"Fingerprints," "Blood," and "Bones and Bodies" focus on physical evidence. The last three chapters consider other types of evidence including residues and forgeries but not cybercrime. Each chapter opens with an anticipatory question. Generous side columns are filled with "Forensic Facts," explanations of forensic careers, and other miscellaneous information. Cartoon illustrations mostly fill up space and sometimes work against the text. The "Inquire & Investigate" activities that conclude each chapter are closely tied to the topic and will give readers hands-on "behind-the-scenes" experience. The instructions can get dense but are not overly technical. The most involved projects are perhaps the DNA extraction activity and the "Shoe Print Impressions." A few activities use open flames and some require readers to find their own recipes for ingredients but provide no URL suggestions. About the Author

Warren Ellis is the award-winning writer of Transmetropolitan, Planetary, The Authority, and the writer and co-creator of the graphic novel RED, which was the basis of two major motion pictures.   He is also the author of the NYT-bestselling novels Gun Machine and Crooked Little Vein.  His newest publication is the digital short-story single Dead Pig Collector, from FSG Originals. His awards and recognitions include the NUIG Literary and Debating Society’s President’s Medal for service to freedom of speech, the Eagle Awards Roll Of Honour for lifetime achievement in the field of comics & graphic novels, the Grand Prix de l’Imaginaire 2010, the Sidewise Award for Alternate History, and the International Horror Guild Award for illustrated narrative. While the second volume of Transmet lost a little of the punch the first volume had, it fails to lose it's must read status. Ellis and Robertson's sci-fi is something I can recommend for everyone.This volume makes a much more focused effort to look at the 'futuristic' elements of the setting. The first few issues explore the issues of human-tech integration, cryogenics, and cultural preservation. But after that, it shifts to exploring Spider's backstory in the last arc. There, we learn a little more about Spider's ex-wife, and what Spider was like before he went up the mountain.One thing I didn't like about this volume was how they handled Channon. I don't want to spoil it, but I hope Ellis does a better job in the future. That said, it's not enough to bring down the whole story. Spend the money, trust me.

Even though subsequent volumes in Warren Ellis and Darick Robertson's TRANSMETROPOLITAN series would surpass this very diverse collection of stories, it is still a first rate addition to the series. It is always outrageous, frequently funny, sometimes absurd, but always stimulating.There two aspects of the series that make it especially interesting to me. First, no other comic series explores the meaning of the media in general and the Fourth Estate in particular. For all his cynicism and rebelliousness, anti-hero Spider Jerusalem is a journalist who believes that reporting should strive to make the world a better place . . . or at least not quite so bad. Sometimes Spider's posing and stunts get in the way of that, but Ellis does manage to get the story back around to that conceit from time to time. Second, the series goes further than any other I know in looking at the furthest extremes of what people will do to remake and reconstruct themselves. Many writers have pointed out that ours is already a Cyborg culture. How else can you characterize someone who has an artificial hip, a pacemaker, and lasik eye surgery? Other writers, like Ray Kurzweil and Hans Moravec, have fantasized about a utopian future in which the human brain is sliced up and downloaded into a database, where one's consciousness can enjoy a virtual immortality (though personally, I just think of this as a bizarre way to die). Many of these notions are taken up and explored in the Transmet series.The two books that begin the series are good, but newcomers should keep in mind that it gets much better in subsequent volumes. So while I recommend this, I even more strongly recommend reading the volumes that follow.

