The best book on Women's Health I've ever read. Read it if you are about to get your period for the first time. Read it if you want to understand what is going on in your body every month. Read it if you are irregular, if you have thyroid problems, if you have diet issues. Read it if you are in a sexual relationship. Read it if you don't want to get pregnant and don't want to be on the pill or get an IUD. Read it if you want to get pregnant. Read it if your expecting. Read it if you are lactating. Read it if you are going through menopause. Even if you believe yourself to be health savvy and well informed It will answer questions you didn't even know you had about your own body.

I am a midwifery student and I love reading books about fertility and natural family planning. Katie Singer's book is the most comprehensive one I have read so far. Although I would tell conservative Christian readers to order "Honoring Our Cycles" instead, this one has tons of super helpful information. The fertility charting is presented in a simple easy to follow and understand way. I prefer this book over "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" because it is more holistic and offers advice about how to help balance your hormones with nutrition. I also like how this book has resources for finding other information regarding fertility, contraception, and health.

Very informative. I like all the detail and experiences, it makes it a lot easier to understand and compare. I have yet to try it out because I'm breast feeding and do not have a cycle to base anything on. But I love all the information!

Interesting read of the journey of Gutenberg Bible. This book is written in the present tense, which I find difficult to read and believe is not the best approach for a historical book. More pics of the actual BIble would have been nice.

I wanted to love this book - but sadly, I didn't. In fact, I gave up a page 145. It tells about a specific copy of the first bibles printed by Gutenberg using moveable type - Bible #45. The focus in on the owners of the bible in the 1800s and 1900 hundreds, with stories about how this copy of the bible was acquired, and the various dealers involved in buying and selling this book. It also tells the relationship of the bible's owners to the book - some were fascinated, and one just saw is a trophy to have in his collection.I didn't find the stories of the owners that interesting. I did enjoy learning a bit more about how the first bibles were produced, decorated, and bound and would have loved to have a much deeper level of detail about the manufacture of the books, how many are currently in existence, and how they vary. Some of these elements are touched upon along the way, but I would have liked to know much more.My interest just fizzled out - I didn't find the owners's stories that interesting, and was deeply curious about the missing 300+ years of the book's history.

Not only does this rather well done book give the fascinating history of one Gutenberg Bible, it also allows us a view of early printing and gives us a view into the lives of some of those who owned the books. This is a book about books and will delight those who are interested in books.Now I love book and have been collecting them....well no, not collecting them, but rather ‘hording” them for over 70 years now, and I enjoyed the motivation that other people have in collecting them. As with anything rare and extremely expensive many of the collectors were more interested in the “having” rather that the cherishing with I found to be sad.The author was just a bit light as to the specifics as to how these books were printing but doing a simply google search and a visit to the local library will bring a person up to day on this aspect quite well.The scholarship was excellent and there were plenty of source document included...something I appreciate and the book, while giving good technical data was quite readable and read more like a story rather than a tech manual.All in all I was delighted with this book and will no doubt give it another read on down the lime.

This book was a disappointment to me. Lost Gutenberg will probably be enjoyed by many readers, but the subtitle “The Astounding Story of One Book’s Five-Hundred-Year Odyssey” led me to expect just that. I was intrigued by how the author would have traced the ownership of the book, known as Book 45, back so far and eager to hear how the Gutenberg books were treated in the early years. Alas, the book did not deliver what the subtitle promises. Except for a short four-page discussion of Gutenberg and his time in the first chapter, Lost Gutenberg does not take up the history of the Gutenberg bible until it is purchased by Archibald Acheson, 3rd Earl of Gosford, in 1836. Book 45 then goes through five private owners and the Catholic Church before it is purchased by a Japanese publishing conglomerate in 1987.In 1950 the only known woman collector to own a Gutenberg, Estelle Betzold Doheny, bought Book 45. Doheny is portrayed as someone with a sincere appreciation for the book as a piece of history and a reflection of her faith as a devout Catholic. She also no doubt had a “shrewd mind for the bottom line” and considered herself to have gotten a real bargain thanks to a strong US dollar and a devaluation of the British pound. The attitudes of other owners were rather different. As author Davis says, “In some hands, books are little more than inert props”, and, indeed, Gosford even writes his name in the book and underlines it with a flourish! To such men, their book collections were simply an ostentatious display of a wealth that some of the debt-ridden owners did not really have. There are many descriptions of grand estates and feasts like a coming-of-age party where over 550 guests were served 700 pounds of plum pudding.The last third of the book is rather different, as the world-changing technology of Gutenberg meets today’s technology. In the chapter The Nuclear Bibliophiles, we hear how physicists use a proton beam from a cyclotron to get insights into Gutenberg’s printing process and to learn the secret to his non-fading ink. Estelle Doheny was not the only Book 45 owner to take advantage of international economic ups and downs. The big Japanese economic bubble of the late 20th century enabled the Japanese company Maruzen to become the first known Asian owner of a Gutenberg bible. I loved the company’s response when an American reporter asked them why they wanted a Gutenberg bible: “If it were not for Gutenberg, there would be no Maruzen.” The book now rests at Japan’s Kelo University, where modern technology is again used with great care to preserve it for future generations to revere and to bring it to a wider audience for the first time by creating a “virtual Gutenberg” online.Lost Gutenberg has a lot of interesting stories and information that will probably be enjoyed most by history buffs, who will delight in the recent histories of the owners like the heir to the Lee and Perrins Worcestershire sauce fortune or the scandal involving Estelle Doheny’s oil tycoon husband. As for me, I know enough not to judge a book by its cover, but I think I should be able to believe its title.

