Dave Brown is a retired engineer and high school science teacher. When he was 66 years old, he was diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment and was told this was almost certainly the early stages of Alzheimer's disease. Notably, an MRI found that his hippocampus had shrunk to the point that it was in the first (lowest) percentile of the general population. The hippocampus is the part of the brain most key to short-term memory, and his had shriveled dramatically. As time progressed, his symptoms increased, his work became more challenging, and he found it necessary to stop driving. Stunned, but not willing to be overcome by the disease, he investigated the disease and learned what science was saying about how to treat it. The first thing he learned was that there were no drugs available to reverse, stop, or even slow the progress of the disease. There were drugs to treat the symptoms, but people on these drugs ended up in the same place at the same time -- dead in a few years. But there was plenty of research showing the effectiveness of other strategies to stop and even reverse the progress of the disease. He tried a mix of these strategies and found that they actually worked! Atrophy of his brain was halted, and his cognitive test scores stopped their decline and even showed signs of reversal. Most notably, the powerful depression of mood was reversed, and his joy of life returned. David Brown is eager to share his story, because he is certain that others will benefit. In "Beating the Dementia Monster," he tells the story of the progress of the disease and how he stopped it. It provides a lively account of his experience, what he did, and discussions of the scientific research that explains why he has been so successful.

Brief, but informative look at what worked for the author in fighting cognitive impairment, and how he gradually recognized he had an issue, and then did the research to fight back. My 98 year old mother-in-law lives with us and it's clear that regular daily exercise is one of the things that has made her long life possible, so I was already on board with the author's cardio. However, I liked that he was specific about various things, including exactly what he's doing with a treadmill in terms of duration, slope, and speed, and how often he exercises. He brings an engineer's perspective to this fight, while not hyping anything. It's a personal account and gives everyone hope for fighting cognitive impairment.

Purchased and down loaded the book yesterday; Read thru it last night. It was both interesting and informative. Much of the information parallels the info I get from my Neurologist and other friends in the medical community, but the author's first-hand experience plus his own research adds a more in-depth perspective.I especially can relate to the not enjoying life, withdrawal/isolation, depression and sense of failure the accompany it. His positive experience with the exercise, social engagement and diet regimens Is interesting to see from a first party participant. My neurologist agrees that they are best hope that medical science can offer for now.Thanks for writing it and offering to us. Hope others take advantage of it too.

I know David Brown, the author of this book. In his book, David describes his descent into Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and how he is effectually fighting it. From observing him and reading his book I think he may be onto something! He describes how he had to stop driving due to AD. A couple years later I am riding around with him (his driving is fine). The book describes an approach that seems to work in his case, and it may well work in others. In addition to describing his approach to the disease, the book describes the characteristics of AD and current medical thought regarding it. The book is written for the layman, and while it provides some technical information it does so in a way that is easy to follow. Overriding all this is the compelling story of a man facing a grave personal challenge and rising to overcome it. If you are wondering (or worrying) about Alzheimer's Disease you will find this to be a helpful book.

Looking for an answer to my fears of inheriting my mother's Alzheimer's Dementia, I was particularly interested in Brown's book. At 73, I'm no spring chicken myself and I needed to know if my growing forgetfulness boded a terrifying future. One look at the Table of Contents of "Beating the Dementia Monster" was like lighting a clear path to a brighter future. This book is like a mini-library of all the things you need to know about cognitive impairment - what works and what doesn't and where to find answers. The book is well researched, well organized, concise and clear, and most importantly hopeful. Because of Mr. Brown's efforts, I am now on that "clear path," and growing older just means more opportunities to grow and learn.

I thought Dave Brown's book was very informative and in his case proves that MCI can be reversed through proper nutrition and exercise. Dave proved that there is hope for people with MCI/Alzheimer's disease that they too can make positive lifestyle changes to improve the quality of their life. One must make a decision and carry through on their commitment to change their life for the greater good because the reversal will not happen overnight.

Having seen the effects of dementia in both my maternal grandmother and my uncle, this is not a disease you want to mess with. Unfortunately, medical science has progressed little in terms of an allopathic solution to the disease. David Brown's book is an engaging read on this subject. He balances his personal experience with documented evidence of treatment options. While he and I may differ on the efficacy of supplementation in the disease process, the best point he makes is that taking charge of your health can alter the outcome positively. Cure or no cure, your own actions play a significant role in how this disease plays out. David Brown's books should inspire you to fight.

