I bought the book for my husband, he thought it was great...even better when he found the tickets to attend the race I had hidden in the book.

On February 22, 1959, more than 100,000 NASCAR fans would anxiously peer out over the Daytona tri-oval awaiting the start of the first Daytona 500 race. Mario Andretti later quipped, "You can't call your career complete unless you put a Daytona win under your belt." Perhaps for many fans, they can't say they've really experienced racing until they've actually made a pilgrimage to Daytona to sit in the stands and watch this "500-mile explosion" in person. The roar and excitement doesn't only come from the stock car engines, it comes from an excited, appreciative audience. The Daytona 500 is the "Super Bowl of the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) circuit," a race that owes its origin to racers on the sands of the Daytona and Ormond beaches. It all began with a challenge when Ransom Olds and Alex Winter decided to pit their cars against each other on the beach at Ormond, Florida. The "Pirate" and the "Bullet" may not have come close to hitting the high speeds of cars that would come later, but they were legendary in that they set the stage for generations of racers to come. You'll be able to follow many trailblazers as they raced their cars on the beaches until you meet up with "Big Bill" France, a visionary who would attempt to give some structure to the sport. France "wanted to start an organization to govern stock car racing." By the end of 1947 his dream came true when the organization was formed and rules were agreed upon by the consensus of "35 drivers, mechanics, and businesspeople at the Streamline Hotel in Daytona Beach." NASCAR would soon be up and running. It will almost feel like you're right in the stands watching as you read some interesting vignettes of the sport and hear the crowds go wild as exciting historical stories are recapped. You'll read about the first Daytona 500 wild `n crazy first race, DeWayne "Tiny" Lund's heroism and Cinderella-like chance at winning a race, how Mario Andretti "thrilled the fans and unnerved the other drivers" with his antics on the track, Richard Petty and David Pearson's extreme rivalry, and how "trading paint" ended up in a real time fight between the Allison brothers and Cale Yarborough. After the "wild 1979 finish," which you'll read about in this book, "NASCAR became a truly national sport," one that can now boast millions of fans of all ages and walks of life. As the stakes became higher the drivers began to push their cars to incredible speeds, but soon NASCAR realized the unsafe conditions and implemented restrictor plates that would reduce "horsepower--and speed." In the more recent history of the sport the stories seemed to become more electrifying. You'll read about the Allison family duel in the 1988 Daytona 500, how Wessa Miller rubbed a lucky penny so Dale Earnhardt would win, Michael Waltrip's triumphant win that turned into a tragedy, and how one jobless racer came from behind to win. If all the amazing stories aren't enough you're going to learn about the evolution of the stock car, you'll get to check out the specs of the stock car, and finally get to read about the Thrill and Thunder of the Great American Race! The young reader will get a real taste of the "Thrill and Thunder" of the Daytona 500 in the pages of this book. I've read several books about individual racers and the NASCAR circuit, but this is one of the most interesting by far. The marvelous assortment of stories in this book was what interested me the most as I read about the most obscure figures right along with the more commonly known racers in the sport. I found the overview early history of stock car racing jumpstarted this book very nicely and kept my interest until the last pages. The funky real life characters of Henry Seagrave (Mad Major) and Sir Malcolm Campbell were quite interesting to say the least. The book was very well written and researched and many interviews were conducted in person. There are numerous informative sidebars and ~HOT~ photographs. In the back of the book is an index, a glossary (including slang), an interview with John Andretti, an explanation of the meaning of NASCAR flags, source notes, and additional recommended book and website resources to explore. This is a Junior Library Guild Selection. This book courtesy of the publisher.

Okay, I have to admit here...I am not a huge NASCAR fan! In fact, before my 8 year old became completely obsessed with everything NASCAR, I had absolutely no interest in it. However, my son means the world to me so when he started becoming interested in it and wanted my husband and I to watch with him, I did and surprisingly, I enjoyed it!I saw this book on NetGalley and immediately requested it so my son and I could read it together. My son loved the pictures of all the car wrecks! Besides that though, we really enjoyed reading about the history behind the Daytona 500. Did you know that the first Daytona race was actually held on the beach? I certainly didn't! My son loved the "Bullet" car that was one of the first to race in the Daytona (this was, of course, before NASCAR was an event). What I liked most about this book was that it was easy for my 8 year old to listen too or just look at the pictures. He was not bored at all by the book and was thrilled to know all the facts behind the race. In fact, for days after we read the book he told everyone the history behind the Daytona and the "Allison Family Duel" amongst other facts! I liked that it had a glossary in the back so I could understand the different slang that was used (although my son already knew it all) and the interview with John Andretti. The author obviously spent a lot of time researching and included a lot of the fun facts in sidebars. The pictures were amazing and I thought this book was much better than some of the previous ones my son had brought home from the library. My son is constantly asking me to look at the book so he can reread it. I think I am going to have to buy him his own copy!

