Published in 1752, this book was carefully studied by our founders in crafting the Constitution. Montesquieu describes the types of laws that existed in various forms of governments and the freedoms enjoyed by each. He then examines the underlying "spirit" of the populous that makes each of these governments work. Finally. he discusses the conditions that must prevail to sustain each of these "spirits."Unlike his contemporary Rousseau, an ivory tower theorist, Montesquieu traveled extensively and lived in the various countries with their different forms of government. His conclusions are based, therefore, on empirically gathered data. His book is the most frequently cited work by the Founders and by the authors of the Federalist papers.He cites the republican form of government as the most free, but which must be sustained by the spirit emanating from an educated populous. Other forms of government can be sustained by natural, base instincts or spirits existing within the populous such as fear or greed which require no education.

Montesquieu's fascinating portrait of the radically different social, cultural, political and religious viewpoints and perspectives between Muslim travellers from the Eastern, Islamic influenced cultures of the old Persian Empire versus the very different values espoused by the young, emerging European nation-states of Western Europe rooted in the divergence of Roman Catholicism, Protestantism and the Humanist movement of the European Enlightenment. Very interesting comparison and contrast between socio-political, economic and political contrasts between these two starkly different cultures as narrated by a variety of characters and set in the early 18th century.

I purchased this very important book as an MP3 audiobook and I can honestly say that on such an important book as this the choice of Wanda McCaddon to narrate this book was a very big mistake. I am not alone in my views when I say that this woman has been the most difficult narrator I have ever had to listen to. Her voice is whining, irritating and penetrating and I was astonished to read that she has narrated well over six hundred titles for major book audio publishers.I so wish to continue listening to this MP3 audiobook, but the narrator is making it extremely difficult for me to achieve this, more than five minutes at a time make this listening project very painful.Tragically this set contains two MP3's which means one has to listen to this terrible narrator for at least 22 and half hours. I contacted Blackstone audio with regards to this issue, advising them to listen and at least provide their opinion, but I have had no response. Guess they do not care. It would have been much better read by a man, or anybody other than Wanda.Very disappointing. Wanda obviously can pronounce the most difficult of names easily but her narration sends one into insanity.

The Spirit of Laws is a difficult but fascinating book that delineates different types of societies and the cultures they create clearly and logically. Written by a French nobleman in the 1740's, it inspired both English reformers such as John Locke as well as rulers such as Catherine the Great of Russia. I read it because it was spoken of so highly by the founders of the American republic - many of Montesquieu's ideas shaped our Constitution.The Spirit of Laws is directly relevant today, and eerily prescient in describing how politics shapes society - and vice versa. This is not light reading, but for those with interest, it's a refreshing and vivid conversation with an author across almost two and a half centuries.

Montesquieu was one of the great philosophers who impacted the writings of the US Constitution and bill of rights for separation of powers; without separation of powers there would by tyranny. Really love this book...great for research and better understanding of Montesquieu.

great book but disliked the format, too small therefore thick. Opted to give it away and have ordered the Cambridge edition.

I hadn't realized that this was a fascimile of the original (not sure if that was posted or not).Regardless, this is a beautiful book and the old English print is a something that takes some time to get used to, but well worth it in the end. Seems more original and "pure" without some academic bloviating with his introduction.

Montesquieu give a decent view of the law that many of the founding fathers would have been familiar with. Therefore, I find it to be good reference material.

