writes about the deconstruction of families and relationships. He has an amazing ability to give you something so horribly disgusting and then to make you laugh at it. Like in FAT MEN IN SKIRTS which is a dark comedy about a mother and son who are trapped on a desert island and their struggles to survive and their inability to acclimate back to civilized culture. At the end of the first act the mother is raped by the son and in the back ground you here Bali Hai from SOUTH PACIFIC, if you get the reference of the song there is almost no way you can stop from laughing but then you realize what you are laughing at. That is the brilliance of his writing. I highly recommend all of his works!

Nicky Silver's work will in time be noticed by the masses. For now, his plays will intrigue and entertain the relatively small number of people that pays allegiance to them. Etiquette and Vitriol is a well-shaped, fully engaging product. And it's funny. Extremely. It's hillarious really. And textured and smart. The work brings in characters of all sizes, and plants them together upon the stage, focusing on relationships -- familial, social, sexual... Each of the plays is hardly cluttered however. We are given a few figures to work with and thus these figures must be and are quite complex. They carry with them a certain authenticity often unrealized by many a playwright. Silver's work is impressive and sure to make jealous any aspiring artist. Buy the book. You'll love it.

I loved the first book and was looking forward to the second but Paige the main character pissed me off this whole book. It turns out that her crazy mom who was put in an institution isn’t crazy after all. She’s been preparing for the invasion this whole time. Paige consistently ignores her mom, ignores common sense and does idiotic things -I almost decided she was too stupid to live and put the book down, I’m hoping she finds whatever made her great in book one and uses it in book 3

Good book , but the story seems just a little unrealistic . The characters are ok , but the plot just doesn't seem cohesive to me. Don't know if I'll read book 3 .

More please. I'm so impressed that they actually made it to the space craft. In spite of being separated, they are all on their way.

The ideas in the book are timeless, and, I expect, it will be a great book for decades to come. It is very strong on both scores. And it is beautifully written: It is all there,- the history, themotivation, the philosophical points, the applications, the guided tours with friendly author-explainations of what it is all about. For me, this book was a page-turner. I read it ona long plane flight,- on my way to a wavelet conference in Guangzhou, China. -- And I didn't have jet-lag when I arrivedmore than a day later. It may be a bit demanding on some students, but it will be well worth their effort!

I am a graduate student in Math and was attracted to the book because it treats topics -- wavelets of rank other than 2, tilings, and others -- that are missing from many of the standard texts. Wavelets are approached through the introduction of matrices with certain algebraic properties rather than through orthonormal bases in L2 or scaling functions.Interesting, say I. This will give me a different perspective on many of the basic results and let me read some papers I've been struggling with.The book, however, did not fully live up to my expectations. Many difficult concepts are introduced in a cursory way, and the proofs skip a lot of details. This is not uncommon in graduate level texts, as it is expected that the reader can fill in the gaps. When I filled in the gaps, however, I discovered more than a few errors. Often, these were just distractions such as missing or incorrect constants. But at least one proof contained more serious errors.Graduate level math is hard enough without having to figure out what the authors *meant* to say. I have a master's degree in electrical engineering, and several of the mathematical concepts they mention were just vaguely familiar names to me. That would be OK if I were persuaded that those concepts were essential to an understanding of wavelets, but I'm not. The book seems somewhat ill organized as well; new terminology should be defined before it's used, not fifty pages later.

