I would encourage every horse owner and lover to read this gem of a book. Maureen Tierney is an experienced horse woman, trainer and natural barefoot trimmer of 11 years. She has worked on both coasts and even Alaska. She and her herd of 10 now call Kentucky home. She has trimmed literally thousands of feet and saved many horses who were to be put down due to founder, navicular, and other hoof issues. Thanks to her curiosity and desire to do the best for horses, Maureen has created a trimming method that results in sound and healthy hooves, quickly. After reading The Hoof Guided Method, you will understand more than most vets and farriers and probably quite a few trimmers. Isn't that a sad comment? But it's the truth. If you have tried barefoot and your horse "failed" try again, with her method and you will succeed. If you are transitioning out of shoes now but your horse isn't sound, read the book and order a rasp. If you have any concerns about how your horse's hooves are being managed, give her a call or e-mail. Her e-mail contains this telling phrase, For The Horse. That is Maureen in a nutshell.Maureen encourages us to study our horse's feet, take photos and think about the changes we see. She teaches us how to understand what the foot is telling us to trim, and equally important what it is telling us to leave alone. She identifies the anatomical parts we see and the parts we don't. Then in a clear manner, explains how the anatomy functions in a healthy foot.People like to DO. This frequently results in the excessive trimming and even wounding of the horse. Trimming should never, ever result in a sorer horse. Please don't accept that. Maureen won't teach you how to trim pretty feet, but over time, you sure will grow four of them! And quickly too. I have been shocked at how quickly my horse's feet have responded to this method. Maureen is available to comment on your horse's hooves and trimming for a minimal fee of $10. This service has been priceless for me."To put it very simply - barefoot trimming is about simulating and stimulating. First, we are simulating the wear horses' feet would get if they were free to get all the exercise they needed to keep their feet self-trimmed. Secondly, we are trimming the foot to stimulate it to grow healthy and in the proper form for each individual foot." We are there to help when our horses don't have the terrain or adequate movement to self-trim. HELP, being the critical word.Every chapter is well documented with photos, illustrations and radiographs. She has included many internet sites where you can find more detailed information, including her own site [...]. She includes work by the top researchers in the field --- Dr. Robert Bowker, Pete Ramey, Jaime Jackson, KC LaPierre --- to further clarify commentary.By the end, you will understand why shoes are always a bad deal for all horses. And yes, all horses (even old ones) can go barefoot; some may need the transitional support of boots. (This assumes your horse still has a good portion of the coffin bone.) Hoof health requires barefeet and Maureen explains why. Your horse's health requires barefeet. When the hoof functions correctly, horses are simply healthier: less or no rain rot, less or no hives, bloom of the coat, improved gaits and so forth.I look forward to my horse's improved-to-the-max hooves. Yes, I am eating some humble pie. I happily stand corrected on some of my trimming techniques. I also look forward to the day when horse owners look at shoes --- metal and plastic --- as museum pieces.Thank you Maureen Tierney for getting us one step close to that dream! And from all the horses who will be helped from your book, neighhhhhhhh!
I think the theory is great and want to follow her method, but with no other hoof trimming experience I found it very difficult to follow. My friends and I have read the book several times and have watched the video, but she just doesn't give enough info about how to trim for someone who is new to this. Both the video and photos in the book are low quality and difficult to read. She really need to do several case studies where she takes the before pics (good quality), marks up the pics to demonstrate what she will do, and then goes step by step through each one. I have considered emailing her, but even when I read through the q&a on her website I still feel less than confident that I understand what she is saying. I have spoken with a couple of people who use her method, but they both have a slightly different understanding of some of the details; I think it would be best for her to hire someone else to write a precise companion book describing the method only. I truly appreciate all the effort and time she has put into this and believe that she is a phenomenal trimmer and knows her stuff, but may not be the greatest at teaching it to a newbie. Or maybe I'm just too clueless.
This book was short and sweet. A quick read that gets right down to the nuts and bolts. If you are looking for a major anatomy lesson or a long treatment on why and how horses should live naturally, you can find that elsewhere. Tierney is focused mainly on her specific trim and how she has had good results in de-contracting heels and building a broad healthy frog through her method. There is definitely much of value to take away from her experience. i will be trying her method in my own practice. Personally, I would have appreciated more photos, more photo side by side comparisons, more case studies or anecdotal tales about cases. I can spend hours going through such photos. I know as trimmers doing a day-to-day job we often forget about or get lazy about photo-chronicaling our work and progress. I am sure that Tierney wishes she had taken more progressive photos of her clients' horses. In a book like this that will help make the case better than words.I am glad I bought the book and I will read it again and again.
The book is clear and makes good sense. I normally trim my own horses but had to use a farrier because I was considering adopting a horse from a rescue and needed the reference. However pretty the trim was, it actually made my new mare lame. Too short and off came the heel flush to the soul of the foot. It took 10 weeks to allow the bars to grow out and I trimmed only the toe to correct the aggressive trim, obviously the style for shoes. This book explains how to trim off what nature didn't trim during it's course of exercise. I learned much about the anatomy of the hoof and how blood flows throughout the hoof and why knowledge of the living hoof is necessary to trim and allow the hoof to repair itself, "less is more".Flat hooves like flat feet cause damage not only to the hoof but can bring on arthritis and injure your horse. I am happy to have read this book, it was worth it.