About the Author

Trena L. Wilkerson, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor with a focus in mathematics education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. She currently works with both preservice and inservice mathematics teachers across grades PK-12. She was a secondary school mathematics teacher for 18 years and has worked in higher education for the past 17 years.She received her undergraduate degree from Mississippi College in 1976 with a major in mathematics. Masters work was completed in 1980 at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, Louisiana with an emphasis in mathematics education. In 1992 she received her Ph.D. from the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Mississippi in Curriculum & Instruction with a focus in mathematics.Her professional interests include mathematics education, teacher education, teacher efficacy, teaching and learning of mathematics, professional development, and assessment. OMG this book helped me pass the test on the second try.I am a 7th grade math teacher, who wanted to add to her resume and decided to take the 4-8 Math TEXES exam. I thought how hard can it be? I teach math everyday and I have gone to school for the elementary portion. I decided to take the test in the summer. I stupidily thought that I could just take the exam with little to no prep and pass. (Oh yeah, I also planned this a week after my honeymoon). Well I was rocked when I took the test and found out how much material was over Algebra, Calculus and statistics. These were not concepts I had to teach but I had to know the fundementals to teach my grade level. I never took calculus in high school so it was like I was seeing a different language. Well needless to say when I got the results I wasn't suprised. I missed passing by 8 questions. I was crushed, I considered leaving the profession. Just kidding, I signed up for another exam in December, 6 months should be enough time to get me ready for round 2.So I looked online and found this book, it had great reviews and seemed to help several others that were in a similar boat to me. I read a little bit at a time, and took the week before to really cram and re-learn as much as I could on the subjects I was rusty in. I went into the testing center confident that I would kick this tests butt. I was so happy when I actually knew what some of the upper-grade level information was.Well I passed the test by over 10 questions. I knew I would have not been able to do as well if I had no prepared for the exam. This book and CD really helped me fill the gaps that I had.This book is a great resource and will defiantly help you increase your score or pass the exam if you are a repeat tester like me.

This is an excellent study guide for the Texas Middle SchoolMath Exam. The guide summarizes each of the competencies with the needed formulas in a quick an concise manner. It provides a perfect refresher. The sample tests are actually more comprehensive than the TExES exam. I was very pleased. Oh, I passed the state exam first time with a weighted score of 92%. The guide was instrumental in my success as I had been out of university for over 20 years. Teaching is a second career for me.

I passed the test, but then again I've taught math for ten years. This more helped me get my mind right for TExES goodies on being a standardized Texas test taker.

So far so good. I like how I can take the test and know what areas I need to focus on. Will update when I test, wish me luck.

I did so so on the test. I studied/crammed for 3 months prior to the text, but there was topics that were on the test and other practice tests that this book didn't cover or mention. Other than that, it was very helpful and got me on track to pass.

My wife used this to prepare for her certification test. She thought it was useful for that purpose.

I, along with several of my co-workers, found several errors in this book. The book helped me remember many formulas that I had forgotten and other basic information. At times, however, the explanations were incomplete, confusing, or just plain wrong. On the tests, I found errors as well. Several of the answers were wrong on the answer key. So, if you need a basic review, I'd say it's okay for that, but don't let this be your only study tool.

This is at least second time that I've read The Color of Magic. I am a die-hard Terry Pratchett and I absolutely love the Discworld. While I find this first book in the series somewhat less developed than the later books, it's still a great read. I can really see how far PTerry developed both the world and the characters when I compare this book with the later ones. I understand that most people don't actually start with this first book, but it really is a great jumping in point because the stories and the characters only get better with each successive novel. I highly recommend this book and the entire series to anyone who loves fantasy and humor. You can't beat PTerry's wisdom or wit.

Wow. I don't know how it is I've never read a novel of the Discworld before, but I am tremendously grateful to have rectified this oversight.A failed wizard. A tourist from an unknown place. Semi-sentient luggage. A somewhat easily thwarted Death. These are the characters we follow across a world that ranges from sort of traditional fantasy to science fantasy. In the course of this tale, they will encounter great heroes, sometimes misunderstood villains, locales that are bigger on the inside than the outside and strange gods that seem to have only moderately more understanding of things than our protagonists.His comedic presentation is undeniable. The scope of his creativity is as impressive as it is daunting and his perspective is unique and utterly refreshing. Dragons as creatures of pure creation, powered by imagination and an active mind? Death (as a conscious, if somewhat imperfect entity) that becomes petty when unable to collect its due, so instead it collects the life of a nearby cat (leaving it with the magic eight instead of the normal nine lives)? The fact that, on occasion, falling from great heights permits trans-dimensional travel? Genius.Pratchett's prose is eminently accessible, which makes this book not only a breeze to read but rather difficult to put down. He may not have the sheer command of language that Vance and Leiber did, but he is every bit their equal in terms of sheer imaginative prowess, wit and tale-telling. Truly, one of the titans of fantasy and an incredible storyteller.TLDR: A must read for any fan of humorous, ingenious and surreal fantasy. On to the quotes:"Precisely why all the above should be so is not clear, but goes some way to explain why, on the disc, the Gods are not so much worshipped as blamed.""He's got a box with a demon in it that draws pictures," said Rincewind shortly. "Do what the madman says and he will give you gold.""No, what he didn't like abut heroes was that they were usually suicidally gloomy when sober and homicidally insane when drunk. There were too many of them, too.""The Disc gods themselves, despite the splendor of the world below them, are seldom satisfied. It is embarrassing to know that one is a god of a world that only exists because every improbability curve must have its far end; especially when one can peer into other dimensions at worlds whose Creators had more mechanical aptitude than imagination. No wonder, then, that the Disc gods spend more time in bickering than in omnicognizance."

