The sounds and rhythms of the Caribbean and Carnival suffuse Hopkinson's second novel (after Brown Girl in the Ring). On the Carib-colonized planet of Toussaint, Antonio Habib, the scheming, philandering mayor of Cockpit County, murders his wife's lover in a rigged duel and must then flee his high-tech planet, taking with him only his young daughter, Tan-Tan. The pair end up on New Half-Way Tree, Toussaint's alternate-universe twin, a primitive and dangerous world inhabited primarily by Toussaint's exiled criminal class and the douen, an alien race reminiscent of creatures from Caribbean folklore. There, Antonio's life lacks purpose, and although he remarries, he gradually degenerates into an angry, sexually predatory drunk. Growing to adulthood, Tan-Tan is deeply scarred by her father's assaults on her. Eventually she kills him in self-defense and, pregnant with his child, flees into the forbidding bush that surrounds their small settlement. Tan-Tan is kept on the run by Antonio's jealous widow, seeking vengeance for her husband's death. Hiding among the trees, Tan-Tan learns the secrets of the douen and gradually transforms into another figure out of Caribbean folklore, the Midnight Robber, who dresses in black, spouts poetry, steals from the rich and gives to the poor. Hopkinson's rich and complex Carib English can be hard to follow at times, but it is nonetheless quite beautiful; her young protagonist, at once violent and vulnerable, is extremely well drawn. Both Toussaint, a world almost awash in nanotechnology, and the more primitive New Half-Way Tree are believable, lushly detailed worlds. This book takes you so far from reality I almost forgot I was in college and had classes to focus on. I love this book more than anything. The vernacular, plot, writing & direction is spectacular and it’s definitely a good read for those who love to venture out into other realms! I love this book so much! The ending is also bittersweet as well, it makes you crave more and more! Good read.

I simply can not understand why so many people gave this book five stars. The Caribbean dialect it is written in is distracting ( it might not be for someone more familiar with it). And the story is simplistic. It was an Interesting read, and a decent book, but nothing spectacular.

Very interesting book that is linguistically innovative and fun to read. It took me a while to get into it and to adjust to the use of language, but once I did I really enjoyed it.

Only my second read by Nalo, and I'm beginning to crave her writing. This narrative is so concise that I felt like I was in the Caribbean. Love the mythology elements!

the main character suffered a bit too much for my liking and triumphs she experienced didn't balance out all the pain.

Everyone can get their own world, not everyone will agree it's your world…

This is my favorite book now! It is wonderful in so many ways! The language is rich, I love the way Caribbean folklore is used creatively here and the characters are so well developed. It is one of the most imaginative books I have read and it provokes so much thought about history, human nature, science, and psychology. And, it features the best aliens ever!

Great condition although the cover received is not the one shown. Great novel! Nalo is an amazing lyrical brush 😘

I loved the book, as with all the undying mercenary series it is full of endless action and humor.But I really think though that if Larson plans to continue the series he needs to shake things up a bit. Adding jame's daughter to the series a couple books back and now seeing her mature a bit, along with adding a minor character to the book as a new buddy - just isn't enough change to keep the series exciting. The series needs new fleshed out characters, and/or dramatic changes to the exiting ones. Until this point we've been hearing about a civil war in galactic space, but it hasn't had much of an effect at all on the story, couldn't it shake things up a bit? It seems like we are seeing a weekly star trek episode at this point; where some new disaster pops up each week and things start out hairy, but rest assured by the end of the 1 hour episode everything will be hunky dory.I say this as a huge fan of Larson, and the series; please shake things up, add new content, go in a new direction or this will simply end up as another series that ends in monotony simply because it was too easy to keep writing the same adventure each novel with just slight variations.

