Nice cover and nice paper and good font. That deserves two stars. However, almost all of the reviews are misleading if you think they are talking about this book. Amazon is applying reviews in batch to the story, not to any particular edition. Beware. This edition, with this cover and with "The Discovery of the Great" at the top, is bogus. The closest you come to identifying the publisher is in the back: "Made in the USA San Bernardino, CA 26 February 2018". It will be printed just for you, most likely from text that was originally on standard 8 1/2" by 11". When sent to the printer and printed on 6" x 9" paper stock, most all the lines wrap so you get some short lines and some long - a complete mess! This printer did not even bother to define the right paper size. Also did not bother to print page numbers or anything beyond the Mark Twain text.

Alot of the complaints in the reviews about this book are that "It is too slow", and "It is too difficult to read." Guess what! This is not The Hunger Games or The Twilight Series. This is actual literature from over 100 years ago. Yes it takes work to get through the dialogue. It is not exactly a page turner in that regard. But if you can be patient, and "get into the groove' of the dialect, then you will soon be able to read through the conversation with less effort. It is rewarding! Of course, I am reading this as an adult, and because I chose to do so, and not for a homework assignment. I am glad I took the time to do so, because this to me is what literature is all about. It's rewarding - not just a book you cruise through in two days, and then give it to your 10 year old who also reads it in two days. There is a lot of social commentary, as well as commentary about the inherent decency of man, and what we do to screw up our kids along the way. Critics are correct, this is not a children's book. It just happens to be about a child. Mark Twain was a masterful writer. I hope you take the time to work through this book. Also, the Dover Thrift version does not appear to be censored - as some of the other books are purported to be.

We bought this book for my childâ€™s 7th grade summer reading. For this, annotation is required including underlining. The printing on this book is so so small that I literally gasped when I opened the book. This book should be 3-4 times as thick but theyâ€™ve condensed the font size so much to save pages that it is useless to a student. I have 20/20 vision and would struggle. I want my money back but am not going to bother sending it back because it would cost me as much postage as I paid for the â€œbook.â€ The text size is what Iâ€™m guessing to be 5 pt font. Itâ€™s shocking!!!! We are headed to Barnes and Noble to get something we can actually use for school.

I wanted to re-read this due to the discussions of removing it from school libraries and required reading lists related the use of a certain word. I read this in the fifth grade, and at that time, it was simply a great adventure of two boys . Now, over 50+ years later I see it in an entirely different light. It is not just an adventure of two boys... but also a social and political commentary on slavery. Now I truly appreciate the significance and genius of Mark Twain. It is a part of our history that we need to study and learn from. Like the Holocaust...we should never forget.

The history of paleontology, as it is usually seen, starts with the work of French naturalist Georges Cuvier some 200 years ago. Mayor, a classical folklorist, moves the date back to the time of the ancient Greeks and Romans. "The ancients collected, measured, displayed, and pondered the bones of extinct beasts," she writes, "and they recorded their discoveries and imaginative interpretations of the fossil remains in numerous writings that survive today." Among the beasts whose bones they pondered were giant giraffes, mammoths and mastodons. Mayor also proposes that the griffin of classical folklore, described in the legends as having the body of a lion and the beak of an eagle, "was based on illiterate nomads' observations of dinosaur skeletons in the deserts of Central Asia." And she tells of purely imaginary creatures of the classical period, such as the triton and the centaur. But her focus is on what the ancients made of the bones of real animals. Advances in classical studies and paleontology, she says, "now make it possible to restore the ancient fossil investigations to their rightful place in the history of science." There was a TV documentary based on this book, which I found fascinating. I looked for the book, a textbook admittedly, and was happy to find it here. The author documents ancient references to fossils and includes extensive notes and appendices. These references are especially convincing in support of her ideas.The fun part is that the ancients clearly recognized the bones as having come from a previous time and viewed them as possibly the bones of giants and heroes, quickly rearranging an elephant's bones into the remains of a giant man (with one eye). Voila! a cyclops. Recommended.

This book presents the idea that ancients were well aware of fossils, and discusses their interpretations of them. It shows how different members of society tried to interpret them in different ways (most interpreted them as being signs of giants and monsters, but some took this to show divine origins, and others took it to be part of natural history). The ideas are very interesting, and the history of the importance of different fossilized bones in different cities is quite exciting. My only complaint is that the books seems to be quite repetitive. Not only are the points that the author is trying to make repetitive, but she even repeats some of the stories she tells several times. A good editor could have trimmed out 1/3 of the book. All in all, a good book. Interesting, thorough, and decently referenced. For anyone interested in classics or paleontology, this is a good buy.