The Tecate Journals: Seventy Days on the Rio Grandeby Keith BowdenThe Rio Grande is simultaneously one of the most watched and least understood rivers in the world. Some stretches of the Rio pass for endless miles through remote wilderness, boxed in by canyons hundreds of feet high and inhabited by only the hardiest animals and humans. Other stretches go straight through the center of massive urban areas, all but ignored by the thousands of city folks above. It is a national border, a water source, a dangerous rapid with house-sized boulders, a nature refuge, a garbage dump, and a playground, depending on where you are on its 1885-mile course. That's why journalist Keith Bowden decided to become the first person to travel the entire length of the Rio as it forms the border between America and Mexico. This is his fascinating account of the journey by bike, canoe, and raft along one of North America's most overlooked resources. From illegal immigrants and drug runners trying to make it into America to the border patrol working to stop them; from human coyotes -- smugglers who help people navigate their way into the United States-to encounters with real coyotes, mountain lions, and other flora and fauna, Bowden reveals a side of America that few of us ever see. The border between the U.S. and Mexico is, in many ways, a country unto itself, where inhabitants share more in common with fellow riverside dwellers than they do with the rest of their countrymen. With this isolated and colorful micro-world as his backdrop, Bowden not only explores his surroundings, but also tests his inner mettle along some of the most dangerous and remote riparian wilderness in North America.Product Code: 0776Pages: 320ISBN: 978-1-59485-077-6Publisher: Mountaineers BooksPublication date: 8/24/2007

The author, Keith Bowden, lived and worked in Laredo as a uni prof, then took a sabbatical to boat the Texas length of the Rio Grande in 2006, and turned the experience into a book. He went into the expedition with a catalog of border experiences and notions, but still didn't know what to expect. That is an intriguing premise.Having met Keith at a speaking engagement, I was enthralled by his in-person storytelling, and figured I should put this on my Big Bend/Rio Grande reading list. It sat on my shelf forever because I didn't want to read yet another "white man's adventure in a white man's world" - a worn out narrative I don't relate to but is as ubiquitous as Huck Finn. When I finally picked it up I was hooked through the end. It was a quick day and half read.It offered details to questions I've long had about why the Rio Grande is not better utilized as a recreational area. It is also entertaining for canoeists, as there is frequent use of boating terminology during Keith's harrowing often last-minute maneuvers around rapids and dams. Naturalists will appreciate the mention of wildlife encounters. And perhaps trappers would be interested in the density of the beaver population he encountered. There is also plenty for Border Patrol geeks. There is a little bit of action and a lot of adventure and a good measure of self-reflection. There were a few laugh-out-loud moments - especially when the author had the good humor to poke fun at himself. It is well written, has a consistent style and studied craft, and by the end, readers might even think they know the author pretty well, although I kinda doubt it.Glad I gave this book a chance. Yes, it does have a touch of the "Huck Finn," but Keith's highly opinionated perspective didn't seem to "get in the way" of all the goodies, and is indeed, part of the book's charm. "It is what it is and ain't what it ain't."This would make a great reference for anyone interested in canoeing or understanding border life and politics, as told from a singular point of view.

I bought this book after spending a few days on the Rio on a couple separate trips to Big Bend NP. The lower canyons have been calling my name so I figured this would do until I could get down there and run them myself. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the biking portion and then he seemed to breeze through the canyons portion that are most popular. I was then thinking about how I wasn't really looking forward to the portion of the book after the Langtry pull out. Boy did that change. The ended up being my favorite portion of the book. The interactions with people on both sides and his changing perspective of the Border Patrol and their job were intriguing. I would highly recommend this book to people that enjoy that part of Texas and/or find it fascinating. Also anyone wanting to learn more about the border (now that its a major political topic for people that have no idea about life in that area...) this will give you a unique perspective that isn't so much one side or the other but rather a look at both sides from the middle.