I like this author, but this latest book? It almost seems like someone else wrote it.I wish there were spoiler tags (or if there are, Amazon's review page would say what they are...), because there are very specific things that lead me to believe this. As well, the story doesn't hang together in the same way, the same fashion as prior stories.Characters that had lead / important roles, that spent significant time with McGill are essentially almost strangers, barely friends it would seem. Other characters, like those up the chain of command, have entirely different personalities. Heck, *all* characters seem to have different personalities.Again, it seems like someone else wrote this story ... without even reading the series completely first.I'm not sure I'll buy book 11.. if it materializes. Book 10 is ... well, it was painful to get through.Sorry Larson -- but, sometimes only the truth can bring improvement.

I’m a longtime reader, and big fan of B V Larson’s work, but this is my first review because I can be lazy sometimes. I have the entire Star Force, Undying Mercenary, Rebel Fleet, and Lost Colony series on kindle and most of them on audible as well. “Storm World” is a great addition to an impressive series. It was refreshing to have a book where the legion/s aren’t set on perming McGill for once, and I particularly enjoyed the Rick and Morty inspired evolution of Claver. I feel like the series is setting up for something big, and I can’t wait to see where it goes from here.World Suggestsions:1.) Virtual World:McGill learns Kung Fu, and becomes the One, on a world where almost the entire population is plugged into VR units. But Angents Claver have a nefarious plan that could crash the whole system.2.) Hollow/Under World:McGill channels his inner Jules Verne as Legion Varus are sent to an honest-to-god hollow world where the entire population live underground to avoid deadly radiation from a merciless star. McGill and the Council of Clavers fight each other to secure the loyalty of the Mole People, and access to the precious minerals only available on this misbegotten world.3.) Paradise World:The Galactic Equivilant of Ibiza, McGill and Legion Varus can’t believe their luck when they are stationed on a planet of endless beaches, bars, and festival style concerts. People come from all over the galaxy to let loose and go crazy on a world where anything and everything goes. But somewhere among the throng of drugged-up revelry, the Clavers Prime are meeting with the galaxy’s most wanted arms dealer to procure a weapon that could shift the balance of power in the Galactic Civil War.

This is a series of now 10 books bearing thematic and plot element commonality. A key element of this being a far future book is that if you die and are known to have died, you can get fully revived keeping all or most of your memories. This book was the first to delve into some of the negative aspects of that. After all, you can be 600 years old but have a 20 year old body coupled with 600 years of experiences. Can a human mind deal with that breadth of memory? Well, the issue here is glossed over perhaps for revival later in the series.The plot elements, like superhero movies, are similar throughout. Humans face impossible odds but due partly or mostly to the efforts of James McGill, prevail in the end. McGill’s primary weapon is cunning and he’s beyond devious. Added to McGill is a stock group of players which slightly expand as the series moves on.If you wish to give this series a try, by all means read the first book first. That has a background you’ll need to enjoy the subsequent volumes. I recommend also reading them in order but as long as you have the first one done, the others can be read in a loose chronology.This series is light science fiction more tilted toward the knave as hero trope. I have enjoyed them all and look forward to the next.

As a former sales agent and a distribution consultant to low budget independent filmmakers, Stacy Parks is unusually well-positioned to provide producers with the information and insights they need to successfully distribute their films. At less than 150-pages or so, the book is a quick and easy read. "The Insider's Guide to Independent Film Distribution" contains terrific insights into the use of producer's representatives, sales agents and film markets. BTW: I also recommend reading and studying Guerrilla Film Marketing: The Ultimate Guide to the Branding, Marketing and Promotion of Independent Films & Filmmakers... another very helpful resource with dozens of helpful step-by-step instructions on how to create marketing and promotional campaigns and highly-effective posters, key art, teaser and trailers, IMDb listings, electronic press kits (EPKs) and many other marketing and promotional materials. Both books are highly-recommended. AAA+

Distribution is often the last thing a filmmaker thinks about when they make a film. Especially their first film. This is a huge mistake and can often keep a film from ever being seen by anyone but friends and family. Stacey's book is like an insurance policy against this type of failure and the best starting point I've seen for starting down the right path to film-making success. So much of what needs to be thought about and put in place during development, production, post and beyond needs to start early. This book is like a blueprint or road-map to help navigate the often treacherous waters of film distribution. It will help keep you from making serious mistakes that can cost you your film. It is not meant to have all the answers, but it will help point you in the right direction and raise important questions that you can then research and implement, so that your film can be as successful as possible. Besides the book, the author, Stacey Parks has one of the very best websites available dealing with all aspects of independent film, from financing to production to audience.