At first very excited. Too much repetition and found some appelations peculiar. Would like to have seen some classics scholars consulted.And not one American paleontologist cited - unless I just mised it. Not much talk about migration theories. the ancient Greeks understood even more than she gives them credit for - check out myths as well as legends - there's a reason for myth.

.I enjoyed Mayor's theorizing and speculation in "First Fossil Hunters." Examining ancient myths as the way in which ancient peoples gave context to the enormous prehistoric bones and skeletons they encountered is a fascinating concept.The chapters on griffins and on elephants are quite good. These are thought-provoking essays which make a lot of sense. Appendix Two is interesting and useful, with many quotes from ancient historians and story tellers referencing giants and mythological beasts. I hope to read many of the books listed in the "works cited" section of this volume.Like Mayor's book on Native American fossils and legends, this book would benefit from more careful editing. So they put them in temples.And spun yarns about them. It should not have been surprising that, once someone thought to ransack the ancient world for evidence, so much of it remains. We have already seen, in other fields, how much can be reconstructed from even the scraps of inscriptions that have been accumulated so assiduously by, for the most part, German philologists. And we already knew that the Greeks, above all other premodern people, asked questions about what they found in the world around them.It is a bit of a surprise, if Adrienne Mayor is correct, that the model of the griffin should be dinosaur fossils found as far away as Central Asia. That was a very, very long way from Greece. Less surprising, perhaps, that fake fossils were also in evidence.Probably none of the fossils collected so long ago remains, but Adrienne Mayor finds a few representations of them. The most convincing is a skull painted on a vase.Her treatment is very complete, with an appendix of apparent references to fossils in old texts, such as a passing reference in Cicero to theft of fossils from a temple.There is room for much speculation in this scrappy material, and Mayor makes the most of it.Altogether, 'The First Fossil Hunters' is a clever, entertaining, imaginative and curious book.

I am already a fan of the South Beach Diet and Dr Agatston's books, including The South Beach Diet Supercharged, because they helped me change my "diet" mentality and "couch potato" existence into an active lifestyle and a 65 lb. weight loss! I appreciate that he makes complicated subjects understandable and always provides a game plan. I was lucky to obtain an advance copy of The South Beach Wake-Up Call and was blown away by Dr. Agatston's ability to wake me up once again!With his new book Dr. Agatston provides a call to action that can truly change the way Americans think about their lifestyle choices and how those choices can impact their health. This is not a "diet" book, although it does re-state many of the South Beach Diet principles. It is a book that challenges the trade-off that many Americans have accepted: Our fast-food, sedentary way of life has contributed to two-thirds of American adults being overweight or obese and childhood obesity tripling in recent years. This is not a small problem considering the link between obesity and diabetes and other life-threatening diseases. The impact that these epidemics will have on our health-care system is enormous. Already our children are developing health problems not normally seen until individuals are in there 50s. That is scary stuff !Now don't panic, it is not all bad news. Dr. Agatston provides 7 major strategies to help us remold our lives for the better (and it doesn't all have to be all at once). For example, there is a chapter that talks about sitting down to home-cooked meals and enjoying food and family. We just started this last Sunday, when I made breakfast for everyone at home. We ended up sitting at the table for hours munching on my homemade waffles (from The South Beach Quick & Easy Cookbook) and eating our turkey bacon and fresh fruit!If you had asked me beforehand whether I had the time to do this, I probably would have said "No." But after being reminded of the benefits of the family dining table, we've decided to have these gatherings every week. We even have a "no paper zone" dining table declared so we always have our table ready.I had to laugh when I saw the strategy on de-cluttering your home. I have wanted to do this for years and have never been successful! Now I feel my family has the tools to get started. Dr. Agatston's chapter reminded me of how much energy is put into dealing with the clutter and how it can create a toxic environment in your life. We started to walk around, as a family, and take notes of what needs to be done. The plan is to tackle just one room every week. The nice thing about this is I can get out of being the "bad" guy because now it is Dr. Agatston who is saying: "clean up this mess." And as he also says, outward clutter is often a symptom of inner clutter, or emotional turmoil, and that is often what is preventing us from moving forward in so many aspects of our lives!While I already have many of the South Beach cookbooks, this one takes known superfoods and creates new recipes that give you a "one-two" punch for your money. What a fun and smart idea.The South Beach Wake Up Call is definitely a marvelous read, sprinkled with interviews from leading experts in areas like childhood obesity and sleep, and with successful dieters, Super Moms, and patients of Dr. Agatston's cardiology practice. The book helps us to understand the history of how we got into such a sorry state with our health and how we can change it. Perhaps the book's greatest contribution, however, is that it acts as a catalyst for bringing this important wake-up discussion forward with our families, our politicians, and our communities.