"I Hate it Here." Perhaps this best sums up the personality of Spider Jerusalem, renegade reporter and cynic of the first degree. Disgusted by the world around him, he leaves the city and lives as a hermit.Years after his escape, his publisher drags him back into the city, wanting the books he was promised five years back. Needing money to live in the city, he whores himself out to The Word, a newspaper run by an old friend. These are his "adventures."Spider is brilliant, witty, and cynical. Through his eyes, Ellis gives an outlook of a bizarre future in which Aliens have landed, corporate America manages to advertise in your dreams, and reporters can write off their drug habits as a journalistic expense.This is the second collection of Transmetropolitan, following back on the streets. Reprinted are issues 4-12. Spider is both hostage and witness as events unfold. Fortunately, it's ammunition which he fires right back at the world.Spider can turn anything into an article, from the consequences of cryogenic freezing and restoration to simple Television. He visits reservations from the sensible to the logical extreme, and provides political commentary (And even rearranges their bowels). He encounters death threats and tangles with religion.Let's not beat around the bushes here. This is a comic book. Fancy words aside, it's packages exactly as Spider-Man or Batman would be. That's where the similarities end. This is not aimed at children, and probably shouldn't be read by children. There is blood, gore, nudity, and thought-provoking materialWhat we do have is Warren Ellis' own use of the medium--A twisted, often dark, and humorous look at a futuristic world. his portrayal is brilliant, steps ahead of almost every other writer in the field of comics.Brilliance in such a simplistic medium. Such a refreshing and innovative series.

I liked the first thing. Papery pulp with pictures. I immediately assumed I would hate the second part. It happens. First part is excellent... wah, wah, wah, fail from there. But like a junkie I tried the second volume of this one. ... -contented sigh- Oh yeah. It's good.

Ellis fleshed out his darkly satiric future with foglets, corrupt cops, reservations, and revival shock. The world of the City is still grim, gross,manic, and brightly lit.

Transmetropolitan took me a while to warm up to. But I finally got on board it's 'volume 11' all-the-time future. A satirization of the future based on today's trends - with a protagonists that often seems insane but other times seems like one of the only few sane people.

This is really something I could say is a Graphic Novel without smirking. I'm no veteran when it comes to comics, but I've lent it out to a few people I know that are, and they rave about it as well. It's very much like a Fear And Loathing influenced cyberpunk tale of journalism in a future that, for all its random technical advances, is still populated by people and therefore still plagued by the same kinds of problems we face today.

Not as riveting as the first volume but definitely entertaining. Its an interesting world with great plots to explore in each issue.

Spider is that dude, THIS needs to be made into a movie, so many brilliant concepts of a future Earth.

I made flight arrangements About a month ago to fly ti the Netherlands next year. This booked helped me figure out where to stay and what to do. I am already booking Hotels for next May, because many of the hotels were already booked. I the smaller town the hotels don't have a lot of rooms to begin with.

It has a map of Amsterdam attached to the back cover, a list of all the attractions, list of places you HAVE to see, should TRY to see and some that'll be worth your while.It contains points of interest in EACH city in Amsterdam, schedules of the operating times at each attraction, and recommendations of what time you should visit each attraction to avoid long lines.

Another great travel guide frim RS!The guide is accurate and up to date.Once again, RS travel guides has made our trip a little easier.

It's very well written but I made the mistake of ordering the narrated Audible version during a 10 hour road trip with my wife, and 2/3 of the book deals with death, corruption (on every law enforcement level), violence, kidnapping, assault, mugging, rape and every atrocity imaginable. I was seduced by the free audible 'sample' which seemed to focus on culture, rituals, traditions, and by the time we got half way through my wife (in the car with me) was horrified and doesn't want to come to Mexico City with me anymore. I'm sure its all true, but it was so dark, hopeless, and depressing. Would have been nice to add some happy endings for relief here and there.

It was certainly full of information and I loved the author's personal stories. But it felt like he was desperate to break the "bubble" of the idea of safe and comfortable Mexico City. Those who have visited or live here know it's not safe, and we know there is violence and degradation both here and in the rest of the country. We know its corrupt, we know there are divers seemingly insurmountable problems.. But we can also see its beauty, its lovable weirdness, its comforting chaos. There were small glimpses of the DF that I know in this book, but only very small ones, and I was very disappointed. I did, however, learn a lot about the city's political history, and while the author and his circle obviously run much more to the left than I, I appreciated getting to hear a different point of view.