In this seminal and ambitious book, professor EO Wilson works to show the need and lays the foundation for the integration of the sciences and the humanities -- a principle he calls consilience. Wilson sees the soloed nature of knowledge as an error of modern and postmodern academic institutions. Then this Harvard professor points the way toward a more holistic view. It is gratifying to see this vision come alive in books such as The Happiness Hypothesis and the works of Malcolm Gladwell, as well as many progressive organizations and insitutions.Wilson sees four major areas of study that need to be integrated: (1) Environmental Policy; (2) Ethics; (3) Social Science; (4) Biology. Thus the need for an interplay between art and science.Wilson sees original scientific discovery as a key to progress, and he celebrates researchers who venture out (for the chances of success are always slim). The qualities he sees as necessary for this journey include the possession of great knowledge and the courage to follow obsessive quests. Within this voyage of discovery, Wilson points to the study of complex systems as the most important focus and pressing need.The social sciences are more complex than the physical sciences according to Wilson, and he laments the lack of interaction by these two camps. Consilience, a book by biologist Edward O. Wilson, is a masterful narrative of an amazing width of topics: science history, biology, Brain Sciences, Ecology, even an eloquant crticism of Post Modernism. In this book, Wilson proved himself one of the greatest writers of Popular science - lucid, clear, and often funny.But Consilience is more than just a popular science book. It is a call for a new kind of science - a unified discipline, a thread of knowledge leading from physics, through the key element of biological evolution, to the social sciences and even the humanities, art, religion, and the ecology.In a sense, Consilience is very similar to Daniel Dennet's Darwin's Dangerous Idea. Both books deal with a huge array of items, also categorized as a chain leading from Physics to Ethics (and, in Dennet's case to God - or to the inexsistence of God. Wilson, more modest, stops at religion, and leaves a place for some sort of a deity in his cosmology). Ultimately, although Wilson's prose is superior, and some of his ideas are wonderful (especially early in the book. I loved the suggestion that Logical Positivism can be saved through biological information on how the brain works. There is a paradox there, but it is an approach to the question I never considered), Dennet's book is more considered and is the better of the two.The reason for that is, as a scientific program, rather than as an ideology, Consilience doesn't hold water. First, the term is incredibly unclear. Sometimes, in its strong form, Consilience really is a call for one science, explaining a phenomena in all levels, from the human action to the evolutionary explanation for this phenomena, and finally to the physics behind the biology.But one is struck by how little Wilson actually explains through this. His examples are remarkably minor. He can trace dreaming about Snakes to old world primates innate fear, and he explains which color words will be more frequant then others (black and white tend to be higher up the hirarchy then Orange - hmm), but no explanation to any discrete historical event is ever offered. Does Consilience, in this strong regard, has anything to say about Keyensian economics? Can you trace the fall of the Weimar republic back to physics? Do we understand Hitchcock's movies better through an evolutionary perspective on human motives like greed and love? I don't think so.Then, sometimes consilience means only that different disciplines should engage in dialogue. There's nothing objectionable in that, but it is far from tearing down the discipline barriers. And it is constantly done anyway - the latest winner of the Noble price in economics won it for work in psychology.Wilson's Consilience keeps switching between these two extremes. Part of the problem, in my view, is that Wilson over emphasizes the links between the different levels of explanation. In particular, in the 'nature vs. nurture', debate, Wilson clearly believes everything is in the genes.Wilson constantly denies that he believes in genetic determinism. Strictly speaking, that is true, but if Wilson closes a door by allowing for culture, he opens a window by talking about predisposition - human culture works based on preexisting biological directions ("epigenetic rules") - it intensifies and elaborates them, but rarely or never ignores them. That's an interesting twist, but it amounts to little but a longer road to the same destination.Ultimately, the greatest problem I had with Consilience is that it isn't pragmatic. Yes, Unity is a wonderful thing (and despite my reservations, I tend to agree to that), but how do we get there? Wilson offers very little concrete steps. At the end, Consilience leaves you with a vivid description of the impending ecologic crisis, and a warm fuzzy feeling that consilience can solve it - but with very little about how consilience will be achieved, or indeed, what it means exactly.I don't want to end my review in such a sour note. Wilson's prose is powerful, and he is a fascinating thinker. Even if I don't agree with him, the vision is provocative and fascinating, and in a sense, that is the greatest compliment possible.