It's hard to read some of the bad news in this book... because it's all true. Let's face it, DVD revenues are shrinking, Redbox deals are laughable, theatrical distribution is an excuse for a distribution company to run up costs against revenue. Hulu payouts are slim.But there are things you can do to succeed. And they're all here.Best piece of advice in this thing for me was get a separate M&E track, separate from dialogue, that way foreign houses can dub their own dialogue track underneath. Ker-ching!If you're a new filmmaker, I recommend reading a section, and then putting it down for a while, then coming back to it. It's too daunting to read all the tasks and strategies ahead of you in just one sitting. By the time you get to the section that says you have to have a full Dialogue Spotting and Continuity list, you're ready to blow your indie brains out.But God help you if you actually do what's laid out in the book-- because there's no two ways about it, success is yours. You've worked hard, and now you deserve.

When my latest documentary film went into postproduction I began trying to figure out how to work with distributors. It was all so overwhelming, especially these days with digital distribution added to the mix. I looked right here on good old Amazon and found this gem of a book. I learned so much in a few days and I put the practices from the book to work for me right away. Before long, I had two distributors biting on my film. Both of them sent contracts for us to look over and once again, Stacey's book was a plethora of information on contracts and checking distributor references. My favorite part of the book was the interviews with distributors. With the book and our contracts in hand I was able to decipher all of the legalese and figure out what I needed to negotiate for.Park's book strikes an excellent balance between digital and conventional distribution models. The book gave me the confidence to actually have a conversation with a distributor and know what I was talking about and what to ask for. I am happy to keep this book on my bookshelf and use it again and again. Thank you Stacey!!

Stacey knows the business (the hurdles & opportunities we face), doesn't pull any punches, and has constructed a logical and balanced book that saved me from making major mistakes, got my film done at the budget I established, and has provided me with options for distribution. It was like getting a four year degree in film in one well constructed read. Does is guarantee success? Of course not. Does it improve the odds if you follow her advice. For sure. Don't tackle the Independent Film world without it.

I'm producing my first feature film. A friend of mine recommended checking out Stacey Parks and her Film Specific website. I loved Stacey's "reality check" approach. "If your feature is not a festival darling, then what? Or even if it is, can you make back your investment?" I've asked myself these questions so I decided to check out her guide book. It's a quick read and deftly highlights the ever changing process of how a film reaches the marketplace, and how to best prepare your "specific" film to reach its target audience. There are step by steps on how to navigate both traditional and non-traditional distribution models as well as the marketing involved for both. I enjoyed the case studies/interviews inserted throughout. They definitely give a more personal insight into how other producers are making the new models work for them. This will be a referral source I use throughout the process, alongside of the resources Stacey has online. Highly recommend it to anyone new to distribution.

I was pleased to get this book because I started the same journey at 55, except I wasn't an academic. I give it 4 stars because sometimes the anecdotes seem overdone as if she is trying too hard to be interesting, adding, for example, descriptions of the people, scenes and interactions during her commute which don't elucidate her life. Her personal story is endearing and powerful enough as it is. Perhaps the author doesn't entirely believe readers will take her seriously. But at last, the flow of the writing became more natural and I really got into it. I can really relate to the age bias she describes. Her experience at RISD was enlightening. She manages to convey all the feelings one goes through on this path as the journey evolves. Becoming an artist is a long, long process of becoming self-reliant and confident in your goal. The journey is yours, and yours alone. Eventually, you can develop a healthy boundary between yourself and other people, find self-acceptance, and accept others as they are. I believe no one can prescribe an age limit for emerging artists or writers. There are no rules in creative freedom. This book is totally worth it, especially if you want to be creative. Go for it!