A fascinating window into Mexico City politics and the impact of violence on its citizens cerca 2013-15, and a must-read for those who are traveling to Mexico City, for the insights into its civil society, neighborhoods, and the demi-monde of intellectuals and artists as well. Some of the personal tale was funny as well as tragic and/or neurotic and convoluted, like the "interior Circuit" after which this book is named.

I was expecting a sort of travel story. However, it became a riveting and well written exposition of how one's world changes when the government turns from "let's pool our money to more efficiently help us all" to seeing citizens as targets to be fleeced for individual gain. Scary! And timely!

I fell into the trance of just simple interest based on the Mr. Goldman's extensive writing skills. Before reading the book, I had very little interest in Mexico City, and had a basic belief, stated by one of the people cited in the book, that it was a super polluted massive violent mess. Instead, through Mr. Goldman, I discovered a vibrant the creative class in Mexico City that challenges the belief that Miami is the capital of Latin America. I learned about where they lived, what they were accomplishing, and the fact that their ties to Paris seemed much stronger than their ties to the United States. Mr. Goldman also vividly describes the unsavory character of the Mexican upper class. The second half of the book deals with Mr. Goldman's investigation into a kidnapping outside a club in Mexico City's most popular and generally safe club district, and the results of his investigation lead to interesting conclusions about the drug cartels, their relationship with Mexico outside its capital, and their close relationship to the Mexican government. Mr. Goldman is in love with Mexico City, and considers it his spititual and domestic base, but the reader is left with an impression that it is a City that is growing increasingly corrupt and increasingly unsafe. All in all, I found the book an incredibly readabel eye-opener about a city I had never before taken the time to explore.

Excellent book! I live in mexico and I am quite informed about the situation here but this book filled in a lot of gaps. Also some eye opening info about Jamiaca, Brazil, El Salvador and Honduras. Very well researched and readable!

I am still reading the book and having great satisfaction. I read equally English and Spanish, so when I figured out that Goldman had written it in English, I went for it. Nevertheless, given the subject, it might read even better in Spanish, if the translation is good.That said, Goildman's writing is brilliant. His language is rich and it reads without a hickup. A cover comment claims that it took a foreigner to write such a wonderful book on such an amazing, contradictory and fascinating city. But Goldman isn't really a foreigner, like many of us who have lived there for a long time. I'm emotionally tied to Mexico City, and drove around like any local. Granted, I learned to drive in S. America and only now, at my Golden Age, do I drive automatic. Other than the driving part (it's hard, granted and gotten worse), I can resonate with much of Goldman's experiences.I found it difficult to underand that when he got into #somos132 for such a long part of the book (not that it isn't an essential), there were some severe editor's oversights and that he fell for Camila Vallejo's "ravishing beauty" to the extent he did. Camila is, no doubt, an important figure in Latin America's student movements, but as in many things, they are better understood with a little more distance, time-wise.And never forget a key sentence: "If you think you understand Mexican politcs/social system/organization, it's because you are lacking information".Anyway, I believe it's an essential reading for anyone interested in Mexico. You won't regret it.

Reading through this book was a frustrating experience. After every page I wanted more... but not in a complementary way. I was left feeling like with just a bit more effort, this could have been really great book.The photos, are of course, the main event here. They're fascinating to look at, and some are quite beautiful. But the accompanying text feels like it goes out of its way to be unhelpful. It alternates between dropping unexplained, non sequitur factoids ("In the extreme corners of the stem, the best position mechanically, small collenchyma cells are visible"), and a rote listing of textbook labels ("The xylem and phloem are surrounded by a ring of parenchyma cells.").I suppose I was hoping for an pithy synopsis of each image, from an expert--a botanist, biologist, or a materials scientist--but one gets the impression that an intern was hired to copy random paragraphs from wikipedia for the accompanying text.So the words are forgettable, but who cares, the pictures are pretty, right? Except the decision was made to limit every image to half the page, leaving the other half for explanatory text (which is never more than one paragraph) and thus mostly empty! Why would you do that?!There is always a large magnification label (e.g., 1000X) but no real sense of scale is ever given. This could have been easily done with an inset image of the subject zoomed out, or with an introductory chapter giving familiar examples for scale comparison, or with measurement overlays, or any number of ways. People are really bad at conceptualizing exponential scale; just listing the magnification power isn't really sufficient.So, this makes a great coffee table book, but if you're looking for more depth, you'll need to find it elsewhere.

