As a teen and young adult, I devoured books about Himalayan expeditions by Bennington, Roskelly, Wickwire and the like. They spurred me on to mountain adventures of my own. Today, mountains are summitted by ultra fast, lean groups, or by bloated pay-to-play guided tours.This book took me back to those thrilling days of mountain expeditions, with the logistical, technological, and interpersonal challenges that all must be overcome to find success. Fascinating, I speed read through it in about four sittings.

This book was so very well written. This is the 3rd book I have read about caves and people who dive them. I haved learned a great deal and it is facinating. Some things they do, when exploring these caves, I could never do. I give them all so much credit for their bravery. I highly recommend this book!

As a wanna be cave diver, I found this book to be amazing. The personality if those who explore the unknown is fascinating. I couldn't put this book down, even though I knew who would live and die.This is a great book written by two of the cavers involved in the expedition. Those two are well-known for their expertise and discoveries. There are many other well known divers and cavers included in this book. I think anybody who enjoys adventure sports would find this to be a great book.I couldn't put it down and wished that it wouldn't end!

Interesting and a little hair raising. To explore in conditions like these, you must possess some crazy. But fascinating none the less. well worth reading.

As a co-author of the new edition, I'm obviously a bit biased, but I think this book occupies a unique position in this field as a broad advanced-undergraduate/beginning-graduate introduction to photonic crystals and light in periodic media, focusing on timeless fundamentals and richly illustrated with examples of many different structures. Compared to the first edition, it is greatly expanded and improved, with almost every chapter seeing significant revisions and several entirely new chapters; the second edition is roughly double the length of the first.However, the main reason I am posting here is that you don't need to take my word for it; the publishers have allowed us to post a PDF of the entire book online for no cost, so you can determine whether it is useful to you before purchasing the paper version (beautifully printed in full color). See ab-initio.mit.edu/book (where you can also find errata etcetera).Compared to classic textbooks like Hecht or Jackson, this book occupies a somewhat different ground. It is not concerned with geometric optics (where the wavelength is small compared to the structure) or with the handful of geometries that can be solved almost completely analytically (vacuum, planes, cylinders, and spheres). Rather, it deals with the vast array of problems in nanophotonics where the wavelength is comparable to the structure, and especially with periodic (or partially periodic) "crystalline" structures. In these cases, although completely analytical solutions are usually impossible, the book explains how there are more general principles such as symmetry and linear algebra that reveal the fundamental structure and behavior of light in such media. The book uses these principles to explain the most important optical properties of these structures, from confinement of light in 3d band gaps to periodic dielectric waveguides and optical fibers. It also introduces the powerful tool of temporal coupled-mode theory to design devices by coupling waveguides and microcavities.

This visually attractive book is also very informative, particularly for someone with a background in solid-state physics and eletromagnetism. The reformulation of Maxwell's equations as a Hamiltonian theory was a very interesting insight for someone (me, OK?) with a traditional physics graduate school education. Another interesting insight is that scalar diffraction theory works when polarization effects are unimportant, and polarization effects are unimportant when the periodicity is large compared to the wavelength of light. A third is the development of the eigenvalue as the mode-weighted average over the bulk indices of refraction of the materials composing the structure.The mathematical development is just perfect to get the main ideas across without burying the reader. There are entrees into the literature for more advanced developments.

The authors give great physical explanations with just the right amount of mathematical rigor. The analogy with quantum mechanics is made continuously through the text which helps with intuition. This book is definitely going to be a classic.

Great easy to read, conceptually covers relevant main and background material, very colorful supporting pictures and plots, written by experts in this field.

First, a disclaimer: I am a graduate student working within the research group of two of the authors (JDJ & SGJ). I used the first edition of this book (as did many other researchers) extensively when being first introduced to this field and have been able to compare it with this most recent edition given my familiarity with both editions. The 2nd edition is a significant improvement over the 1st edition, for many reasons: 1) the content is further polished and well presented (owing in part to the emphasis on clarity in communication placed within our group), 2) the figures, equations, and fonts are much more readable than before and 3) there are at least three new chapters that provide timely information on emerging subfields (periodic dielectric waveguides, photonic crystal slabs and photonic crystal fibers). An extensive (and expanded) bibliography and appendix (with an extra section on computational photonics) supplement the main text well. The book is at least twice as thick as the 1st edition with new and updated content and is exquisitely bound & illustrated. Indeed, it is true that a free copy of this book has been posted on the authors' website, but owning a hard copy is a valuable reference as well. The 2nd edition is not simply a superficial revision of the 1st, it is a much needed improvement for a field that has seen a tremendous amount of growth in the intervening years of the books' first publication.