Inspiring and a quick read providing good advice. Liked the writer's approach of allowing the reader to accompany him through each step of his journey and appreciated the way he presented his measured results. This book reinforces the idea we can't sit around and wait for the medical profession to come up with a magic pill as was the case when my father passed away from Alzheimers at athe age of 72 in 2011. I can't say for certain that following the writer's suggestions would have provided my father with the same relief as it did for the writer, but it would have given him one more tool in his toolbox to fight this disease and in a much more proactive way. Thank you David for sharing your story.

Loved the little novella's for the 3 couples. All 3 were a little scattered and rushed but I enjoyed them. ALOT of editing errors - sorry but this is a big issue for me when authors charge $4-$5 a book. If reviewers would call the authors on it, maybe better quality books would be put out.Shade & Lilly - its hard not to enjoy this couple a great little blurb...loved the fact that Lilly tried to stand up to Harvey but Shade took over and ended it....Ice & Grace - the issue with their marriage started in T.A. it went on a little longer than it should with an ending way to fast for them fighting over several months. She knew who and what he was when she married him, altho I did like the ending. Would have liked a bit more with Grace and Porsche as well as more interaction with the Predators...Mika/Jonas & Hammer - this one moved too fast it needed more to the story instead of a short novella. The story is rushed and misleading on Mika's job and you learn about her past at the very end and it closes out Ice & Grace's story as well. Who is Linc? Mika is never mentioned in Grace's past so that came out of sequence.... alot of this story made no sense until the end. Why was Mika in Treepoint? over all story would have made more sense had a bit more background come earlier in the book. Since when do the Last Riders (Shade in particular) let Greer walk all over him. Not in the early LR Books but as usual the author is changing the character personalities and now the LR are wimps... such a shame.All 3 stories were good and I enjoyed them, fix the editing, and take a bit more time to tell the story without being rushed...all 3 left the ending open for more books as usual, nothing really left hanging just open... Will there be a new series on the Road Slayers?

This book gone differently then I expected. Or more correctly, my feelings about it. I enjoyed more about something what I didn't expected to.I loved Shade and Lily part most. Once again Shade love was everything.Ice and Grace... I think they needed more chapters then they got. It felt.... How to express it... After all the struggle showed that they had in TA book, it seemed that theirs 'struggle' was too easily solved. For this quick read the problem shouldn't had caused so much and for so long a strain between Ice and Grace.Hammer, Jonas and Mika... They needed more chapters too, because it felt too rushed and I didn't felt their connection to click in. It more felt like a prologue to theirs full story.

I am a huge Jamie Begley fan but this book confused me so much that I am still confused after reading. The different parts were very confusing and I was not clear on how they all relate to each other. It seemed disjointed. There was an attempt to connect things at the end but that felt rushed so the connection wasn't strongly established. Can someone please tell me what Logan drew that caused Shade to be so rattled? Hammer and Jonas book was rushed. I don't see how you go from a virgin to being in a poly to being in love all from a "one night stand", which is even more confusing because I must have missed her having sex with Hammer that first night (that's how much I was confused). Shade and Lily will always be a fan favorite but please Jamie, don't ever do a book like this again. This does not justice and has no added value to your amazing body of work. I gave it three starts because its Jamie. I really want to give this book two stars.

I felt for Shade when he felt he was so busy he missed something about his Lily.Also Gavin’s face when he saw who I’m assuming his his lady! I was thinking they might be together but there so many conflicting hints.And I want another book on Jo and raider so bad!!Chasing Rainbows (Ice and Grace) - 3.5 starsThis was a nice insight into the relationship issues of Ice and Grace. However, I wasn’t exactly sure why they were arguing so much about, but it was interesting watching them work through it.Not sure what this added to Ginny’s story but I think it did set it up for Halo for Three.Halo for Three (Hammer, Jonas and Mika - but also Ice and Shade) - 3.75 starsThis story wraps up the anthology and we also get a glimpse into the deep friendship between Hammer and Jonas. They are best friends who are looking for their special woman to share and that is where Mika comes along. I don’t want to reveal too much, but it seems Mika has a deep and tragic connection to one of the wives. This story felt shorter than the others because our trio’s story pretty much gets resolved quickly and then it was onto other things.But mostly, we get an ending that wraps up a few things while also adding some more questions. Also the hospital scene was very confusing and couldn’t who was there or who was talking, I was just lost; but I was happy with why they were all there.I’m not sure why Logan’s drawing gave Shade such a fierce reaction, but I felt like I missed an implied statement.