Really great images that leave you in awe, albeit images one could easily find on the internet. There is a description for each image, which is not always found on the images you get online, which is why I bought it. I will say though, not every image is sharp, and some even repeat on different pages at different angles, but that's because something is just difficult to image and there are further explanations in following pages.

There are not many books with microscopic images on Amazon: bearing that in mind this book would deserve an extra star, it is divided on sections each with a subject, minerals, plants, human body etc.. The frustating thing is the lack of care on the books design, each page is half blank with few big O letters on what the pic is about: more text would be welcome as pointed out by another reviewer...either this or to blow up the picture to frame the whole page, the description line would be fine on the margin.On the end the book could be half on size that would make no difference.Nice pictures though.

if you enjoy the world of the very, very small, then this book is for you. divided into chapters covering subjects as diverse as microorganisms, botanics, zoology, and the human body, and featuring magnifications from as low as 38x to as high as 12,000x and above, these photographs are stunning. beautifully colored to highlight the smallest details, each page is a journey of discovery. it is hard to believe, for example, that single celled animals can have hairlike structures, and even harder to believe that you can view these incredibly tiny features. While this book is geared toward adult audiences, children too will find many of the images captivating, especially those like the head of a mosquito, or butterfly scales.A steal at twice the price, you can't afford to pass this one up at a price of under $10.

I love this book! As a deep look at the unseen world around us, it will speak to anyone with a love of nature and science. The beauty and composition of the photos is amazing, as the are selected images and the narrative that accompany them. The layout is in 'categories'(Microorganisms, Zoology, Technology, etc), making it easy to find your favorite section -- I love the ant carrying the microchip!I work in Public Health, and this has become my 'gift of choice' for my senior staff. (I've purchased 6 copies,...so far.) It's compact size makes it much more workable than a 'Coffee Table' book, and the beauty and coloration enhancement of the photographs make it a book I also read with my 4 year old grandchild.Fifty years ago, the Walt Disney World TV program used to show clips of slow-motion droplets of liquid falling into dishes and flowers opening. If the unseen wonders of the amazing world we live in 'talk' to you, this is the book to remind you of the miracle of planet Earth.

I'm loving this book. My only complaint is that I wish there was more of it! Can't recommend it enough!

I wish there was a bit more scanning electron microscope images along with some technical details, but overall this is a solid book.The vast range of different images and the creativity makes it 4 stars. It is really neat and a few images really left me feeling humbled. Especially the picture of the Pentium IV chip. Wow.

Holy mackerel, these critters, micro-photographer, look worse than any dinosaur; absolutely fascinating; take a look at the mites who inhabit your eyebrows.

Hope is the Last to Die is the Holocaust experience of Halina Birenbaum. She was born in Warsaw, Poland and was only ten years old when the Germans invaded Poland, thus changing her life for ever. Halina and her family suffered the hell of the Warsaw Ghetto, were captured by the Germans and sent to Majdanek in 1942. Halina lost her beloved mother in Majdanek, having already lost her father in the ghetto. She was sent to be gassed at Majdanek, surviving only because that night they had run out of gas. From Majdanek, she was sent to Auschwitz , eventually surviving two more camps after Auschwitz. On January 1, 1945, she was shot by a German in the arm which became paralyzed, requiring surgery. At the end of the war, only Halina and one brother survived. I honestly don't know how Halina survived all that she did, she must have had such a strong will to live. As much as I liked this book, I felt like I was kind of left hanging with what had happened after the war. There was no mention of what happened to her paralyzed arm which needed more surgery. I do know she married and had at least two children, but I would have liked to know more about how her future worked out. That was why I gave the book four stars. Overall though, an excellent book with a very strong message about survival.

