I will admit that at first, I was disappointed that Turf Wars portrayed homophobia in the Avatar verse. My thought was that if this is a fictional world, why not just have homophobia not exist. But Avatar has always been about reflecting real world issues, and this comic handles those issues in a way that felt honest and close to home. It didn't feel like it was using homophobia to exploit the LGBT characters for drama. As a lesbian, I felt that I could relate deeply to the obstacles that Korra and Asami face while entering their relationship, and dealing with coming out. My girlfriend and I both come from conservative families, so it was important early on to communicate coming out boundaries with each other. When Asami hesitates toward immediately coming out to Korra's parents, this isn't portrayed as a negative thing, just that it's important for Korra and Asami to communicate about this. Another thing I loved was the look that Kya gives Korra and Asami, and how she's immediately able to recognize that they're in a relationship. I love that she becomes a support for them, and they have an LGBT mentor in their lives. That's what makes this comic special, to me. This doesn't just realistically portray an LGBT romantic relationship, it also portrays LGBT community, which I find is far rarer in media. It's virtually non-existent in children's media. The only other example I can think of is an episode of Danger & Eggs which features a pride parade. The media landscape is starved for healthy, realistic, and nuanced portrayals of LGBT couples, but what I hardly ever see is LBGT community and culture shown on top of that. I believe there is room in media for both fiction where homophobia doesn't exists, and fiction where it's portrayed with realism without exploitation. In these cases, it's important to show LGBT characters facing these struggles by finding community with each other. Connection through community is powerful. I don't know who I'd be if I didn't grow up without LGBT friends supporting me and guiding me throughout my coming out process. Seeing a comic portray that process is beautiful, and I hope that's the direction the creative world continues to go in. The art is gorgeous, and the story feels like a natural continuation of the television series. When I read the dialogue, I can hear the character's voices in my mind as if I were watching another episode. I'm excited to learn more about the Avatar universe, and watch Korra, Asami, and all the other characters continue to grow and develop with each other.

A surprisingly re-readable little book. I really look forward to part 2!WRITING: Feels like a true continuation of the show. The characters and the world are just like a Season 5, Episode 1 might have been. Mako and Bolin were great together. Korra and Asami were great together. Of the supporting characters, I was glad to see Tenzin and Lin, and a little sad not to see Varrick or Wu. (Maybe they will fit naturally into the plot somewhere in book 2 or 3 of this series? If not, that's okay. It's better for writing to make sense than to have cameos.)ART: Wow. Just the right amount of additional detail for the comic format. I love the clarity of these panels and the camera shots chosen for them. How each character feels shows in their face and body. How a fight scene unfolds can be seen--you can actually tell what the characters do when they fight. It's wonderful. (I'm a bit of a fight scene enthusiast.) Also, the spirit world was whimsical and gorgeous to behold. Nice variety of lush color palettes for each scene. The new characters have distinctive faces, and the new villain has very cool-looking weapons.

Amazing. Legend of Korra was just that...legend! And the comic is just as cool, except so much sweeter...I can't even begin to describe what it means to be able to read a comic about two incredible women who happen to love each other. It means so much. The artist who did this is absolutely fantastic, it's so beautiful. Thank you so much. My only wish is that it could be somehow made into the animated show again...I would give anything to see a canon Korrasami kiss (since they were unable to do so at the end of the show). Thank you for this though, it's incredible.

This was a great read! It felt like I was actually watching an episode of Korra while flipping through this. Michael DiMartino did a good job at making the dialougue sound like it could've been part of a Korra script.Of course the plot isn't going to be too dramatic since poor Korra already dealt with most of the worst situations ever in the show. The tone is much calmer, with much of the comic's focus being on Korra and Asami's budding relationship and a realistic conflict involving a greedy businessman wanting to turn the spirit portal into a tourist attraction. This comic is very much a suitable continuation of the show.Irene Koh's art is so beautiful!! I love how it's not the typical children's comic cartoony style. I've heard that people have actually been complaining about how it's so different from the show's original style, but I personally think it's fitting and very charming. It gives it a more mature feel.My main complaint is that it's too short. It took nearly three years after the finale for this comic to be released and it's only 80 pages! And the next part isn't going to be released until January! I guess me and other Korra fans are just going to have to stay patient for another 6 months or so.

This is a lovely continuation of the Legend of Korra series. As happy as I am to see the further exploration of Korra's and Asami's relationship it is wonderful that is it isn't being developed in a vacuum. The world is still turning and they still had to deal with the social, economic and political fall out of the final battle with Kuvira and the spirit portal. The comics for Avatar The Last Airbender never shied away from posing difficult situations as fall out from Aang's and his friends' decisions. This was a solid beginning and I'm looking forward to more.