This book is a breath of fresh air. There are plenty of lose weight fast schemes, but no one mentions changing one's lifestyle. In our culture, it is always the quick fix that sells. I have lived in another country where people ate well but we're also active. I rarely ever saw an obese person. They regularly consumed sweet snacks and thick sauces in moderation. They didn't sit in front of the TV. They made time for physical activities. They didn't sit a lot.Dr. Agitation explains how our lifestyle is making us sick. Then he gives us seven strategies to change our lifestyle for the better. I gave this book five stars, because the book is well-written, resourceful, and true. Like his other books, this one gives the reader practical information about how to become healthier. He includes recipes and resources to make the changes that each individual and or family needs to make to become healthier, not just to lose weight. Most of us were not meant to survive on pharmaceutical products and their side effects. Preventive care is key, but some conditions can be reversed. And we get to eat! Be the first to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Be a leader. Read this book. Read it!

Other strategies deal with food and exercise, meal planning, and the importance of sharing family time at meals.This is a Wake-Up Call I needed to read. Following its recommendations will help me improve my health and my wellbeing. It can do the same for you.

I am a physician who recently started working for a managed care organization. While I had some previous experience in managed care, I needed to have a fundamental tool to help me with areas I was not familiar with. This book fits that description entirely. It is an outstanding book which is designed for both and novice and intermediate level and I would highly recommend it.One of the nice things about this book is that the chapters themselves are self-contained; in other words, you can choose to read the individual chapters in whatever order you like, without reference to the prior chapters. There are sections in which it makes logical sense to read them in a specific order, but this is not an absolute.If you want to learn about managed care, brush up on what you know, or improve your baseline knowledge, I think that this book is for you. It's well-written, well-researched, and easy to read. A very worthy investment.

It feels like the authors of this book were paid by the word. Chapters have irrelevant sections and sections have unnecessary details. Some examples:-The section on member services describes a call center, including that call centers typically have cubicles with low walls to foster teamwork, an apparently critical detail for students of the healthcare system.-"24 hours per day, 7 days per week (referred to as 24/7)" for those who've never heard the term "24/7"-A section describing a system that used to be separate but has since been combined, followed by a description of how the two used to work when separate, "for clarity". I don't remember if the book even describes how it works now that it's combined.-List after list that include failed systems and ideas or outdated terminology. In some cases knowing what hasn't worked is useful, but mostly it's just clutter that detracts from the important points.-Lists of "keys" to success that include more than a dozen items, with questionable items such as "compassion"Yes, the book is comprehesive; however, the unnecessary detail clouds key points and bores the reader. This book could easily be cut in half without losing any critical information.

I'm a healthcare administration and management student and this is a really great resource even after the class was complete. I have found myself going to this book for references for my other courses. If you want to have a great managed care resource, this is your book. I first rented this book and bought it afterwards because I found it so useful.

I have been in Operational Risk for a few years, so this re-affirmed what I had already been told, but did not really shed any new light on Operational risk management for me. This would have been more useful if I read it 3 years ago.