What is astonishing is that Fessler, a photographer and video installation artist writing her debut book, manages to tell this compelling story with a perfectly honed sense of restraint and respect. She handles the large volume of source material nimbly, letting each individual story breathe. The only complaint is that her research method—using a self-selected group—isn't up to snuff for academic rigor. This book was recommended to me by a friend who is an adoptee when my older sister located me through a genealogy DNA test. My family had no idea she even existed, and as my mother passed years ago, there was no way to get answers.Why would this woman, a wonderful, loving, mother, give a child away and not tell us? What happened that she would take a secret like that to the grave? How could her family not have any idea? This book explained exactly why, how, and what was happening in our society in 1964, when my mother signed away her rights to her firstborn child.It also gave me an insight into why my mother was the way she was. Why she insisted my little sister and I use birth control, going so far as to take us to the doctor for the pill, at a time when it was NOT the thing parents were doing. Why she had a yearly cycle of depression centered around the time that we now know is our older sister’s birthday. Why she never told my father, who she met not long after she gave that baby up. And other pieces, bits of information and things she said that didn’t seem that strange at the time, but looking back meant something so very different and helped put together a puzzle we never knew was there.I’m not known for being overly emotional about things, but this was very difficult for me to read, even knowing in advance the kind of societal pressures on single women of that era. I kept having to walk away for a while after reading this chapter or that story, because it was bringing everything too close for me to handle. My mother was one of these women, and although I knew she’d had an abusive childhood, I had no inkling that she had suffered this injustice as well.Even if you aren’t connected to anyone who may have been touched by this shameful era of our history, this book is a great opportunity to learn the reasons why women’s rights continues to be such an important movement, even today. We can’t let these kinds of things continue to happen 50 or even 60 years later.

I never thought a lot about my own adoption. I was always told that she couldn't take care of me and that's why I was put up for adoption to be placed with a better family. We only spoke about it a few times, and it was taboo bringing up the subject. After reading the book I was able to feel compassion for my birth mother and it opened my eyes how society played a big role in the decision. I was absolutely shocked at 50 years old. I never realized how badly young women were treated and especially out of wedlock. The author was also adopted and was very insightful. For the first time in my life, I can honestly say I don't feel bad about being adopted anymore.

I have been searching for my birth family since I was 18, over 30 years. Finally having an inter-mediator find my birth mother this last week, my birth mother was shocked that I wanted contact with her, she never told her spouse or other children. So the inter-mediator suggested that she read this book. So I decided to read it also. Wow, was I enlightened. Being one of 4 adopted, we always knew we were adopted. I always wondered through the years why she never tried to find me or why she even gave me up.This book really helped me understand it from her perspective.It is a must read!

I am of the generation affected, I remember girls who went away. The ones I knew seemed far different after they returned to school. And the rumors always went around anyways. I guess the girl's parents always thought they were keeping everything hush-hush. Yet sometimes the girl herself would return to school and tell her close friends where she had actually been. And of course, those friends told other friends, and those friends told... Sometimes the boy involved would leave school also. Especially if he or his parents didn't want him to be pressured into a quickie wedding.This very well written book accurately tells it like it was. The saddest part of all of it is that there still remain children and birth parents who have never met. I had a good friend who was a victim of this. And I say victim because I believe far too many of the children grew up with an internal feeling of having been abandoned - no matter how wonderful the adoptive parents were. Plus the unfortunate reality of life is that all adoptive parents are not wonderful, any more than all birth parents are wonderful.This is a worthwhile read for anyone who wants to get a clear picture of what the world was like for women pre "Women's lib".

I was one if those girls back in 1965. For decades I didn't talk about my "past" because I couldn't get over the "shame" of what I did and the horrible sense of loss I felt. I didn't know anyone who would understand what it was like until I read this book. It validated everything I had experienced. Fourteen years ago I was able to meet the son I had never seen or touched. He was 33 years old.I had tried to explain what the times were like in 1965/1966 to my son (as well as to my other adult daughter and son) but it was difficult for them to comprehend. The times had changed a lot! When I read a review of this book in People magazine I ordered it immediately. In places I felt like I was reading my own biography. As soon as I finished reading it (in record time) I turned back to the first page and read it again...this time highlighting passages that were important to me. I gave that copy to my son & insisted that my other two children read it too. It changed everything! All of them said that at times they were brought to tears at how horrible those times were and now they could better understand what I went through. The wonderful man I had married in 1968 never once judged me and supported my desire to find my son. This book is a must read for anyone who has gone through this and still feels the shame and loss! It changed my life!! Thank-you Ann!