I am so happy that the LoK team was finally able to bring this into light. They jumped through so many loopholes it seemed to just to deliver us a fantastic animation, only to now deliver us an even more fantastic comic. I've been eagerly anticipating this ever since it was announced. It's feels almost unreal to finally have this physically in my hands.I am very excited to see where Korra and Asami's journey now heads, along with the rest of the team.

I'd give this a 3.5/5, but it's incredibly well-known and well-reviewed already so I'll keep this one short. This is a very sweet, fairy tale inspired piece of shortish fiction set in the town of Wall and in Faerie. In Wall there is, well, a Wall that divides the regular world from Faerie and there's a gap in the wall here that is usually guarded. Rarely there is a market at the gap in the Wall with magical items and the townspeople mingle slightly with the inhabitants of Faerie and this fairy tale type story of seeking a falling star who turns out to be a girl, at least in Faerie, ensues.I'll just note that I "read" this by listening to it in audiobook form. The audio book for this, at least the version I listened to, is read by Neil Gaiman, the author of the book. He's an excellent narrator and it's nice to hear the book how the author envisioned it.

I have read several of Neil Gaiman's novels and I think I enjoy this book and Neverwhere the most.In every review I have made of his novels I comment on the amazing worlds that he is able to vividly birth with his writing. Nowhere, perhaps with American Gods as the only exception, is this more apparent than in Stardust.The fantastical creatures and events that are depicted in this book, are truly a pleasure to behold. The way the story is narrated in particular, makes the reader feel as if events are being guided by some higher power like fate, though it's obviously the author, and this lends itself greatly to the classical fantasy feel of the book.Its also interesting to note that this struck me as being one of the lighter fantasy worlds that Gaiman has crafted. I quite enjoyed this when juxtaposed to the London Underground of Neverwhere.I greatly enjoyed this book and its call back to the classic fairy tales of days past. I can't help but wish there was more.

I loved the movie so much that i bought this book and found that it is a much more adult fairy tale than the film. A lot was changed to adapt the book to the screen, but the overall tone was very similar. There was more sex and more blood and guts, but it was fun to read and I am glad I bought it.

I really liked this book. I guess I was ruined a bit for Neil Gaiman since I read The Ocean at the End of the Lane before any other of his works. I think about that story all the time. It still resonates with me months after I read it. This story feels similar to me. Tristan will be with me for a long time. I also agree with Neil Gain an on the power of fairy tales or myths or whatever you want to call them. A lot of them have been sanitized over the years from the original stories. Original issue fairy tales were much more grim to make a point.I do not like everything Neil Gaiman writes but the stories I do like are so profound and moving that they stick with me for quite a while. Stardust is one of those.

Magnificent story by author AND magnificent story teller, Neil Gaiman. I honestly have never fallen in love with a story like this until now. I am over the moon about it (so to speak), It is read by the author and that is a treat for the listening audience as he is delivering it in the way it was meant to be.I have listened to this in a car with others, and on my own now quite a few times because there is so much detail in the story-telling and it is pleasant to hear.I had seen the movie Stardust, related to this story it is, but never had a real interest in the movie because (I know now) of how it was portrayed. Although it has helped me visualize some scenes in the audio.Best ever story...well, what can I say...other than...this story I highly recommend for anyone with an interest in fantasy and faerie stories...it is ONEGOODSTORY!

After seeing the movie when it first came out and then buying it when it came out on DVD/BluRay and found out it was a book first, I had to get it. I wanted it in Hard Back as I am huge reader and have a large library and prefer to have them in Hardback form as they last longer. The book did not disappoint. The movie was excellent and the book is even better and am super happy w/ it.I have read several book by Neil Gaiman and this is by far one of the best if not the Best Novel he has ever written. Such a great story and for those romantics out there you will really love this book, as it shows that anyone can find love in even the most remote of places and really teach what love is, etc. Enjoy!

I love this book so much in fact that I own it in several different formats and have read and/or listened to it in all. I first got the audiobook, but sometimes you miss things while listening and I was curious have some things were spelled, so I got the kindle version as well. Then I wanted it on the bookshelf both for myself and in the hopes that one of my children will get curious and pull it down when the time is right. I highly recommend this book for anyone who needs a little magic and sparkle in their life.

Obviously it's difficult not to compare a book with the movie. There are some major differences, some good and some bad. The actual story is classic and unique, most certainly an excellent read. My biggest issue however is the lack of character development with our female lead and the fact that there is absolutely no chemistry between the two. It's a fairly straightforward story. Boy goes on journey, becomes a man, and of course he gets the girl in the end.