Painter's "Old in Art School" is many things, not the least of which is filled with joy. Joy in painting, creating, learning, and life itself. It's also wise, sometimes savage in its takedowns, even more its self-assessments, and sometimes very funny in its closely rendered and deeply considered examinations of race and gender and social class and age in America and the Art World, and it is unabashedly expressive of the wonders of New Jersey. Painter's voice rings out with exuberant, vivid observation and cool analysis. She tells the reader much about higher learning, the nature of art school and of the professional art world (not all of it pretty), making her book a great companion to Sarah Thornton's 2009, "Seven Days in the Art World". Painter also points her reader to a great many black and/or women artists. The urge to stop and Google search the people she mentions is hard to resist. And because Painter writes about the near whole of her life in this memoir, she also renders in aching detail the final years of her parents' lives. Early in the book, Painter goes off on a brief rant as she recounts being at once an undergraduate student and a historian trying to complete, The History of White People. Even though I'd read her earlier book, somehow it hadn't occurred to me until she mentions this confluence that Painter was continuing to write masterful and influential histories while she was also studying painting and art history.

Very interesting read, I am a retiree returning to art school after a different career. I am white but a woman. I dropped out of art school at the age of 20 after being taunted by male friends that there were no great woman artists so why bother.My father already insisted that I become a nurse which I did. I drew and painted whenever I could find spare time but with long absences since I found myself a single mom with 4 daughters.I too got the “ why are you not better at this?” “ isn’t it too late to travel down this road? “ when I returned to undergraduate classes. But I have greatly improved with love of the endeavor and lots of grit. The journey itself is definitely worth the struggle. Thanks for your insights.

Nell Painter is my hero! She's intelligent, funny, a good and engaging scholar/writer and oh so courageous for going to art school after retirement. As usual, an excellent and erudite commentator on the intersection-ality of race, age, gender and politics and this time through her very personal experience!

A woman who (in her late 60's at the time) writes a brilliant memoir about her journey through undergrad and graduate art school. Engaging, enlightening and thoroughly enjoyable. It’s like sitting down with a great friend who shares with you, in her unique voice, her observations and first hand experience of The Art World, her fellow students (generations younger), her mentors and detractors. Nell Painter is fearless in her determination to reach for a discipline that brings her euphoria and grief. How do you pursue an entirely new direction - in her case an MFA in art - after a long, successful, multi-degreed career as a historian? How do you cope with the disparity between your view of the world - in her case the 20th century - and that of your schoolmates? Nell Painter writes with great humor and human identity and insight. I applaud her fortitude. I admire her struggle.

This book interested me for its particulars on art, artists, nature of art, the art "world", and technical matters like colors and materials. But is was a lot more than this. It was a book about being old and female and black in the art and academic world. I could identify with the first two, and learned much about the third. As thought this were not enough, it is also a book about taking care of aging parents. This part of her book was not "pretty" and sometimes I found her responses to her father a bit cold and self absorbed. But isn't this how we always react when women don't drop everything to help family? I've been there too!! I was judging Painter as women are so often judged - and this got me thinking. The book is also beautifully produced, with lovely prints of Painter's work. I agree with other comments - I wish she had included some pictures of art she referenced beyond her own. There is no doubt this woman pays strong attention to her own self, but I am going to stand up and applaud. She earned it. I am grateful for her book, and will read others by her.

I was excited to dive into this book, hopeful for little nuggets of wisdom for my similar journey and perhaps a laugh or two in self reflection. Instead the reader encounters a self indulgent, needy author who repetitively presents an inventory of her resume ad nauseaum. She used this book to disparage other students all while trying to impress the reader by spewing supercilious comments and including very little about process or art school. This book had so much potential but was so disappointing.

