Our Friend Mona describes the life of the youngest of the 10 women who were executed for their Baha'i Faith after the Iranian Revolution. Azadeh and Mark Perry use first-hand accounts to illustrate her free spirit, her devotion to her family and friends, and her dedication to service. Azadeh, herself, was one of Mona's friends and to hear of their friendship and of Mona's kindly spirit through the eyes of a young girl is incredibly touching. One is brought to tears reading the story of how this young soul stood up to injustice, how she supported and comforted her fellow prisoners and how she bravely faced those who imprisoned and executed her. A beautiful story on the indomitable strength of the human spirit!
I am an avid reader but “Our Friend Mona†was unlike anything I have ever read before. The book is written in such a way that it becomes less historical in perspective and more a series of events occurring as you read the book. The true strength of this story is the remarkable life of this young woman. I obviously have never met Mona but I feel as if I know her. Her continued dedication to her faith and beliefs in the face of such horrible adversity is inspirational. This book is about more than the life of young martyr. It is about the hope and strength Mona gave those around her. Mona’s heroic story if one all of us should take the time to read.
I bought this book recently and I am simply at a loss for words to expressed how deeply the book moved me. There was so much beauty and power that is conveyed in this book about the precious life of that angelic soul, and her equally angelic father and family, much of which we would never know had it not been so beautifully portrayed here. Furthermore, the book covers many a precious detail about the many other angelic women and men of that same period.
This story of a real life young martyr. Her qualities of kindness, spirituality and love towards all are really needed in the world today.
Some Baha'is have given their lives rather than submit to relentless pressure to recant their faith. In Iran, the Islamic Republic went so far as to hang ten women in 1983, one of whom was 17-year-old Mona Mahmudnizhad. The beauty of this book is that it makes real the journey of this young woman. Rather than think in the abstract of Mona as teen martyr, we enter her life and see just how courageous she was on a daily basis because her love was so profound - for God, for Bahá'u'lláh, for her family, and for all humanity. Most enlightening was her love and forgiveness for her captors, torturers, and executioners.Mona's mother's words to the prison guards in the morgue after her daughter was hanged, ring out: "If you only knew for what reason these bodies, these children, have fallen here on this dust, you would sweep up that dust beneath their bodies and make it a remedy for your eyes."Thousands attended the funeral of Mona and her sisters-in-faith. Sadly, even in death, Baha'is are abused. The graves of these heroines have been destroyed as the Baha'i cemetery in Shiraz has been leveled by Islamc government authorities to make way for a sports complex. But as the author says in regard to other Baha'is killed by the Iranian regime and mistreated in death: "...that patch of unmarked earth would be remembered as holy ground in the long memories of angels."Mona was derisively called "the little Baha'i teacher" by prison guards and judicial clerics. They thought that killing her would be a good idea to stop the spread of the Baha'i Faith. They were, of course, profoundly wrong, exposing only their own bottomless cruelty and the shallowness to their claim to represent Islam. I am often reminded of snippets from popular culture that encapsulate profound truths. Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars tells Darth Vader something that applies to so many who offer themselves up for our sake: "If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine."Mona Mahmudnizhad's is extremely powerful and her example shines forever as a testament to the power of the spiritual truth revealed by Bahá'u'lláh to stand courageously against the impotent forces of tyranny and oppression.
I bought this book a couple of months ago and didn't have the time to read it until recently. Once I finally picked it up, I couldn't put it down! It reads like a work of fiction, but to know that it is a true story makes it so much more inspiring. I found myself wanting to tell everyone about what I was reading, and was brought to tears several times. As someone who studies history and as a Baha'i, I was drawn into Mona's life and I feel a strong connection to her that I won't forget. Thank you to the authors for this wonderful experience!