The purpose of this book is to explore the possibilities of synthesis of the various branches of study from the "hard sciences" to the arts. As can be imagined, this is a daunting task, but Wilson makes real progress in this book. We live in a complicated world, but Wilson makes a wonderful case for the ability of the human mind to make sense of it. He is at his best when he discusses the failure of the ideals of the Enlightenment, brain chemistry and the genetic connection to culture. He is less successful in connecting the natural sciences model to artistic expression.This book is a thought-provoking read and is challenging, but these are important ideas and worth devoting time and attention to exploring them. Wilson is a man of both depth and breadth of intellect and is courageous enough to use those talents to attempt to discover the possibilities of connecting our theories of various disciplines. Sure, it's speculative, but it is also amazing the power that he brings to his argument that the various areas of human understanding can be subjected to universal principles of understanding.Highly recommended!

I had purchased this book and one other for my trip to Yellowstone. This was by far the best book, had all regulations and great information on where to fish in the area. I studied this book in anticipation of my trip, had always wanted to go to Yellowstone and fish. With the use of this book and its recommendations, I had the best day of fishing in my life, caught 40 trout in one day. All I can say is get the book read it and follow the recommendations and guide you wont be sorry. Jeff

Recently, I managed to get the hay baled, unload several cow-calf pairs at the sale barn, and endure a screaming diatribe from one of my neighbors who was desiring to cut a road across the corner of my property for ill-defined reasons involving an elk hunting camp. When I demurred, spittle flew out of his mouth and he became quite agitated. For a moment, I thought I might have to get the Mossberg. In the end, he promised to make things so hot for me with our County Board that I would think the devil himself was after me. Against this backdrop, I decided it was a sovereign time to go fishing in Yellowstone.I have mixed opinions about the worth and accuracy of some Falcon Guides, but not this one. Armed with this guide, I wended my way through the bunkers of industrial tourism that blight our otherwise wondrous first national park, dodging the hatch of RVs and uncurious flabbos that choke the roads in high season. I settled first on a stretch of the Lewis River, which Merriwether Lewis never actually saw. It fished about the way the author said it would, and his descriptions were accurate and clear.Of course, anyone can write a roadside fishing guide but what about the pristine streams and creeks accessible only by foot or horse? I shouldered my pack and hiked twenty miles into the backcountry in search of some of the original strain of cutthroat. Again, his descriptions of Wolverine Creek and the upper Snake were clear and easy to follow. I used various atttractor patterns recommended by the author and some that weren't. Each produced an equal and abundant share of fish. I finished my week with a couple of nights on Pebble Creek in the NE corner of the park, fishing the undercut banks and big pools in the manner the author suggests. The cutthroat were plentiful, surprisingly sizeable, and not too selective. As a bonus, I saw a wolf pack cruising across the valley as I made my way down the stream bank.The short sections on ethics are a pleasure to read. Use barbless hooks at all times and don't poach another angler's water if he's clearly fishing a stretch you covet. Get out of bed earlier next time. The author occasionally gives short shrift to some of the more difficult trails in the Park, but if you want to get away from your fellow sportsmen and enjoy Yellowstone the way Colter did, take such damnings with a grain of salt. Overall, his impressions of the park's waters and their fishability mirror my own over the last 15 years or so. Also, he is not kidding when he estimates the number of fisherman who crowd popular sections of river, such as Slough Creek and the Yellowstone near Hayden Valley. Leave these waters in high season for the Zebco crowd and plan on fishing them in the off-season.