As of writing this review I am on a trip to Texas; I read this book on my flight and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Although I never floated the Rio Grande (and probably never will), I had visited Big Bend National Park, Del Rio, Cuidad Acuna, drove on the El Camino Del Rio when I lived in Texas years ago, and the book brings back some of those memories.More importantly, this is a well written book, you can enjoy it even if you have never seen the Rio Grande or even been to Texas. Keith Bowden is a good writer, although the book narrates his 70-day biking/canoeing/rafting journey, it never drags. It in fact flows like the river, has surprises at every turn. Near the end, you almost regret -- like the author himself -- that the journey had to end. It is also not merely a travelogue; it weaves encounters with the various people (Mexican fishermen, "undocumented workers", border patrol agents, etc.), personal reflections and some historical tidbits of the border and the two nations that it divides. If I had to nitpick one thing, it is this: Keith Bowden is not a naturalist, and the descriptions he gave of the natural environment are general and vague. But to say this is a "flaw" would be too harsh -- he never claimed to be a naturalist and this is not what the book is about. One repeated theme from the book is the abuse that people (Americans and Mexicans alike) gave to this river: it is polluted, trashed and mutilated. Although the book is never meant to be an "environmental study" or of the "nature writing" genre, the scars of this once mighty river are just too plain to see. Also, with the security around the border rapidly deteriorating, I doubt anyone (the author included) would attempt such a journey any time soon, probably ever again. I am glad that he had made this trip and shared it with us. A job well done!P.S.: for those who liked this book, I also recommend Colin Fletcher's "River" and John Graves' "Goodbye to a River".

I took a trip to Seattle, had an extra day and wanted to do a day hike. This is an excellent book for someone unfamiliar with the area to pick a hike out that they'd like to do. It has everything from a few hour hike to a few day hike. One word of warning, if you want to go for a hike in the mountains, try to go in August so the roads and trails will be open!!! The maps and pictures are all in black and white, so they're not the best, but that's what you get if you want an inexpensive book...

This book is fantastic, if you live in Seattle. If you live on the east side of the state however this book is a major dissapointment. Why, you ask? Because the eastern most hike in this book is in the Pasayten wilderness area, effectively ignoring the entire eastern half of the state. I was really hoping for something in Colville or Umatalla National Forest, even something in the eastern portion of Okanogan would have been nice, but no. National Forests, State Parks, Wildlife Refugees, designated wilderness areas, all ignored east of the Cascades. This is the worst guide book for Washington I've ever purchased.

Great book. One of the few that doesn't focus on day hikes and gives us mileage monsters places to go.

I am a big hiking fan and I hate walking back and forth and seeing the same thing twice. I love this book for that reason

I loaned this book to a "friend" of mine. "Friend" because she never returned it. I think that this book is out of print, so if you can find it and you like hiking in Washington State...buy this book and never, never loan it out.

There is a nice range of loop distances in here. I've only done a couple of routes so far, both 3day trips, and both awesome. Just what I was looking for.

As you can probably decipher from the title, Best Loop Hikes is guidebook for the best loop hikes in WA state. Nelson covers all of the state, though there is an emphasis on the Cascade and Olympic mountains (this is where the best hikes are). It's a wonderful premise for a hiking book, but the it's seriously lacking in organization. While the written description of the hikes are excellent to good, that's basically all this book contains, save for a map showing the general locations. The hikes aren't organized by region, difficulty, best season, etc; you have to read through the description each hike to discern this information. This makes it somewhat difficult to use this guidebook for organizing hikes.Despite it's shortcomings, I do recommend this book because there are so many great hikes described; I just hope future editions will offer better organization to make it more reader-friendly.

"Nothing pleases hikers more than finding a great wilderness trail that allows them to wander in circles, never touching the same bit of trail twice. Hiking, after all, is hard work and it's nice when every step takes you into new country, with new scenery. Out-and-back hikes are okay, but a great loop hike? That's the holy grail of the trail world." -- from the introductionThat pretty much sums up this excellent guide to loop hikes in Washington State. The novice hiker, or someone like me who hasn't been on the trails in a while, will benefit from the up-to-date information in the introduction. Topics include: permits and regulations, general trail etiquette, low-impact camping, water, clean-up, bears, cougars, weather, and gear.A partial Washington State map near the front of the book helps the reader to locate the numbered hikes, ranging from as far west as Cape Alava on the Olympic Peninsula to Horseshoe Basin/Windy Peak in the Okanogan National Forest in the north central part of the state. The majority of these hikes are in the Cascade Mountains, from North Cascades National Park to Mount Adams in the south.A two-page guide will help the reader select "hikes by interest," including panoramic views, solitude, old-growth forest, dog-friendly trails, kid-friendly trails, wildflower viewing, waterfalls and rivers, lakes, wildlife viewing and natural splendor. One drawback to this fine volume is that there is no simple way to find an easy dayhike without turning to the page for each individual hike. These loops vary in length from short dayhikes to overnight backpack trips that can take several days. Each hike selection begins with a short summary. The text provides clear directions on how to get to the trailhead, a description of each hike and things you might see along the way. A small topographical trail map is provided for each hike, and the book is scattered with black and white photos of sights one might encounter on the trail. An appendix contains helpful contact information and web addresses to parks, ranger districts and volunteer groups mentioned in the book. This is an excellent addition to the Mountaineers catalog of guidebooks. If you're looking for a loop hike in the Pacific Northwest--whether short or long--take a look at this volume.

