About the Author
Michael A. Dirr, professor emeritus, horticulture, University of Georgia, is widely acknowledged as one of the leading experts on trees and shrubs for landscapes and gardens. He holds BS and MS degrees in horticulture from The Ohio State University and the Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts. Dirr has introduced over 200 woody plants to cultivation and holds 29 patents with the UGA Research Foundation. With two partners, he established Plant Introductions, Inc., a breeding and introduction company in 2006, selling it to Bailey Nurseries in 2015. Dirr continues to work in lockstep with the American nursery industry to introduce and promote new trees and shrubs.

Wanting to start a nursery next year and purchased several books for information on growing all sorts of plants. This book is a great reference on the propagation of almost any plant. Am sure I will use it often.
M. Dirr's books are a MUST in my greenhouses. This book is primarily text with some line drawn examples. It is arranged in alphabetical order based on the Latin names of plants. There is a cross reference in the back for common names. For each plant included he describes in great detail:--what different modes of propagation were attempted-- what percentage of results were achieved for each mode (cutting, seed, tissue culture, etc.)-- details for what method should be used for seed-- What IBU rooting hormone was best-- what time of year the propagation was done-- what climate region the specimen was propagated in-- what part of the plant to do tissue culture from-- graftingI am still working my way through this book as I have not read it from cover to cover. It has been a great reference for propagating at my nursery. It is great support material for my customers also. When someone comes in and says "I want to get some starts off my Grandmother's [insert plant here] before the house sells. Please Help." I can flip to the section of the book that describes all the ways to help, and find the one best suited to my customer and the time of year it is.This will not go in depth on every available rootstock for apple trees or grapes or roses...for that you will need a more specialized book that focuses strictly on the species. But as a general reference guide this is AWESOME!
This book has a tremendous amount of useful information. Some parts are a bit technical but that is necessary to understand the material presented. I like the part on rooting hormones because it goes into a lot of detail. I like how it gives separate detailed information for each species. It is obvious that this information comes from actual experience. Much of the information here is not readily available from any other source. Those who are disappointed with this book fail to realize that in the field of horticulture no one book is going to give you all the information you need. In fact you are really interested in plants you need a personal library of books. Even then you are not going to find everything in a book. Living organisms are tricky and there is always something new to be learned. All in all the authors did an outstanding job with this book. They obviously have a lot of experience in their field. I live in the tropics (high elevation) so obviously many of the species grown here are not mentioned. This was something I expected but even with that limitation the book gives me a lot of good ideas and at high elevations we can grow some of the temperate species. Highly recommended.
Very well written and easy to understand. Another valuable tool that I initially bought to help me with my college landscape design classes. I wanted more information than the materials provided in classes. I enjoy propagating plants and,wanted to learn other methods for successful of propagation. I recommend this book for its ease of use and great information. Happy planting.

A very technical book with loads of useful information. If you're into plants you'll get into this book. My GF borrowed it and won't give it back, she's loving the deep detail this book provides, it's not a light reading.Happy planting to all!