This is the first book in the Discworld series, but my 6th Discworld book that Iâ€™ve read. I started with the Tiffany Aching series (which was a great introduction to Discworld!), and thought Iâ€™d go back and start at the beginning.I really loved the Tiffany Aching series, but struggled to get immersed in this book. I found I wasnâ€™t nearly attached to any of the characters in this book compared to Wee Free Men where I was immediately invested in Tiffany, her brother, and all the Nac Mac Feegles. The one â€œcharacterâ€ in Color of Magic that I somewhat cared about was Twoflowerâ€™s Luggage. I think what made this challenging to get in to the book was the main storyline was interrupted with snippits of â€œgodsâ€ controlling movement or position of the characters, and I still donâ€™t know what that was about.I loved all the descriptions of Great Aâ€™Tuin, the giant turtle on which the four elephants that hold up Discworld are standing on. Thereâ€™s a lot of great stuff in this book, I just found a lot of plot not very interesting.I am going to keep reading Discworld, because I believe there are more Discworld books out there that I will really love. I am so glad I didnâ€™t start with this one, because thereâ€™s no way I would have continued the series based on this book. I love Pratchettâ€™s later writing style and have high hopes for other Discworld books, especially the Witches series.

I waited far, far too long to start reading this series, but now that I've started, I'm never going to be able to stop. Pratchett earns his title of one of the best fantasy writers in existence, combining large scale, intricate world building with hilarious prose.The story starts off with telling us what's so special about Discworld. Disworld is actually a flat plan, a 'disc', if you will, resting on the back of four giant elephants, which are themselves standing on the shell of an even more giant turtle crawling through space. Things only get more ridiculous from there. Pratchett introduces us to two great characters. The first, Rincewind, is a washed out drop out of the local wizard college, who a knack for both languages and finding his way to trouble. The second, Twoflower, is a foreigner bored with his life as an insurance salesman, who comes to Rincewinds city as tourist looking for adventure, and willing to pay for it handsomely. Together, the two traipse across the Disc on all sorts of wacky adventures.I want to compare Pratchetts writing to Douglas Adams, or even Kurt Vonnegut, but that wouldn't be accurate. Those authors are massively cynical, and while Pratchett can do satire, his humor is much more kind-hearted. You really just need to read the book for yourself to see what I mean.

Just received my new book "Hebrew Word Study" and it was exactly what I expected, VERY good! I have read several of his other writings and this too is a gem. It is very easy to understand and follow. Written in a style Chaim has perfected over the years. I truly enjoy this book and his daily devotional reading. It has inspired me to dig deeper into the Word of GOD and see HIS heart in all I do.

Where to begin. I have so much I want to say and not sure if I can but into words my appreciation for this book and its author. But first I thank Yahweh Elohim for giving Chaim a teachable heart and the willingness to share his insights with the rest of the flock. Anyone who reads this book will be abundantly blessed! I have been trying to find material to help me learn Hebrew. Many years I have been in Bible study alone with only traditional helps. Then, a couple of years ago, as if the Lord pointed me to Zephaniah 3:9, again, and again. The truth is, to love God back, is to want to learn His pure language. It can not be fully translated into English. This study has giving me an understanding of our Creator God that I had never had before. Thank You Chaim Bentorah!

Having read a few of Chaim's other books I knew in advance what to expect and I wasn't disappointed. The book is at once sublime and down to earth.The studies are written in more of a devotional style than academic, however, it is impossible not to come away without added knowledge of The Hebrew language that in any other format may be off putting.The book is organized in a way that allows the reader to choose a subject, or to read it through. Regardless of your own reasons for reading this book you will come away with having made a new friend in the author and a fresh new way to experience the intimacy God desires to have with you.

