This brings together a lot of the material from his website but with a much more approachable organization.I am not coming from an MS Office background but that hasn't made the book less valuable. The examples are down to earth practical and embody real world useful solutions.In short can strongly recommend this book. It will be interesting to see where Google takes GAS.One way to think about GAS that is not entirely obvious is that it's an entire ecosystem for JavaScript server side development and deployment available to all with a gmail address. Business users on a paid domain account have higher quotas and a domain tools added.

I've been using this book for almost a year now and regularly reference it when working on Apps Script projects. It begins with an introduction to the javascript language and then a comprehensive look at the world of apps script and its uses across the Google ecosystem. You'll be surprised how much you can do with apps script and how many services it integrates with.I was a VBA user many yeas ago and this book does a great job at helping developers transition from the VBA world to the apps script world. Hays further explains that he has attempted to present a readable, modern translation of Marcus' great work which still captures the "patchwork character of the original." I find that Hays's translation succeeds. He translates Marcus's reflections into a colloquial, frequently earthy, English in unstilted language and idiom that will be familiar to a modern reader. I think the translation is as well faithful to Marcus's thought. The reflective, meditative character of the paragraphs come through well, as does the difficulty of the text in many places. This is a book that will encourage the modern reader to approach Marcus -- an altogether commendable result.Professor Hays has written an excellent introduction to his translation which can be read with benefit by those coming to the "Meditations" for the first time and by those familiar with the work. There is a brief discussion of Marcus's life, his philosophical studies, and his tenure as emperor of Rome (161-180 A.D.) Hays spends more time on the philosophical background of Marcus's thought emphasizing ancient stoicism and of the philosophy of Heraclitus. He discusses the concept of "logos", a critical term for Marcus and for later thought, and argues that logos -- or the common reason that pervades man and the universe -- is as much a process as it is a substance. This is difficult, but insightful.Hays obviously has a great love for Marcus's book. He is able to offer critical observations which will help the reader focus in studying the Meditations. (For example, Hays argues that Marcus does not fully understand or appreciate human joy. He also argues that Marcus's thought takes an overly static view of the nature of society and does not see the possibility or need for societal change.)Hays discusses briefly the reception of the Meditations over the centuries. I enjoyed in particular his comments on essays by Arnold and Brodsky on Marcus Aurelius.The Meditations is one of the great book of the West and will repay repeated readings. When I read it this time, I was struck by Marcus's devotion to his duties in life as the Roman emperor. I got the distinct impression that Marcus would have rather been at his studies but kept telling himself, in his writings, that he had to persevere and be the person he was meant to be. It is a focused approach, to say the least, to the duties to which one was called.I was also impressed with the similarities at certain points between Marcus's thought and Buddhism. Other reviewers have also noted this similarity. Marcus talks repeatedly about the changing, impermanent character of human life and about the pervasive character of human suffering. He talks about controlling and ending suffering by understanding its causes and then changing one's life accordingly. There is a need to learn patience and to control anger and desire. More specifically, Marcus' understanding of perception and how it leads to desire and can be controlled by reason (discussed well in Hays's introduction.) is very Buddhist in tone. I have become interested in Buddhism and was struck in this reading of the Meditations by the parallels it offers to Buddhist thought.There is a wonderful paragraph in the Meditations where Marcus urges himself to persevere and not to lose hope simply because he did not become a scholar or a hero or the person of his dreams. What matters is being a good person and living in harmony with one's nature. This passage spoke clearly and poignantly to me as I reread the Meditations. Undoubtedly, the reader will find passages in this book that are addressed clearly to him or her.This is a book that should be read and pondered many times. Hays and the Modern Library have done readers a service with this translation.Robin Friedman

In this case, the Hays translation is the hardcover, while the authors who translated the paperback and Kindle versions aren't specified. I am sincerely pissed that I was not provided a copy of this as a kid growing up. I have devised a work around to the whole "Not growing up with a father figure" issue. I have decided that Marcus Aurealis is my actual father, and Socrates is my great uncle and Thales is my grand father. I realize this sounds nutty to read but I honestly feel more in common with these thinkers then the absent XY chromosome donor.

I don't know who did the translation for this one but I found it very difficult to follow. This prompted me to look around and I found another translation by George Long (Thoughts of Marcus Aurelius Antoninus 1862). Even though it's not a recent translation, Long's version is often easier to understand. Compare the translations of the first paragraph for example:This version:Of my grandfather Verus I have learned to be gentle and meek, and to refrain from all anger and passion. From the fame and memory of him that begot me I have learned both shamefastness and manlike behaviour. Of my mother I have learned to be religious, and bountiful; and to forbear, not only to do, but to intend any evil; to content myself with a spare diet, and to fly all such excess as is incidental to great wealth. Of my great-grandfather, both to frequent public schools and auditories, and to get me good and able teachers at home; and that I ought not to think much, if upon such occasions, I were at excessive charges.George Long's version:From my grandfather Verus I learned good morals and the government of my temper. From the reputation and remembrance of my father, modesty and a manly character. From my mother, piety and beneficence, and abstinence, not only from evil deeds, but even from evil thoughts; and further, simplicity in my way of living, far removed from the habits of the rich. From my great-grandfather, not to have frequented public schools, and to have had good teachers at home, and to know that on such things a man should spend liberally.Having said this however, it's still worth comparing both translations which are free on the Kindle.

This is quite possibly the most insightful, existential book I've ever read. Emperor Aurelius has given us wisdom in its purest form. This should be a manual for every human's life. Every sentence is mind-numbingly profound. This book is so good, that I might just have the entire text tattooed on my body. I cannot stress enough that the sagacity of this book is beyond what I have ever read. Definitely a must-read and a must-live-by.