I was hesitant about reading this bc I typically think books about life after death or in this case, the space between, are cheezy and unbelievable. Here's what freaked me out about this one...I've had similar experiences...so similar that it's a little uncomfortable to admit. The out of body experience while still being able to see and hear everything in the room actually happened to me. Watching my own body but not being present in it, yep that happened too, as well as being limited in that my spirit was near the ceiling, unable to leave the room. The descriptions of her interactions with deceased family I've also experienced but only in dreams. I've always referred to them as visitations and assumed that since I'm alive, I can't visit them in heaven so we visit in a space between. I've actually told family members who were moments from passing to please visit me in my dreams. Oddly enough I can generally differentiate between actual visitations versus regular dreams. I felt like this book validated my own experiences in such a beautiful way that I really don't care if this was purely a work of fiction, although I seriously doubt that. Even if you've never had any such experiences it's a wonderful book that fills you with hope of what could be.

I have had it on my Kindle for awhile and decided to give it try. However, when I started reading the book, I was drawn into and knew that a box of tissue would be needed. The author shared a very interesting perspective of Heaven. In the beginning of the book, Sophie was asked if she believed in Heaven; that would lead us into the rest of the story. The story was well told, but there were parts that I had a hard time grasping. In the Bible, it says we will be reunited with our loved ones, and that we will know them, but it never tells us how we will know them, but we do know that our spirit leaves our body when we die. This has always been a pint to ponder, and the author has put an interesting spin on the whole heaven issue in a positive way.

This is the first book I have read by Julianne MacLean and I am just blown away. This heart felt story was gorgeous and poetic. It really spoke right to the soul.In this story you follow two lives. The woman who tells the story, and her estranged mother. Everything the woman thought she knew could not have been farther from the truth.All the characters are intriguing. I loved them all equally and only wished to know them more and at a deeper level. The stories made you feel every emotion I could think of and was shocking all that the same time.I highly recommend this book. It's an amazing read for any and everyone who loves, wants to be loved, or believes in fate!

I do believe this was one of the most emotional books I have read in a long time. You will need a box of tissues as you read this treasure. Not all the emotions are sad ones, however. I will not tell you about the story line I believe the synopsis does a good job of that. But, what I will tell you is this will cover a lot of the different aspects of love and soul searching. I read in another critique it would be a great book for a book club and I agree with her. So many discussions can come from this book. But enough of that.I also want to tell you about how well the story line wove about and left many twists and turns. The characters were complicated. There were some that would be difficult to say anything about as you didn't get time to really learn about them much. But the ones that you do...you want to hug and care for their hurts and others you want to ring their necks.These are the elements that I find are important to me for any story no matter the genre. To be pulled into the story and become a part of it. To disappear from my daily life and live in the world the author created. This is something that no movie could ever do for me and why I love reading and thanking the author for their gift of writing.

First of all, I picked this book because it was free. Second of all, I am a Christian and look forward to Heaven so the title intrigued me. But I have also lost a daughter (Nel Hunsaker), so that aspect of the book resonated with me. I believe in a literal Heaven and Hell and that Purgatory is a myth as the Bible doesn't speak of it. However, I realize it was mot meant to be a theology book. I enjoyed it very much and could hardly put it down! Hope you choose to read it too. To search out the Truth about Heaven, I recommend the Bible.

From the outset I was aware this was fictional writing, if not I would have been even more frustrated by the main character, Sophie, in the opening chapters.I walked a long road with a sick daughter who eventually lost the battle and I found Sophia's emotional response to her first conscious life changing event self centered. To put it mildly she annoyed me.In fact I found her mother, introduced in later chapters, a far more likeable character.The only reason that the book gets my three rather than two stars is because of the interesting take on near death experiences.I won't read the rest of the series.

Why did I get this book and audio? I must not have read the description. I never read heartbreaking despondent stories. This was the worst book for me to read. The death of her child, and then her husband had been cheating all the time her child was dying...OMG. what am I reading?Then she drowns and sees her dead child... Now it's a paranormal?“There are things you need to do, Mommy. Questions you need to ask. You can’t be done yet. You need to forgive someone.”We jump to Cora's story... I was confused, but I stuck it out and it did all come together in the end.“Well, after all of this—losing my daughter, my husband, crashing my car and dying—I can’t imagine what else could be worse. Surely things can only get better from here.”My biggest gripe with this story is Kirk. Big hole in the story. The author spent so much time writing Cora's story she had no more room for the new love of Sophie 's life. Okay read.

I bought this for a gift but read it myself We could identify with so many of his travels. We had been to the lion walk where he was bitten.It was great to reminisce. For me, it was so wonderful to relate to a person who grew up not far far from where I lived as a child.