Chaim is clear and very understandable. He brings out the different ways that the Hebrew text might be translated, showing different shades of meaning as he reflects on different verses. I would give this book a wholehearted 5 stars except for one problem. The Kindle edition of this book is not rendering the Hebrew script correctly. Buyer should be aware that all of the Hebrew words are being rendered with their letters reversed! Hebrew is a right to left script, but the Kindle seems to not understand this and the result is that all the Hebrew words are spelled backwards. I would love to see an update to this book that corrects the problem.

Great read. A part of history unknown to most, and must be known by all. Not only en engrossing story but told not like a history but a novel. Exciting, informative, well-written and like Dan Rather says a story that must be told.

I could hardly put this book down. It's a story I knew nothing about -- intrepid women, mostly unknown to each other , who for one reason or other were determined to cover the Second World War and the run up to it, both on the European and Asian fronts. They reported mostly in spite of the obstacles the American press put in their way, and in at least two instances scooped all other reporters. Nancy Sorel has managed to weave together the stories of this varied group of women in a way that holds one's interest throughout. I bought copies for several friends after reading it.

Never thought of this aspect of WW11. Most interesting.

This is an excellent introduction to women correspondents who covered World War II.Sorel has done her homework. She's looked through memoirs, news despatches, and magazine articles to gather together the stories of the women who covered the war. And she doesn't only talk about the major players, women like Martha Gellhorn, Mary Walsh, Margaret Bourke-White, Lee Miller, and Dorothy Thompson. She alse tells us about the women correspondents who have you haven't heard of but who were there as our soldiers fought across Europe and the Pacific.What I especially liked was that Sorel didn't hesitate to sprinkle her narrative with abundant passages from the writing of these women. Almost every page has some really terrific passage describing what they saw. This is a very interesting book about the women reporters who were imbedded with the American troops during World War II. They were mostly assigned to hospital units and WAC units - but some managed to "escape" and join the men on the front lines. Margaret Bourke-White, for example, flew with B-17 crews to take photographs of bombing missions. Lee Carson and Iris Carpenter were in the front lines during the Battle of the Bulge. Sigrid Schultz, Helen Kirkpatrick, and Marguerite Higgins went into Buchenwald (the first concentration camp liberated by the Americans) the first day of the liberation. Iris Carpenter was with the Seventh Corps of the First Army when Lager Dora, a slave labor camp outside Nordhausen, was liberated. War correspondents Lee Carson, Don Whitehead, Margaret Bourke-White, and Bill Walton were the first to discover the work camp Erla near Leipzig, where the Nazis attempted to destroy the evidence by burning the survivors in the barracks. Marguerite Higgins was with Forty-second and Forty-fifth divisions of the U. S. Seventh Army when Dachau was liberated and was the American that accepted the surrender of the SS general in charge of Dachau, for which she was awarded an army campaign ribbon. One of these women continued to cover the United States Marine Corps until November 1965, when she was killed by shrapnel from a land mine near Da Nang in Vietnam - thereby winning the distinction of being the first female correspondent killed in action. The book also explores the role of the WACs, the WAVEs, and the lady Marines as "behind the lines" soldiers. They were not as far behind the lines as we have been asked to believe! It is a well-written book.