This rich, variegated biography (Monk's second and final volume after The Spirit of Solitude, 1872-1921) starts off on a happy note for Russell, with his second marriage (of four) and the longed-for birth of a son. Unfortunately, from that point on, things only go downhill for him emotionally. Throughout his life, Russell (1873-1970) felt that he might go insane. He believed very much in romantic love but was apparently incapable of truly loving anyone. This emotional insecurity led him to multiple liaisons outside of his marriages (at the age of 64, his third marriage was to a 20-year-old) and strained relationships with his two children. Particularly upsetting to Russell was the homosexuality of his son, since he was on record as saying that homosexuality was the consequence of bad parenting. These domestic problems aside, Monk does a marvelous job of covering the highlights of the last half of Russell's long life: his Nobel prize in literature, the Russell-Einstein Manifesto against nuclear proliferation, his imprisonment for antinuclear protests, his social and political philosophy, and his contributions to logic and analytic philosophy. Russell was best by the paradox of believing that his colossal work effort and production in philosophy and in the philosophy of mathematics was fruitless while others found it to be the work of a genius. Simultaneously, he also believed that his prolific work output in journalism (politics, education, morality, sex and society) to be of great importance while others found it to be utterly trivial and fruitless. Add to this, Russell won the Nobel Prize not for his original and profound contribution to philosophical thought, e.g., 'The Principles of Mathematics', 'On Denoting' or even 'Principia Mathematica' but for his later popular works that other philosophers regarded as unimportant and even inferior.Retreat & Retrenchment:Russellâ€™s retreat from the reality of the world of eternal truths to be found in philosophy, mathematics and logic necessitated a retreat from the realm of the gods to the quotidian world of lesser mortals with their trivial political and social problems which, after breathing the rarefied air of the gods, he was less able to contend. The best years of his life were spent searching for certain knowledge in the realm of mathematics and logic. A search that resulted in paradox and perplexity. After the retreat from Pythagoras, Russelâ€™s task now was to lure back the gods. But he found that the world of the gods does not exist and that he would have to find his way through the darkness of the human made world. He found that the human made social, political, economic world was one subjectivity and caprice. He then moved to the realm of science as the only reliable path to certain knowledge only to find that the most advanced thinking in physics undermined the possibility of certain knowledge, this too only cast the paw of uncertainty on absolute reality. This brought about a decisive change in his conception of himself. He became a man with no country so to speak, beyond philosophy, a misfit in politics, a dabbler in physics but all the while a humanitarian with eternal insights into the human condition. Ever ambivalent, he became a suitably cynical and a detached skeptical onlooker, his course of moderation between the vices of the extremes left him isolated and alone, so much for the lot of the reasonable person in unreasonable times within a world uncertain, save for the madness. At last, he found his way back to the eternal â€˜Spirit of Solitudeâ€™.Analytical? Philosophy:The error in analytical philosophy that Russell is credited with pioneering is to see philosophy as a source of knowledge. Knowledge, not meaning, was Russelâ€™s primary philosophical concern. In any case, knowledge is not exhaustive of the human experience. Philosophy is not a science, it is much closer to the arts and literature. The wisdom and wonder represented by philosophy are always just out of reach, and this longing is the missing part of the human experience not accounted for with knowledge. Unfortunately, the history of philosophy, after Socrates, has been one of attempting to reduce philosophy to a search for knowledge. First to theological knowledge, then to transcendental knowledge, then to the scientific or mathematical kind of knowledge culminating with the entire discipline of analytical philosophy, as initiated by Russell, which sees itself as sort of science. This is a mistaken conception of what philosophy is and one that Russell could not overcome.Russell, the Un-modern Modern:Russell was exceedingly modern at a time when what it meant to be modern was changing. He thought the problems of the world could be solved with the simple application of rational policies. In this, he overestimated the human capacity for reason. Russell had a trust in modernity and progress that we no longer have and this makes Russell look less and modern to us than he did in his own time. We no longer have a faith in modernity or that progress, any kind of progress, can solve, resolve or dissolve any of our problems. Progress is uneven and always promises more than it delivers.Rejection of modernity and progress is now the most modern (post modern) and progressive perspective, this is what Russell did not see or foresee. He never stopped believing that reason and rationally were self-evident and axiomatic. That was the one axiom that he never thought to be in need of a rigorous proof. We have lost the faith that we can solve our problems rationally and perhaps for very good reason. We have seen how the tools of reason and rationality, science and industry, can threaten our very survival and the inhabitability of the planet. The losing of faith in modernity is the most modern of sensibilities.Unrelated Note:Unrelated, I have read many of the negative reviews and it seems to me that many of these reviewers were looking a hagiography rather than a biography. Ray Monk is to be congratulated on his thorough and authoritative treatment of Russell without falling into the trap of writing a hagiography as many chroniclers do. This book, along with volume 1, comprise what is simply a superb biography. I believe that most of the critical reviews on this point can be disregarded.

Having read "Wittgenstein", then vol 1 of this biography, this was a natural and exciting follower. I certainly have to wonder what connection there is to a life associated, at least ab initio, with mathematics and failure in one's personal life. Considering the connection between logic, mathematics, and reasoning, and our need for success with those to be successful in one's life in general, this certainly brings up an issue of a golden mean between extremes. It perhaps also brings up an issue of autism and the genetic predisposition to autism as a range of autism might on one hand lead to outstanding mathematical accomplishment accompanied by outstanding social failure.It is such a shame that such a great mind would give up such important work for lack of - self discipline? Self control? A family madness? Most telling I thought was the quote given in response to the question "Why did you give up philosophy?" Since his response is shocking but stabs to the heart of the personal difficulties experienced by BR and successfully passed on to almost all of his children and grandchildren one has to wonder was this nurture or nature. A clue seems to be the success of those who had the earliest and longest break in contact. The less contact the more success?Perhaps an errata sheet should be made available regarding the apparent deleted words. One sentence especially seemed to need "not" to make sense in context, but in general I found my reading to be abruptly halted with the awareness of a word missing - in a context where I could know precisely what word would have been right. I half wonder if RM was using a new word processor or something? I did not notice this at all with vol. 1.Regardless, of all the things worth reading this will always be high on my recommend list. Great philosophers are easier to understand when we know as much as we can about them as persons. Thanks Ray! Eternally grateful.