I've been coding Java servlets and JSPs since 2000. I've had this book since shortly after it was published and it's a frequent go-to resource. It covers pretty much everything you need to know. It may not always have exhaustive detail, but if there's a topic I've grown hazy on (I work on more than just servlets/JSPs) this book has a succinct, relevant passage to remind me.The only downsides are that this thing is the size of a Manhattan phone book (you have to be of a certain age to grasp what I mean) and it's not available on the Kindle. I'd buy it in a heartbeat if it were.

This book takes you through a well structured learning journey of JSP, Servlets and related technologies such as Netbeans, Tomcat and MySQL for developing complete web apps. The book has provided me with the skill and confidence to start building my own web-app. The book finishes with a completed e-commerce example that builds on the earlier work, and gives the reader a basis for their own future development. The book provides comprehensive details on how to set up the environment for developing and deploying web-apps, with the installation of Netbeans, MySQL, libraries etc covered in the appendices. The set up is generally a difficult part of learning a new computer concept and this book explains this very well. The material, the downloaded code, and exercises are well integrated and provide for a comprehensive learning experience. I was able to successfully complete the vast majority of exercises readily.I have ordered the Murach Java book as I found the JSP and Servlets book very useful.COMPARED TO HEAD FIRST***********************I am a big fan of the Head First series, a series which has taught me everything I know about Java, XHTML, CSS, Design Patterns Ajax, OO Design etc. I love it. But as a novice, I found Head First Servlets and JSP: Passing the Sun Certified Web Component Developer Exam (SCWCD) difficult to get into. Mainly because the HF book is directed towards accreditation, and contains some curved balls to prepare for the exam that distracted me from learning.Instead, I did the Murach book from cover to cover, and skim read the HF book (partially because I am in love with that bossy HF girl!). The HF series is more fun and engaging, but for JSP and Servlets I found the Murach approach worked best for me. While the Murach book is as as well written and presented as can be expected of a more traditional text book, it is not as interactive as the HF series. I therefore found completing the exercises in the Murach book important for engaging with the content.Murach does a better job than HF on the MySQL and IDE side of things. HF probably covers the nuances of the Servlets more comprehensively.I recommend both, depending on what you need.

I used this book for my university course and I admit that it was extremely useful. Nothing is unclear and everything is explained in fine detail. All probable questions that may rise up in a student's mind are actually well anticipated and that makes a big difference in making that learning curve as short as possible. With the knowledge provided, this book will teach you how to make a fully working online e-commerce web application. Although aesthetics may not be its strong point, it is not all that hard complementing the book with a bit of online research to see how CSS (which is not covered) works and how to add a button or two in order to give it more professional looking graphical user interface. The real deal is actually "under the covers" in which servlets, database management, etc are alla layed out in a way that have a logic for what you're trying to achieve (online store). Sadly, when it comes to making an ebay-style web app, this book simply doesn't go that far. Thus I needed to search the web and many occassions to include what I thought was necessary. Maybe that could be the basis for a new Murach's book? In all, great book!

Murach's is the best book on the market today if you want to learn strictly how to program JSPs and Servlets. He covers various aspects of JSP and Servlet develop along with a crash course in HTML. I have gone through 18 chapters of the book thus far and have learned a great deal about Java web development. Every code example I have run just works (given you set them up and use them in a Netbeans and Tomcat environment). If you are interested in learning about how to code JSPs and Servlets this book is for you. This book does not get into a lot of peripheral info (no frameworks, no EJB, and only what you need to know to get Tomcat up and running as well as setting up mySQL). This book does not bog you down with a lot of extra info only what's needed to learn the basics (and then some) of Java web development. I would strongly advise any new JEE Developer or someone looking to brush up to purchase this book. The code examples you download from the site are great and each one can run independent of other chapters. There are a few chapters where you will need to set up mySQL database connection, but that is as complex as it gets (and even with that step the book walks you through the entire process). Looking forward to other JEE books from Murach.