This is a great calendar. The magnets hold very well on the fridge and I am so happy to have a place where everyone can see what’s coming for the week. There is plenty of room on each day to make notes of special appts and events and the shopping list notes on the side are super helpful for all to add to. Love the font and colors, too, and small illustrations. The only minor issue I have with it is when a week involves a switch to a new month, even if it’s the last day of that week that moves to a new month, the month indicated at the top of that week is the new/next month. I would personally prefer it to stay the “old” month or at least indicate both like “Mar/Apr”. It seems ridiculous, I know, but it has given me quite a start a few times when I just give a glance on Sunday or Monday and see the next month written there and I think I’ve gone into a time warp!***Updated for 2018 Edition*** Agree with other reviewers about the 2018 calendar. The lack of perforation for the shopping list is greatly missed! Very disappointed with that change. Also still wishing that weeks that split the end/beginning of months would indicate that at the top, ie. Jan/Feb.

SAD theres NO perforated edge for the shopping list. I love this calendar from 2017 but they changed it to requiring scissors.

We loved using this calendar last year! The market list feature is by far one of the best parts! Write down what you need for your plan, or what you realize you're missing and rip it off when you need to go to the store! You could even leave the market list on for the next week if you thought of something to write in later during the week and save the market list for the following week, or weeks ahead. I went to rip off my market list this year... and ripped off the whole week. My calendar must have missed the perforation process during assembly.... Pretty useless for grocery shopping this year ;(

This is my 3d year for this calendar. I bought it once on a whim when it was half off. And then I had to hunt for it when I didn’t know the name of the calendar. The only thing I don’t like is that previous versions had perforations from the week day to the list for shopping and you merely folded it at the perforations and tore off the list and took it shopping. Now you have to cut on the dotted line. But I still love it. Guess I should have given it a 4-star rating. But I still love it and use the shopping list every week.

Love this magneticweekly calendar! It goes on my fridge & I can always know what's going on in my life!!! I've had this calendar for the past years now & won't get any other calendar. Little disappointed though, in years past the "list" has been perforated so it can tear off quickly & easily. Now this year the design has changed and requires an extra step of needing to be cut off. Wastes a good 5 minutes or more to track down scissors & cut my grocery list off. Really hope this company goes back to making it perforated! Other than this, I love everything about this product.

The calendar shipped from the UK but arrived fairly quickly (in about 2 weeks). It has 2 horizontal magnetic strips on the back so it sticks firmly to the refrigerator door. It is a little annoying that the grocery list feature isn't perforated, but it's no biggie. I'm looking forward to using this calendar!

I love these calendars and have been using them for years. This year, the grocery list section is not perforated so you have to cut it off with scissors. Defeats the purpose of being on there and is super inconvenient. I won't buy one for next year if it is the same way.

2nd year buying this calendar and I love everything about it except for the fact they took away the perforation between the calendar and list on the side. It’s very annoying to cut it and disappointing they changed it for the worse.

This book was evidently written by an experienced educator who provides examples that are meaningful and includes exercises within the text to test that the reader understands each critical step in the reasoning. The book is well structured, building from a brief explanation of Earth's climate through chapters dealing with electromagnetic radiation, and how it is emitted, absorbed and scattered by the atmosphere. Its chapters on radiative transfer and the relationship between absorption bands and atmospheric heating provide a basic amount of detail of these complex processes but there are references to more detailed accounts for those who are interested. The diagrams are well chosen and clearly presented and there are very few typographic errors in the text which is easily read. Some may find the mathematics difficult and not follow all the steps in the development of important formulae, but there is generally adequate explanation of each step and an attempt to explain the implications of major formulae. The book is titled a First Course and achieves that objective very well.

I bought this book to supplement the textbook for a radiation course I was enrolled in. This should have been the book used in the course as it was very clear and made some of the more complex topics easy for an advanced undergraduate audience. Some of the problems could be slightly improved, but this is on the same level as the thermodynamics book by this author. 'A First Course in Atmospheric Radiation' will be on my shelf for many years as a handy reference when I need some quick, accurate, and understandable radiation information.

This is the clearest of several books that I purchased to learn how climate scientists calculate radiative forcing as a function of atmospheric CO2 concentration. The author's prose and illustrations excel. Undergraduate level math and physics are prerequisites. In my case, I needed to relearn some of what I studied over 40 years ago. That was part of the fun.

This is a recommended/required text for my Physical Meteorology class. It is exactly what I needed, arrived in excellent condition and in fast time, and I am able to rent it for the price I wanted. The other textbook rentals would not offer the price that Amazon did.

The book is carefully written and develops the subject from scratch in a very readable way. It is not overly mathematical, but has all the information that is necessary for the reader to get to grips with a very complex subject.

Easy to read with great explanations of important equations. It steps you through the important aspects of atmospheric radiation in an easily accessible manner which I found very helpful.