My daughter loves Magic School bus and the body. I thought this would be perfect for her. It is too difficult, way too many words, and images aren't interesting enough to capture her attention. She is only preschool aged though. Maybe in a few years she will enjoy it. (She loves other body books for older kids, just not this one)

Magic School Bus books are our go to for instant research on tons of topics! We recently re-purchased the Human Body book because our other copy had taken a beating. Mrs. Frizzle will take your children on wild ride through Arthur's mouth and out through his nose hitting all the major body systems in between! Perfect for a cool story but it also contain facts in the margin that your child working on a bigger project can use!

My kids are long since "kids" so I like to check out the suggested age group of a book bc I'm out of practice. I do not think this book is a good book for 6 yrs olds, the suggested age listed is 6-8. If your child is on the younger end of the scale, you certainly will need to be read most of this to them, and there are way too many 'busy' side boxes of info that would not be easy for a child to focus on. Bc of all the sidebar info, I felt this was best for a child on the upper end of the age scale, even above age 8. So don't be afraid to buy this for a child over 8 yrs old. I wanted this for my soon-to-be 10 yr old grandson, needed a book about a topic he liked (undersea) and was easy to pack and ship abroad. This is physically a very skinny book, but that's what I hoped for. It's what's inside that matters.

Bought for my six year old who loves the show (both old and new). I was so excited when a friend reminded me that there are Magic school Bus books! My son loves the episode based on this book and it was one of my favorites goriwnhrg up so getting to read it is amazing! Science is without a doubt his favorite subject so to get to explore it in such a fun way is so much fun for story time. I bought 4 of these and will be finding more for Christmas!

This series has a lot of side details everywhere to help satisfy your kid's curiosity and give you ideas on related topics to cover. After reading this we watched the episodes of the old series related to digestion and even played pretend that we were going through the body on the magic school bus as well. I think my son learned a lot from this.

I never liked the idea of reading off a "computer" or not having pages to flip.....bit this Kindle changed the game around. I have all of my books at my fingers....anytime. Bed time stories for the kids, Bible, work publications, books, oh and you can email any type of document to the "kindle" email that sends directly to it and it will automatically convert it to read on your Ki dle. If you don't have one of these you are missing out.

I like using with my pediatric patients for reading material during Epsom salt soaks in the med room. Simple enough to be easily understood, accurate enough to be helpful. Gotta Love Magic School Bus!

I haven't made any of the projects yet, but I love the choices and already have a list of what to make next! This is very much a liberal-craftivist book, but I think that's a great thing and some of the quotes are so inspiring. I particularly love the 'nevertheless she persisted' and 'strong women: may we know them, may we be them, may we raise them' designs. I'm making the latter for a friend of mine who just had a little girl as my very first pick from the book. While most of the projects are pretty standard and expected (feminist/political quote with a pretty floral border), there are several unexpected standouts that are more interesting, including my favorite - a really detailed portrait style Rosie the Riveter I plan to make once I get a little more experience in cross-stitching!

Comprehensive writing and instructions on cross stitching, from getting started on a project to framing the finished piece. Ms. Rohr offers lots of helpful tips in the opening and closing chapters of the book. The 40 patterns she has created hold true to the aesthetic that she has upheld in her Etsy shop over the years. They are fun and thoughtful pieces covering a wide range of ideas and feminist expression. Everyone will find something to love about this book and the pieces to be created, whether a person new to the art form of cross stitching or a seasoned stitcher.

I love it! It's fantastic & a great deal to get all these patterns for this price. The patterns are clear & easy to read. I love this artist, I love her on instagram & etsy, & I've been really excited about this book.

I will be creating dozens of gifts based off the patterns in this book. Some are funny, some are inspiring, all are necessary.

I LOVE this book. I had so much trouble picking a pattern to do first! My favorite part is that the designs are a modern twist on classic patterns. The fonts and borders feel vintage even though the sayings are more contemporary. The "how-to" section is helpful too. I'm self taught and have been pretty much winging it for 6 years, so I looked it over before starting to make sure I was doing it right. Stephanie's instructions are very clear and concise. Can't wait to get back to stitching tonight!

Would like to have seen a few more ways to use oils and not so much history of aromatherapy. Looking for more of a reference on what oils to use for dogs and strength to use.

This is an excellent resource for beginners. It covers all important aspects of starting/learning to use EO with animals SAFELY. I especially like the thorough teachings about the importance of buying/using high quality ingredients. It has basic "recipes" for use with animals. Instructions are easy/thorough. I think too many pages were devoted to other professional's experiences.(But that is useful for ppl who are skeptical about EO.). It does not have an index and too many pages of sources to buy from (eventually those sources become outdated). That's the main reason I gave it 4 out of 5 *. Because of the "filler" pages of resources that could be found online searching anyway.

This book fell very short of what I had bought it for. I was looking for information on birds, most of the information in this book is for dogs. I will do further research on what I am looking for.

I am relatively new to essential oils especially with respect to pets. A friend had given me one page from this book as to what not to use! I located the book on amazon ordered it and have already referred this book to others. this book has helped me help my elderly Great Dane who has arthritis etc. The language is clear and the rationale provided for what to use and how to use I find very helpful. Additional reference material is also a plue. I keep this book handy with my other people and pet remedy information. I would read more from this author!

A wonderful book that contains pretty much all you need to know to work with essential oils and applications/uses on animals. (You could also use some of the recipes for humans too!) Well written and researched. Easy to read and put knowledge into application. I highly recommend this for student of Aromatherapy.