I was very excited to read this book because I have followed the author online and really like the subject. Unfortunately, much of the book is just a rehash of her articles and postings. She uses the same examples again and again and although she references statistics showings tens of thousands of successful businesses meeting her criteria, she only provides anecdotal evidence and minimal examples to "prove" her claims.My disappointment comes not from finding the information faulty or unhelpful, but that I wanted a much deeper discussion. This subject is at the leading edge of a massive shift in the workforce and yet the author couldn't come up with more than 200 pages. So it's less of an "indispensable guide to earning a six-figure take-home income on your own terms" and more of an overview of a handful of people who are early adopters of a new way of working.If you have not read the author's work online then I 100% recommend reading this. If you are familiar with her work then you can still read the book, but you should temper your expectations a little.

As a seasoned entrepreneur myself (I fall into the last category of annual revenues Elaine mentions), I found this book to be very inspiring! Elaine's years of expertise in interviewing really shine through. I can relate to a few of the people featured. My favorites are: the Nutritionista, property investor, ebook seller, and the author of The Morning Miracle. The first one--owner of the planner business just blew me away!I kept reading certain sections out loud to my husband. I could not put this book down! Along with the entrepreneurs she interviewed, Elaine also gives some great, true advice. She even reminds you to maintain your health while running your business. When I got to this section, I said "Off to the gym!" I took the book with me, read it while I was on the elliptical and again while walking on the treadmill. It's THAT good!This book is a great read for the aspiring entrepreneur, or those who are already in business and just need that extra push to create the kind of business and lifestyle they truly want. At the end, Elaine even has worksheets and references to encourage you to start your own business.As someone who is like a sponge that soaks up knowledge, I feel so inspired and confident that I'm on the way to propelling my own business to a million dollars!

I live, study and work in the New York Tri-State region and this book is pretty great because the author also lived, worked and studied in the same region. Whats good about that? The Human Development and Expliotation is our region is very diverse and often connects directly with other prominent regions around the globe. The author basically covers alot of legalities, origins, design principles, and field work analysis really well.This was one of the easier to read text in my classes, not because it is written in laymans terms, but he writes the ideas in a clear concise manner and covers alot of material with great efficiency using (the best I've seen in any enviro-engineering text) superb diaghrams, pictures and charts.As a whole I felt the text demystifies alot of what this field is about so I usually recommend it to other non-environmental engineers, planners and designers that I come across in my school and work.The book is expensive but I felt it was one of those few (if any) books you'll ever buy in college that is worth every penny.This one is a keeper!

This is a bit different from many art books. The artist James Wyeth asked dancer Rudolf Nureyev if he would pose for a portrait. Whereas Nureyev initially declined, later he accepted the invitation and Jamie Wyeth developed over 30 preliminary mixed media drawings of the dancer before completing the final oil painting of the artist. The book includes these 30 drawings, the final oil, and a series of mixed media drawings that appear to be derived from photographs of the dance on stage. I found the work to be highly compelling for Nureyev was a strikingly handsome man with extremely strong facial features that Wyeth never played down or softened. Possibly the most subdued work in the book is the final oil painting, with all the subtle tones and textures of a Thomas Eakins painting. However, it is the wildest and most dramatic drawings that seemed to capture the personality of Nureyev. With wild hair and dramatic black eye-liner, some images capture the androgynous aspect of Nureyev. Most of the preliminary drawings are black and white chalk or conti-crayon on yellow ochre or burnt sienna pastel paper. However, often gouache is also used to dramatic effects on the works. I recommend the book to fans of Nureyev but also for young artists who may need examples of the pains and plans that a professional artist must undertake to derive the final selection of composition for a finished portrait. Wyeth is both controlled and then at times draws with wild abandon and his drawings are highly compelling.

Any fan of Wyeth, Nureyev, or ballet in general should have this for their library. Revealing in a way a photograph just is not. I was touched by the drawings and the stories behind them.

Anyone who loves Nureyev and Wyath's work will love this book.