The negative reviews of this monumental bio are themselves unfair. I understand the reverence for Russell that arises from his brilliance as a philosopher and his status as an antiwar/antinuclear icon. But Monk gives credit where credit is due, and one is left at the end of the book with a deep sadness about all of the tragedies he suffered, even those that he can be said to have inflicted on himself.To the extent that Russell is made to look mean-spirited, frivolous or incoherent, those are conclusions justly to be drawn largely from his own pen and his speeches. Just a few things: While Hitler was preparing for war, Russell advocated unilateral disarmament by Britain, on the theory that, like a dog chasing a car that stops dead in the road, Hitler would lose his aggressive impulses if no one else had weapons. And in the aftermath of WWII, he argued that the US should threaten the USSR with nuclear annihilation unless it agreed to come under the yoke of a world government run by the United States! He said publicly that John F. Kennedy was more evil than Hitler or Stalin. He took credit for defusing the Cuban Missile Crisis, when it appears that he played a trivial role in the resolution if any. When his children were young he believed that by applying strictly behaviorist principles he could turn them into perfect adults. He refused to have any direct contact with his ex-wife Dora for decades, to the detriment of his children and grandchildren. When his son sank into mental illness, he cut him off emotionally, and then did the same thing to his granddaughter Lucy at the very end of his life. (She killed herself by setting herself afire in a village cemetery five years later.)This is all well documented. It is not a fantasy constructed by someone "out to get" the man. If we have to revise our simple picture of the aged, aristocratic warrior against evil in the world, so be it.

These stories are now in the public domain, and they seem to have been printed right off the computer screen. Or from a typewriter. (Does anyone use a typewriter anymore? But that's what it looks like.) A very cheaply made edition and very hard to read. Takes half the fun out of it. Buy another version, even if you have to pay a dollar or two more. You'll be glad you did.

I read Wodehouse when the insomnia takes over each night, usually starting between 2 and 3 am. Usually settles my mind within 20 minutes or so. Puts the world right as rain, settles the soul, calms the heart, and I can sleep again. Happy times, problems solved. P. S. My next robot will be a Jeeves.

Someone once said that criticising PGWodehouse was like taking a spade to a souffle. That about sums it up. People from George Will to Christopher Hitchens love him.

It's Bertie at his best once again. Jeeves is not as much in evidence as in some of Bertie's adventures, but Jeeves shimmers in to save the day each time, as always. This is another delightful Wooster romp.

Classic Jeeves & Wooster stories. All loosely tie together but can also stand in their own. Not a bad place to start for someone getting introduced to the Wodehouse Universe.

These Jeeves and Bertie Wooster stories are a delight. Whenever Bertie gets himself into trouble, Jeeves is always there to straighten things out. From troublesome younger cousins of Bertie's to Bertie's Aunts to forceful young women who want to form Bertie before and after marriage, Jeeves smoothly helps Bertie escape all traps. Jeeves and Bertie may not always agree on haberdashery, but in the end the young master's life returns to tranquility thanks to his faithful butler and valet.Bertie's antics and Jeeves' sang froid can brighten the greyest day.A friend from work introduced me to the works of P.G. Wodehouse several years ago. I have enjoyed them ever since.Once a person discovers what fun there is in reading about Jeeves and Bertie, I recommend moving on to the Blandings Castle and Psmith stories.

As James Taylor would say, when you're down and troubled, Wodehouse will pick you up. He's THE master of comic prose in the English language, and his books were never timely, so they are still timeless. He was writing about a world that probably never existed, but if it did, it's long gone now. And that only adds to the charm. Yes, he was a fool during World War II, but surely we can forget that stupidity since we won the war, last time I checked, over 65 years ago? Time to forgive, since PG brings so much pleasure to those who need a pick-me-up at the end of a long day of honest toil, and don't want to hit the bottle -- at least not too early in the evening.