This is my second book of Halina Birenbaum. The first one is about her post-war life, first in Warsaw, then in the 'aliya movement' in different European locations and finally in Israel. To my knowledge it wasn't translated into English. "Hope is the last to die" is the author's memoir from the years of the Holocaust. Mrs. Birenbaum is a very powerful and candid writer. Reading her memoirs is like living her life with her. How could anyone survive Warsaw Ghetto and several camps is beyond me. How can one live a positive, successful and productive life after such a nightmare, is beyond me as well, despite the fact that being a daughter of two survivors, it's part of my own legacyl. This memoir is an important contribution to the history of the Holocaust. I gave it 4 stars because I expected to have recollections about more individual people and their names. But maybe being a child under unbelievable stressful and difficult conditions, erased the names from the author's memory.

I have read many books and seen many movies about the Holocaust; have visited Auswchwitz and Dachau, but I have never felt the horror of the camps as I did while reading this book. The reader is there with Ms. Birenbaum, feeling the cold, the hunger, the constant terror and rage. It is unimaginable that this woman survived 6 years of inhuman treatment--but she did.Because Ms. Birenbaum describes her own experiences as a Polish Jew coming of age during the Third Reich, she has much to teach us. The author expresses her emotions so simply and beautifully that the reader feels joy at her triumphs and while crying at her losses, emotional pain and humiliation. This remarkable woman, who was a child (between 9 and 15 years of age during the war), was wise, strong, resourceful and brave beyond all expectations. She watched almost all those she loved disappear. While standing in line at a "selection" at the Majdanek Camp, she turned around to talk to her beloved mother who had for years emotionally sheltered her young daughter from the inevitable (a la "Life is Beautiful"), and found her gone. She never saw her again, never said good-bye. In the camps she created new families for herself, only to loose these people, as well. Most touching was Ms. Birenbaum's first experience of falling in love and the loss of that man. And through all this, she was never able to mourn. Emotions had to be pushed deep inside because the focus had to be on survival.On several occasions, the author expressed her need for dignity and self-respect by standing up to her captors and, unbelieveably, was not shot for her defiance. She describes her indifference to the pain of others as a way of coping with the near certainty that she would loose them, while also expressing her longing to be touched and held and by someone.After reading this book, I think about all the little annoyances of daily living, and how meaningless they are. I wonder how many of us, in our pre-teens, could have dealt with the protracted horror of the ghetto and camps as Ms. Birenbaum did. How many of us would have had the will and fortitude to live through the experiences described in this book? Ms. Birenbaum, you were a remarkable child and are a courageous woman!

I purchased the book at a book store when leaving the camp march 2012. The person working at the store informed me that the author that wrote the book autographed the book. After touring the camps and were on our way back to Geneva I was reading the book at the airport and noticed a lady looking at me before we boarded the plane. When we boarded the plane she sat in the seat across from us. She asked me if it was a good book and told me she talked to the lady that wrote the book that day. My wife and me read the book and I have loaned it to several others to read. It is hard to believe that people were treated in such a matter and could only hope it does not happen again.I would recommend the book to anyone.Dale

I have read many books about the holocaust, but this one is special to me. After having the honor of actually meeting the author and hearing her story told first-hand (twice), I felt like I had to get her book. I did, and it changed me. Reading it was an experience which was almost too difficult for me and yet, I didn't want it to end. It is written like a story -you go through everything she goes through, you sort of relive it with her. That is why, when you finish the book, you feel like she is your best friend. I wish she was.