I really like this book. First, it has that first day of summer vibe. Reading it feels like being at the beach. (My copy was an ARC, it even has a waterproof cover for convenient beachside reading!) I love the way the three main characters Nina, Avery and Mel is something they've never questioned. Like the sun rising, they will always be best friends. But Nina fals in love over the summer. How could Avery and Mel not understand? And yet, the two of them are keeping so many secrets lately.In an effort not to spoil, it's hard being a family or friendship of three. There's always two chances to have a good time, and one huge risk of being completely broken.I'd recommend it to YA 11 and up. Maureen is a fantastic author, also I recommend following her blog! She's fantastic!

I have read a few of Maureen Johnson's books in the past, but none of them have really stood out for me. None of them have been really fantastic... they've landed somewhere between okay and good. But The Bermudez Triangle was better than all of her other books. The Bermudez Triangle was fantastic. It's realistic, and relateable.There was a time in my life when I was curious about what love really is. I knew that I loved my best friend... but I was so confused about what type of love it was. That's basically what this book is about... love, and the many different forms it comes in. This book kept me riveted from the very beginning, and it is definitely one that will put Maureen Johnson on my list of favorite authors.

I really didn't like the message this book was sending. In my opinion, it doesn't matter what the circumstances are. Cheating on your significant other is not ok. The author ends the story like everything is great, when certain people should have been held accountable for how awful they acted towards their friends and girlfriends. This was a waste of time reading.

This is a great book. Very well written, funny, and deals with difficult subjects in a great way. Very eye opening and a great read. I re-read it every couple of months

I loved this book. Sometimes you can't help who you fall for, how you handle it makes a huge difference. This book takes you on a journey about love and friendship, and the struggles one faces to have them in their lives.

Excellent book.

The book is great--I love the story and my fav. character is Mel. I wasn't a huge fan of the splash proof cover, but whatever. :)

Unfortunately I was never able to get into this book completely, but I enjoyed the parts that I did read.

This collection of plays has the ability to satisfy both the comic and tragic needs of any dramatic reader. Silver's ability to write dark comedy is perhaps unparalleled by any living playwright. He has the skill to smoothly draw the reader into an entertaining story, and then to slowly put the reader off-guard until you find yourself wrapped up in the middle of a very dark narrative.Silver uses many different theatrical approaches in the collection. Most of his plays are a mix of dialogue and monolgue, and he often takes modernist perspectives of staging. In any given play he will engage two opposing dramatic styles -- such as Noel Coward v. Berthold Brecht in Free Will and Wanton Lust -- to accentuate his message. The playwright's language flows easily and the dialogue is smooth. While some characters at times appear to have a forced three-dimensionality, the reader feels that Silver is doing this on purpose.The greatest benefit of Silver's gift is that, through comedy and the guise of comedy, he is able to present otherwise difficult subjects to us, such as deeper meanings of love and hate, loneliness, self-denial, and spiritual needs. Recommended for all theatre fans.

When I was a theatre student I rarely found plays that excited me to actually want to read, direct, or act in. I was on a crusade one year buying script after script after script. Usually I would be bored and put them down after the first scene. When I picked up Etiquette and Vitriol I think I almost died. Here was a gay playwright who didn't write your normal "I'm ok and I'm gay" play. He writes about the deconstruction of families and relationships. He has an amazing ability to give you something so horribly disgusting and then to make you laugh at it. Like in FAT MEN IN SKIRTS which is a dark comedy about a mother and son who are trapped on a desert island and their struggles to survive and their inability to acclimate back to civilized culture. At the end of the first act the mother is raped by the son and in the back ground you here Bali Hai from SOUTH PACIFIC, if you get the reference of the song there is almost no way you can stop from laughing but then you realize what you are laughing at. That is the brilliance of his writing. I highly recommend all of his works!

Nicky Silver's work will in time be noticed by the masses. For now, his plays will intrigue and entertain the relatively small number of people that pays allegiance to them. Etiquette and Vitriol is a well-shaped, fully engaging product. And it's funny. Extremely. It's hillarious really. And textured and smart. The work brings in characters of all sizes, and plants them together upon the stage, focusing on relationships -- familial, social, sexual... Each of the plays is hardly cluttered however. We are given a few figures to work with and thus these figures must be and are quite complex. They carry with them a certain authenticity often unrealized by many a playwright. Silver's work is impressive and sure to make jealous any aspiring artist. Buy the book. You'll love it.

I loved the first book and was looking forward to the second but Paige the main character pissed me off this whole book. It turns out that her crazy mom who was put in an institution isn’t crazy after all. She’s been preparing for the invasion this whole time. Paige consistently ignores her mom, ignores common sense and does idiotic things -I almost decided she was too stupid to live and put the book down, I’m hoping she finds whatever made her great in book one and uses it in book 3

Good book , but the story seems just a little unrealistic . The characters are ok , but the plot just doesn't seem cohesive to me. Don't know if I'll read book 3 .

More please. I'm so impressed that they actually made it to the space craft. In spite of being separated, they are all on their way.