I absolutely love every single one of these guides by Wallpaper*. They are directed towards people more into art, design, and the more trendy locations in each city, but if that is what interests you, you will love them. They always recommend places where locals might check out and are not huge tourist traps. The restaurant and bar recommendations are always spot on!

I love Wallpaper* City Guides and this issue is no exception. Based on its recommendations, I found a great place to have dinner and get a haircut in NYC. If you want to learn about Times Square or other tourist traps, get Frommer's or Fodor's. Wallpaper* City Guide are for those who are looking for a more unique, design-based travel experience. I'm a big fan.

It's good as a supplement to other more comprehensive city guides, but I wouldn't buy this one if you're only getting one guide. It's more focused on shops and hot restaurants I would say. Definitely had some cool trendy places to eat in it.

This is not a guide book at all. It is essentially a magazine advertisement section. The "landmarks" chapter is 2 pictures of office buildings. I am quite sure that the few clothing stores, hotels and galleries in this "guide" paid to be included. There isn't information about anything useful. I love Wallpaper Magazine, but this book is garbage.

It is also almost impossible to downplay how much Darick Robertston's art--over-detailed and highly manic--aim the comic, often fleshing out small parts of the world in an oversaturated dystopia that feels bright, over-worked, and overly busy but always fits the mood without going into gothic, grim-meat hook futures. Imagine Bladerunner with much better lighting. Highly enjoyable, concerned with world building, politics, and character and only feels slightly dated from its origins in the late 90s.

Transmetropolitan shows Warren Ellis at his absolute best. Set in a futuristic New York City, Ellis begins with a fantastic satire of news, politics, and entertainment.Meet Spider Jerusalem. An anitsocial journalist forced out of his temporary retirement by lawyers, Spider embodies the two things we love about antiheroes, he'll fight against all the corruption and exploitation in the world, while still raging at the complacent citizens who let it go on. In this volume, he covers stories about the human-alien hybrid movement, the presidential election, television, and the new religions popping up like weeds. Ellis writes fantastic dialogue and brutal sarcasm to immerse you in these scenes. The artwork is also great, with Robertson loading the background with details and gags so that you want to read every panel twice.This looks like it's going to be one of my favorite Vertigo series.

Wit and humor = 5starspolitical savvy = 5starsSocietal Critique = 5 starsImagination = 5 starsArtwork = 10 STARSThe only problem I had with this is the main character, Spider. I thought it was too much of a hyperbolic depiction of Hunter S. Thompson set in the future. There were too many clear parallels between the famous "doctor of Journalism" and the protagonist. I couldn't help but picture Thompson doing all of these things, and the problem was that I couldn't see Thompson acting in this way (even if he was supposed to be Raoul Duke).I truly appreciated the writing whenever Spider began using his journalistic voice, but he actions and dialogue seemed off to me. I'm hoping this was an attempt at an explosive first couple of issues and that the character will simmer/settle in the subsequent volumes.All said, 10 out of 10 would recommend!

From the opening issue I remember reading hunched over my computer five years ago, the series four or more years defunct already, this has been my absolute favorite serial comic. Living in a future that is a caricature of the present, and that has only grown more gut wrenchingly accurate since these issues were first published, our hero Spider Jerusalem attacks the evils of his world with naught but keyboard, camera glasses, his lovely assistant, and a vast arsenal of mind altering chemicals. Its the kind of antics real life heroism is made of, the stuff you want your journalists out doing, and as our world's news cycle has become more and more white washed and vapid, Spider has become the only comic book hero that has any real need to exist in real life. He transcends the boundaries of the comic book as a fantasy place where fantasy people solve fantasy problems in fantasy ways, by fighting metaphors for our problems in a real way, the way real people can and should be fighting them. Takes all the lessons the medium gained from the graphic novel form and creates a serial that cuts to the bone nearly every issue.Aside from praise for the series, the volume itself arrived well bound and vibrantly printed.

This is a very interesting comic series; a lot of the issues that are discussed in this are still very relevant today (remember, this was written around 1995-1997). Trans-humanism, transient-ism, and hardcore journalism are the highlights here. I recommend it, but with one caveat: it is pretty rough. Definitely not for kids.

This is one of the best series every written, in my opinion. If you were to take the topic matter discussed throughout all 10 volumes and have it written today, it'd be no different. Granted, politics is timeless in the worst way possible, but Ellis really hit the nail on the head with his characters, setting, and overall views. A must read for fans of comic books, political commentary, and Hunter S. Thompson.