THE WOMEN WHO WROTE THE WAR, by Nancy Sorel, is the story of the female war correspondents who, working for various U.S. newspapers and wire services, shoved their way to the battlefronts of World War II, making that conflict, especially in its latter stages, the first to be equally reported by both sexes.By her own admission, the author cut fully half of the female reporter roster from the book so as not to render it unwieldy. Even then, the half remaining is an Honor Roll of the profession: Helen Kirkpatrick, Margaret Bourke-White, Lee Carson, Ruth Cowan, Lee Miller, Martha Gellhorn, Catherine Coyne, Virginia Irwin, Iris Carpenter, Annalee Jacoby, Mary Welsh, Dickey Chapelle, Sonia Tomara, Shelley Mydans, Pat Lochridge, and a host of others too numerous to mention here.Beginning roughly with the Spanish Civil War, and finishing with the months immediately after WWII, the book's chapters are a series of snapshots in which Sorel's subjects appear or not, depending on their presence in the theater of conflict being described - and they all seem to move around a lot. So, in sequential order, one reads of reporting Hitler's annexation of Czechoslovakia, the attack on Poland, the fall of France, the Blitz, the Nazi assault on the Soviet Union, the war in China, the Japanese capture of the Philippines, the North African and Italian campaigns, D-Day, the liberation of Paris, the Battle of the Bulge, the Pacific islands war, the advance into Germany, the American-Russian link-up, the liberated concentration camps, V-E Day, and, finally, the surrender of Japan.I can't give WOMEN WHO WROTE THE WAR a 5-star rating because the number of players was too excessive. It would've been better had Sorel focused on, say, just 3 or 4 correspondents in each theater (Europe and the Pacific) as representative of the whole. As it was, so many names kept popping in and out of the narrative that it was hard to "get to know" any one of them, though some are better introduced than others. However, taken as written, this is an admirably comprehensive look at the gutsy ladies that did what they had to do to bring the stories back home to readers in America. For example, Virginia Irwin obtained one of the biggest scoops of the war by deliberately defying a specific SHAEF (Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Forces) restriction on correspondents' movements in a certain area. You go, girl!

These are great books for children learning to read and for children who don't like to read "long: books. Also these books have a ton of information in them that keep my children interested on reading to the next page. I find that my children will read these books over and over again.

Ms. Roberts has written a great leveled reader to peak the interest of young racing fans. The book focuses on some of the sport's most memorable drivers with each chapter being devoted to a different one. Each chapter ends with a stats page that highlights that's drivers important career achievements. Colorful pictures and interesting captions adorn almost every page. Nascar's Greatest Drivers is perfect for readers who are ready to read a simple chapter book. Check with your child's librarian or teacher to see if they have ordered the Accelerated Reader test for this selection as well.I look forward to sharing more titles from this series with my students!

My second grader is a huge NASCAR fan and loves reading about the older guys like Richard Petty and Dale Sr. He loves this book.

As a DIYer I used this book as a guide when building a shed with structural steel studs. I learnt a lot from this book,At times the author does come across as a metal framing salesman, pitching the virtues of steel again and again.

A very technical book. More for a engineering or a architect background than a tradesman. It does have a lot of detail diagrams which are helpful for tradesmen that are new to framing with metal studs. I did not like this book as much as Steel Frame House Construction, another book I purchased at the same time.

I am not a legal eagle---Not into mystery novels or NCIS. But this book had me hooked at the very beginning with the account of arrests of women for minor traffic offenses (e.g. unpaid parking tickets) and taken to jail where they were stripped searched---including body cavity searches. No such treatment for men. At worst, they got a pat down. I was astonished to learn that the Right to Privacy was NOT part of our constitution.I found the book entirely thought-provoking, it kept my interest and generated some animated conversation with houseguests.

I enjoyed this book, even though it is heavy on legal court cases. Don't let that fool you, though, it's not a legal reference. This book covers significant cases in privacy using a very interesting approach. There a interviews and behind-the-scenes stories that explain what happened, how the plaintiff felt, and what the outcome was.If you liked this book you will love "The Digital Umbrella." It is a great compliment to this book.

To describe the reading experience of this book as compelling, gripping, spellbinding, or captivating might sound weird, but that was I have felt while reading this book. I am certain to say that this book is much more interesting and attention-grabbing than many thrillers or crime novels.The authors have done a marvelous job in integrating seamlessly a variety of court cases with their implications and impacts on privacy issues. They have told and re-told the wealth of different stories in a way that any reader would be so into them instantly. Their way of story-telling are not only very human and sympathetic - to both victims and the accused - but also very well-balanced in explaining why things are panning out that way.Their analyses and comments on a range of privacy issues also appear very thoughtful, well-rounded, superbly balanced, and therefore insightful that could endure a test of significant periods of time.Lots of things - legislation, regulations, torts, policies, procedures, perceptions, awareness, etc. - have been changed since this book was published more than 10 years ago. However, the implications, lessons learned, and commonalities from the cases dealt with in this book seem still very relevant and meaningful.
